Lamentations 3:1

I Am the man] The Prophet speaketh all this in the person of his people: or, of the citie of Jerusalem and State of Judah.

hath seen affliction] Sustained, endured. Jeremiah 5:12. & Jeremiah 14:13. & Jeremiah 42:14. Psalms 16:10. & Psalms 49:9. & Psalms 89:48.

by the rod of his wrath] Isaiah 10:5.

Lamentations 3:2

brought me into darknesse] Affliction, misery. Psalms 112:4. Isaiah 8. 22. Chap. 2. 1.

not into light] Joy, prosperitie. Esther 8:16. Psalms 97:11.

Lamentations 3:3

against me is he turned] He is turned to be against me, who had wont to be for me. Exodus 14:25. Psalms 46:7. Chap. 2. 3. Or, he turneth again upon me, to fetch and inflict new strokes. Isaiah 1:25.

Lamentations 3:4

My flesh and my skin hath he made old,] Or, worn out; consumed. Job 21 13. Psalms 32:3.

he hath broken my bones] Isaiah 38:13. Jeremiah 50:17.

Lamentations 3:5

He hath builded against me] Encamped, and raised fortifications against me. Job 19:12.

with gall and travell] Or, venome and vexation. See Jeremiah 8:14. vers. 19.

Lamentations 3:6

set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old] Shut me up in prisons and dungeons vers. 53. 55. wherein I lye as buried; like a corps in the grave. Psal. 88. 5, 6. Ezek. 37. 11, 12.

Lamentations 3:7

hedged me about] Job 3 23. & 19. 8. Hosea 2:6.

made my chain heavy] Psalms 66:11. Heb. brasse. Jeremiah 39:7.

Lamentations 3:8

he shutteth out my prayer] Alluding to the manner of those that shut the doore against suiters, that they may not have accesse, when they will not be troubled with them. See vers. 44.

Lamentations 3:9

hath enclosed my wayes with hewen stone] He keepeth me in hold as a prisoner; blocking up against me all wayes and means of escape. Chap. 1. 3. Psalms 88:8. Hosea 2:6.

hath made my paths crooked] Or, perverted my paths. Jeremiah 3:21. He hath turned all my projects and designes a contrary way: because I took courses contrary to his wayes. Leviticus 26:27-28. Psalms 18:26. vers. 11.

Lamentations 3:10

as a bear lying in wait] Job 10:16. Isaiah 38:13. Hosea 5:14. & 13. 7, 8.

as a lion in secret places] Psalms 17:12.

Lamentations 3:11

turned aside my wayes] vers. 9.

pulled me in pieces] Torn me in pieces. Job 16:9. Hosea 5:14. & Hosea 6:1. & Hosea 13:8. like a lion, or a bear. Vers. 10. Deuteronomy 33:20. Psalms 7:2. Micah 5:8.

Lamentations 3:12

hath bent his bow] Job 7:20. & Job 16:12. Chap. 2. 4. Heb. trod it.

Lamentations 3:13

the arrows of his quiver] Heb. sonnes of his quiver. as Isaiah 21:10. See Job 6:4. & Job 16:13. Psalms 38:2.

Lamentations 3:14

a derision to all my people] Jeremiah 20:7. Or, to all people. Psalms 44:13. & Psalms 79:4. Ezekiel 36:15.

their song all the day] Heb. neginoth. or, hand-instrument of musick. Job 30:9. one whom they plaid upon, as on such an instrument, at pleasure. See Isaiah 38:20. Psalms 69:12. vers. 63.

Lamentations 3:15

He hath filled me] Heb. satiated. cloyed, or glutted me. vers. 30.

with bitternesse] Heb. bitternesses. Deuteronomy 32:32.

he hath made me drunken with wormwood] He hath so plyed me with abundance of anguish and grief, as with full cups of some heady, but unwholsome drink, that I am as one besotted and beside my self with it. Job 9:18. Psalms 60:3. Isaiah 51:17; Isaiah 51:21-22. Jeremiah 25:17-18. Chap. 1. 4. See vers. 19.

Lamentations 3:16

broken my teeth with gravel-stones] As when men eat grittie bread: of such grist as new milstones are at first wont to make. See Proverbs 20:17.

covered me with ashes] Or, rolled me in the ashes. Micah 1:10.

Lamentations 3:17

removed my soul] Or, me. as Psalms 3:2. & 22. 20, 21.

farre off from peace] Or, prosperitie. Jeremiah 29:7.

I forgat prosperitie] Heb. good. Job 9:25. I minded it no more, then as if I had never enjoyed it, or never knew what it meant. as Genesis 41:51. Job 11:16.

Lamentations 3:18

My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD] Thus in extreamitie of affliction are even the faithfull tossed to and fro, between hope and fear; though the better part at length prevail. vers. 21. Psalms 31:22. & 116. 10, 11. Isaiah 40:27. & Isaiah 49:14.

Lamentations 3:19

Remembring mine affliction] Or, Remember. as by way of petition. as Psalms 89:50. Chap. 5. 1.

the wormwood and the gall] Vers. 15. Jeremiah 9:15. Or, venome. Vers. 5. Jeremiah 8:14.

Lamentations 3:20

My soul hath them] Or, I have them. as Psalms 3:2. & Psalms 57:4. vers. 24.

still in remembrance] Heb. remembring remembreth. Jeremiah 31:20.

is humbled] Heb. bowed. Psal. 42. 5, 11. & 44. 25.

Lamentations 3:21

This I recall to my mind] Or, yet while I recall this. Heb. make to return to my heart. Deuteronomy 30:1.

therefore have I hope] Vers. 24.

Lamentations 3:22

It is of the LORDS mercies] Or, To wit, that it is the Lords great mercie. Psalms 89:1.

that we are not consumed] Considering out wickednesse, it is a wonder that it is not farre worse with us; yea that any of us yet remain; save that God will have some small remnant at least left to serve him; and that of his meere and much mercy. Psal. 130. 3, 4. Isaiah 11:9. & Isaiah 48:9. Malachi 3:6.

Lamentations 3:23

They are new every morning] Heb. in the mornings. Isaiah 33:2. His mercie and compassions are daily renewed. Job 7:18. Zeph. 3. 5.

great is thy faithfulnesse] Psalms 36:5.

Lamentations 3:24

The LORD is my portion] Psalms 16:5. & Psalms 73:26. & Psalms 119:57. Jeremiah 10:6.

saith my soul] Or, say I. as vers. 20.

therefore will I hope in him] Vers. 21. Job 13:15.

Lamentations 3:25

good unto them that wait for him] That in affliction stay patiently and attend his time. Psalms 40:1. Isaiah 30:18.

to the soul that seeketh him] Or, him that. or, the person that seeketh to him. as vers. 20.

Lamentations 3:26

It is good that a man should both hope] Psalms 2:12. & 33. 18, 20.

quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD] Genesis 49:18. Psalms 119:174. Or, It is good, that (as Psalms 135:5. & Psalms 144:3.) a man wait (as 2 Kings 6:33.) and be silent, (vers. 28. Psalms 131:2.) for (as Genesis 2:24.) the salvation of the Lord. It is good for one to wait silently, or quietly, till God please to send deliverance. Psalms 123:2. Or It is good for him so to do, in regard of the deliverance that God will vouchsafe unto those that so do. Exodus 14:13. Psalms 9:10. Isaiah 30:18.

Lamentations 3:27

that he bear the yoke in his youth] That he be enured betimes to the patient enduring of affliction; and to the strict observation of Gods law. Psalms 94:12. & Psalms 119:9. Matthew 11:29.

Lamentations 3:28

He sitteth alone and keepeth silence] Or, That he sit alone, and keep silence.

sitteth alone] Psalms 102:7. Jeremiah 15:17.

and keepeth silence] That he murmure not against God; but be quiet and patient under his hand. Psalms 39:9. & 62. 1, 5.

because he hath born it upon him] Or, when he beareth. Zephaniah 1:11. or, taketh it up. Isaiah 42:21. or, when (as Psalms 142:7.) he (that is, God) imposeth, or, layeth it on him. 2 Samuel 24:12.

Lamentations 3:29

He putteth his mouth in the dust] Or, That he put his mouth in the dust. Humbling himself, even to the ground: 2 Samuel 12:16. and stopping his mouth as it were with the dust, for fear of breaking out into any repining language. Job 40. 4, 5. & 42. 6.

if so be there may be hope] Heb. peradventure there is hope. as Genesis 32:20. Daniel 4:27.

Lamentations 3:30

He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him] Or, That he give, &c. Isa. 50 6. Matthew 5:39.

he is filled full with reproch] Or, that he be cloyed with reproch. Vers. 15. Psalms 123:4.

Lamentations 3:31

the Lord will not cast off for ever] Psalms 94:14.

Lamentations 3:32

yet will he have compassion] Mic. 7. 19.

according to the multitude of his mercies] Psalms 51:1.

Lamentations 3:33

he doth not afflict willingly] Heb. from his heart. See the like phrase 2 Kings 9:24. He taketh no delight in punishing his people; but doth what in that kinde he doth, enforced to it by their sins. Jeremiah 30:14. Or, doth not punish according to his might; but with regard to mans infirmitie. Job 37:23. Psal. 78. 38, 39. Isaiah 28:27.

Lamentations 3:34

To crush under his feet] Or, ones crushing under his feet. Or, For a man to crush under his feet. When men practise crueltie and oppression; when they tread men down and trample on them, as on durt; as the Assyrians, and Babylonians have dealt with us. Isaiah 10:6. & 14. 5 6. & 16. 4. Jeremiah 12:10. Daniel 7:7. Chap. 1. 14.

all the prisoners of the earth] Or, land. Psalms 37:3. Either the world in generall: Isaiah 14:17. or some particular countrey Ecclesiastes 5:7. as the land of Judah. Jeremiah 39:9. & Jeremiah 50:17.

Lamentations 3:35

To turn aside the right of a man] Heb. make to decline. Isaiah 10:2. or, overthrow. Proverbs 18:5.

before the face of the most High] Or, of a superiour. In the sight of God; Psalms 51:4. not dreading him, or his displeasure. Malachi 3:5. who is an avenger of such courses. Psalms 94:1. Prov. 22. 22, 23. & 23. 10, 11. 1 Thessalonians 4:6.

Lamentations 3:36

the Lord approveth not] Heb. the Lord doth not see: that is, like and approve it, Psalms 1:6. Romans 7:15. or, he cannot endure to behold it. Numbers 23. 21. Or, doth not the Lord see? that is, behold, take notice of it, although he permit it, and order it, for the just punishment of mans sinne? Psalms 10:14. Isaiah 26:17. Hab. 1. 13. vers. 59, 60.

Lamentations 3:37

Who is he that saith, and it cometh to passe, &c.] Who can, or dare say, that ought cometh to passe, without Gods permission, or appointment? Prov. 16. 4, 33. & 21. 30, 31. & 29. 26. Matth. 10. 29, 30. Or, who hath power to effect ought that he speaketh or purposeth, without Gods permission? Proverbs 16:9. Jeremiah 10:23. Jam. 4. 13, 15.

when the Lord commandeth it not] Ordaineth and appointeth it, in his secret providence. 2 Sam. 12. 11, 12. & 16. 10. 1 King. 12. 15, 24. Jeremiah 34:22. Acts 2:23. & Acts 4:28.

Lamentations 3:38

Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evill and good] Do not both come by his appointment? Job 2:10. Isaiah 45:7. Amos 3:6.

Lamentations 3:39

Wherefore doth a living man complain] Or, murmure. Numbers 11:1. When God afflicteth him. Proverbs 19:3.

a man for the punishment of his sinnes] When he suffereth nothing, but what he hath brought upon himself by his sinne. Chap. 1. 18. Jeremiah 41:8. Micah 7:9.

Lamentations 3:40

Let us search and try our wayes] Psalms 4:4. & Psalms 119:59. Zeph. 2. 1.

turn again to the LORD] Jeremiah 4:1. Joe 2:12. Zechariah 1:3.

Lamentations 3:41

Let us lift up our heart with our hands] Heb. to our hands, as Ezekiel 16:26. or, as some, to the clouds, as Job 36:32.

Lamentations 3:43

Thou hast covered with anger] Overwhelmed us with thy wrath. Psalms 42:7. & Psalms 88:7.

thou hast slain, &c.] Chap. 2. 21.

Lamentations 3:44

that our prayer should not passe through] Vers. 8.

Lamentations 3:45

made us as the off-scouring] 1 Corinthians 4:13.

and refuse] Jeremiah 6:30.

in the midst of the people] Or, amongst them. Jeremiah 40:5-6.

Lamentations 3:46

All our enemies have opened their mouthes against us] Or, do open. or, widen. Psalms 22:13. Chap. 2. 16.

Lamentations 3:47

Fear and a snare is come upon us] Isaiah 24:17.

desolation and destruction] Heb. breaking. Chap. 2. 11.

Lamentations 3:48

Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water, &c.] Chap. 1. 16. & 2. 18. Psalms 119:136. Jeremiah 9:1. & Jeremiah 14:17.

Lamentations 3:49

Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not] Chap. 1. 16. & 2. 11. vers. 48.

Lamentations 3:50

Till the LORD look down, &c.] Psalms 80:14. Isaiah 63:15.

Lamentations 3:51

Mine eye affecteth mine heart] Heb. my soul. Psalms 143:12. Maketh me faint with continuall weeping. Chap. 2. 11.

because of all the daughters of my city] Or, more then all. Jeremiah 48:32. For the common calamitie of those that dwelt in her. Luke 23:28. or, of the towns belonging to her their mother-citie. Joshua 15:45. Jeremiah 34:1. & Jeremiah 49:3.

Lamentations 3:52

Mine enemies chased me sore like a bird, without cause] Or, Those that are mine enemies without cause, have chased, or, do chase me sorely, (Heb. chasing chased, or, chase me) as a bird. 1 Samuel 26:20. Psalms 11:1. & 35. 7, 19 & 59. 4. & 69. 4. & 119. 161.

Lamentations 3:53

They have cut off my life in the dungeon] By casting me into the dungeon. as Psal. 89. 39, 44. or, and cast me into the pit. as Jeremiah 14:2. as is wont to be done with corpses of persons executed. Joshua 10:27.

and cast a stone upon me] Rolled a stone over me, to keep me fast in. Daniel 6:17. Matthew 27:60. or, cast stones on me to slay me. 1 Kings 12:18. 2 Chronicles 24:21. Ezekiel 16:40. or, to overwhelm my body being slain; as with malefactors is not unusuall. Job 7:26. & Job 8:29. 2 Samuel 18:17.

Lamentations 3:54

Waters flowed over mine head] Or, When the waters flowed over mine head. Psalms 69:2. & 124. 4, 5. When I was in great distresse, through the Assyrian forces, like a vehement land-flood, breaking in upon me, and surrounding all about me. Isa. 8. 7, 8. & 28. 9. & 59. 19.

then I said, I am cut off] Or, and I said, I am cut off. I deemed my self clean undone. Psalms 31:22. & Psalms 37:3. Isaiah 38:10-11. Jonah 2:3-4.

Lamentations 3:55

I called upon thy name] Or, Yet I called upon thy name.

out of the low dungeon] Heb. pit of lownesses. Psalms 88:6. In the depth of mine afflictions. Psalms 130:1. Vers. 53. Jonah 2:1.

Lamentations 3:56

Thou hast heard my voice] Or, And thou heardest. Thou wast then pleased to hear me and deliver me: Isa. 37. 15, 21. vouchsafe me now the like favour again. Psalms 4:1. & 22. 4, 5. & 85. 1-4,

hide not thine eare] Isaiah 1:15. Psal. 3. 12.

at my breathing] Or, panting. or, sighing.

Lamentations 3:57

Thou drewest neare] Psalms 69:18.

thou saidst, Fear not] Isaiah 37:6. & Isaiah 41:13.

Lamentations 3:58

thou hast pleaded] Jeremiah 51:36.

the causes of my soul] My causes, in generall. Psalms 7:2. or, such as concerned my life. Psalms 35:4. See vers. 17. 20. 25. Psalms 31:13.

thou hast redeemed my life] Or, resced. Psalms 69:10. & Psalms 107:2.

Lamentations 3:59

thou hast seen my wrong] Or, the wrong done to me. as Jeremiah 51:35.

judge thou my cause] Heb. my judgement. Psalms 9:4. & Psalms 43:1.

Lamentations 3:60

all their vengeance] Hostilitie and violence. Jeremiah 51:36.

all their imaginations against me] Heb. unto me. as Psalms 56:2. vers. 61.

Lamentations 3:61

Thou hast heard their reproch] Psalms 69:19. Isaiah 37:4.

all their imaginations against me] Vers. 60. Psalms 56:5.

Lamentations 3:62

The lips of those that rose up against me] Their words, speech, language. Genesis 11:1. Psalms 59:7. Zeph. 3. 9.

Lamentations 3:63

Behold their sitting down and their rising up] Or, Behold, at their sitting down, and at their rising up. At all times; and upon all occasions; early and late. Deuteronomy 6:7. Psalms 139:2. Or, at their merry meetings and feastings, first and last. Psalms 35:16. & Psalms 69:12.

I am their musick] See Vers. 14. Chap. 5. 14.

Lamentations 3:64

Render unto them a recompense, &c.] Psalms 28:4. Jeremiah 50:29. Chap. 1. 22.

Lamentations 3:65

Give them sorrow of heart] Or, obection: obstinacie of heart. like the hardnesse of a shield. 2 Chron. 23. 9. Or, obseption. such perplextie and distresse, that they may not know which way to turn themselves; being on every side beset with evils. Isaiah 31:5. Psalms 5:12.

Lamentations 3:66

Persecute and destroy them in anger] Psalms 83:15.

from under the heavens] Jeremiah 10:11. So as they may have no place under the cope of heaven to subsist in.

the heavens of the LORD] Psal 8. 3. & 115. 16.
