5 Zechariah 9:5–7 Ashkelon will see and fear; Gaza will writhe in agony, as will Ekron, for her hope will wither. There will cease to be a king in Gaza, and Ashkelon will be uninhabited. A mixed race will occupy Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines. I will remove the blood from their mouths and the abominations from between their teeth. Then they too will become a remnant for our God; they will become like a clan in Judah, and Ekron will be like the Jebusites.
6 1 Samuel 5:10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron, but as it arrived, the Ekronites cried out, “They have brought us the ark of the God of Israel in order to kill us and our people!”

Joshua 15:45 Summary

This verse, Joshua 15:45, lists Ekron as one of the cities given to the tribe of Judah, along with its surrounding towns and villages. The city of Ekron was an important location in the biblical account, and its inclusion in this list highlights the extent of the Israelites' inheritance, as promised in Deuteronomy 1:8. Just as the Israelites had to trust God for the conquest of their land, we can trust Him to provide for us and guide us in our daily lives (Psalm 37:3-7). By seeking God's guidance and surrendering our lives to Him, we can experience the same kind of faith and trust that the Israelites did as they took possession of their promised land.

Ekron is one of the cities given to the tribe of Judah as an inheritance, as seen in Joshua 15:45, and it is also mentioned in other passages such as Judges 1:18 and 1 Samuel 5:10, where it is associated with the worship of false gods.

Why does the Bible list the towns and villages of Ekron?

The Bible lists the towns and villages of Ekron to provide a detailed account of the inheritance given to the tribe of Judah, as instructed in Numbers 34:13, and to emphasize the extent of their territory.

How does this verse relate to the rest of Joshua 15?

This verse is part of a larger list of cities and towns given to the tribe of Judah, which begins in Joshua 15:21 and continues through Joshua 15:63, highlighting the fulfillment of God's promise to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 1:8.

What can we learn from the city of Ekron in terms of spiritual application?

The city of Ekron, which was known for its idolatry, serves as a reminder to be aware of the spiritual influences around us, as warned in 1 Corinthians 10:21, and to seek God's guidance in navigating our daily lives, as encouraged in Proverbs 3:5-6.

Here and in the following verses are contained all the cities of the Philistines, among which are Gath and Askelon, which peradventure are here omitted, because they were not at this time places of such power and eminency as afterwards they were, but were the daughters of some of these following cities, though afterwards the daughter might overtop the mother, as is usual.
