33.131 · Communication · Name
to call, to name to use an attribution in speaking of a person It is not always possible to determine from the context whether the act involved is an initial naming of a person or simply calling a person by a particular name. Likewise in the case of attributions or titles, it is not always possible to determine whether it is a matter of giving an attribution or title to a person or simply a matter of speaking of or to a person by means of such an attribution or title. In some instances the giving of a title may be made indirect. For example, in MAT 1:23 the statement ‘and they will call his name Emmanuel’ suggests the giving of a title, but the process is stated in terms of how people will speak of this person.

33.312 · Communication · Call
to call, to call to a task to urgently invite someone to accept responsibilities for a particular task, implying a new relationship to the one who does the calling It is rare that one can translate καλέω[d], κλῆσις[a], and προσκαλέω[b] as simply ‘to call’ in the sense of ‘to speak to someone at a distance and tell them to come.’ For example, in 2TH 2:14 it may be necessary to render the above clause as ‘through the good news we preached, which summoned you to do this.’ Similarly, in ACT 16:10 one may translate ‘because God has urgently invited us to preach the good news to the people there.’

1 It is possible that φωνέω[a] differs from καλέω[c] in focusing somewhat more upon the loudness of voice, but this cannot be determined from existing contexts. 2 It is possible that προσκαλέομαι[b] differs in meaning from καλέω[d] in emphasizing more specifically either the person who is called or the task to which one is called. 3 It is possible that παρακαλέω[b] differs somewhat in meaning from καλέω[e] and φωνέω[d] in implying some greater degree of urging.

καλέω. For this verb = ‘‘summon,” “invite,” as in Mt 22° a/., see P Oxy XII. 1487" (iv/A.D.) καλῖ σε Θέων vids ᾿Ωριγένους εἰς τοὺς γάμους THs ἀδελφῆς ἑαυτοῦ ἐν τῇ αὔριον, and similarly 26. 14861 (iv/A.p.). In both instances it is noticeable that καλῖ takes the place of the earlier ἐρωτᾷ, cf. 73. 1484, 1485. See also P Hamb I. 295 (A.D. 89) κληθέντων τινῶν . καὶ μὴ ὑπακουσάντων.
