1 Sermon Illustrations on Despair

1 illustration

Despair in Christian preaching is the crushing loss of hope and trust in God, often seen as a spiritual failure that rejects divine providence and grace. Illustrations for despair commonly use images of darkness, defeat, and self-destruction to contrast the life-giving hope found in faith (Psalm 42:11, Romans 15:13).

Despair, Evil of

Despair destroys itself by rejecting life when faced with disappointment.

Despair is like froward children, who, when you take away one of their playthings, throw the rest into the fire for madness. It grows angry with itself, turns its own executioner, and revenges its misfortunes on its own head. It refuses to live under disappointments and crosses, and chooses rather not to be at all, than to be without the thing which it hath once imagined necessary to its happiness. Charron.
