Genesis 15:12 Summary

Genesis 15:12 tells us that as the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep and was overwhelmed with great terror and darkness. This was not just a natural sleep, but a supernatural event where God was about to reveal His plans to Abram, as seen in the context of Genesis 15:13-14. Just like Abram, we can trust in God's promises, even when we do not understand His ways, as expressed in Proverbs 3:5-6. By trusting in God's sovereignty, we can find peace and comfort, even in the midst of uncertainty or darkness, just like Abram did in Genesis 15:12, and as seen in other biblical accounts like Psalm 23:4 and Isaiah 43:2.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Abram fall into a deep sleep in Genesis 15:12?

Abram fell into a deep sleep as a way for God to communicate with him, similar to how God spoke to other prophets in the Bible, such as in Numbers 24:4 and 1 Samuel 28:6. This sleep was not just a natural phenomenon, but a supernatural event where God revealed His plans to Abram.

What is the significance of great terror and darkness overwhelming Abram in Genesis 15:12?

The great terror and darkness that overwhelmed Abram signify the gravity and seriousness of the covenant God was making with him, as seen in the context of Genesis 15:13-14 where God foretells the suffering of Abram's descendants. This also foreshadows the darkness and terror that sin brings, as mentioned in Isaiah 59:9-10.

How does Genesis 15:12 relate to the rest of the chapter?

Genesis 15:12 is a pivotal verse in the chapter as it marks a shift from Abram's actions in Genesis 15:10-11 to God's direct communication with him, setting the stage for the covenant promises in Genesis 15:13-21. This verse highlights God's initiative and Abram's receptive heart, as seen in his trust in God's promises in Genesis 15:6.

What can we learn from Abram's experience in Genesis 15:12?

We can learn from Abram's experience that God often communicates with us in unexpected ways, such as through dreams or visions, as seen in Genesis 15:12 and other biblical accounts like Genesis 28:12 and 1 Kings 3:5. This teaches us to be open to God's leading and to trust in His sovereignty, even when we do not understand His ways, as expressed in Proverbs 3:5-6.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways God has spoken to you in the past, and how have you responded to His voice?
  2. How can you cultivate a deeper trust in God's promises, even when faced with uncertainty or darkness, like Abram in Genesis 15:12?
  3. What are some areas in your life where you need to trust in God's sovereignty, just like Abram did in Genesis 15:12, and how can you apply the principles of this verse to those situations?
  4. How does the concept of God's covenant with Abram in Genesis 15:12 relate to your own relationship with God, and what implications does this have for your daily life?

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Genesis 15:12

And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him. A deep sleep , [ tardeemaah (H8639)] - a preternatural sleep, produced by God (see the note at Genesis 11:21).

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Genesis 15:12

A deep sleep fell upon Abram; partly natural, from his labour in killing and sacrificing those creatures; and partly sent upon him from God, to make way for the following representation. He seemed to be covered with a dreadful darkness, which was either, 1. A token of God’ s special presence: compare . Or, 2. A signification of the distressed and doleful condition of Abram’ s seed; for darkness in Scripture is frequently mentioned as an emblem or sign of great misery, as 107:14, &c.

Trapp's Commentary on Genesis 15:12

Ellicott's Commentary on Genesis 15:12

(12) When the sun was going down.—The time described was the evening following the night on which he had received the assurance that his seed should be countless as the stars. He had then, in his trance, also asked for some security that Canaan should be the heritage of his posterity, and in answer had received the command to arrange, upon a large scale, the ceremonial of a solemn treaty-making. The morning had been spent in the performance of the command, and after wards he had watched, probably for several hours, by the side of the divided bodies, uncertain what would happen, but occupied in driving away the vultures, which gathered from all quarters round the abundant feast. At sunset the revelation came to him, not in a waking trance, as on the previous night, but in “a deep sleep,” and with those accompaniments of terror so powerfully described in Job 4:12-16, and which the creature cannot but feel when brought near to the manifest presence of the Creator (Daniel 10:8). Lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.—Heb., lo, a terror, even great darkness, falling upon him. The terror was not mental so much as bodily, caused by a deep gloom settling round him, such as would be the effect of an eclipse of the setting sun, and shutting all mortal things away from his view.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Genesis 15:12

Verse 12. A deep sleep] תרדמה tardemah, the same word which is used to express the sleep into which Adam was cast, previous to the formation of Eve; Genesis 2:21.
