22. The Prayers of Jesus

4 min read · Chapter 23 of 36

The Prayers of Jesus The Lords Prayer.

(a)Matthew 6:9-13 : Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.[1]

[1]In the original, this is probably to be regarded personally— the evil one. But to a modern and western ear, the familiar translation better represents the essential idea, and may even be correct: it finds considerable support inRomans 12:9,abhorringthat which is evil” where the word is unambiguously neuter. (Cf.John 17:15).

(b)Luke 11:2-4 : Father, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come.

Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we ourselves also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And bring us not into temptation.

Thanksgiving.

Matthew 11:25-26; Luke 10:21. I praise Thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that Thou didst hide these things from the wise and understanding, and didst reveal them unto babes; yea, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in Thy sight.

Prayer in Gethsemane.

(а)Matthew 26:39. My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass away from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt.

(b)Matthew 26:42. My Father, if this cannot pass away, except I drink it, Thy will be done.

(c)Mark 14:36. Abba, Father, all things are possible unto Thee; take away this cup from me. Nevertheless not what I will, but what Thou wilt.

(d)Luke 22:42. Father, if Thou be willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless not my will, but Thine be done.

Another prayer upon the Cross:Matthew 27:46;Mark 15:34 My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?

Prayer upon the Cross:Luke 23:34 Father, forgive them; for they know hot what they do. The last prayer upon the Cross:Luke 23:46 Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit. At the grave of Lazarus:John 11:41-42

Father, I thank Thee that Thou heardest me. And I know that Thou hearest me always; but because of the multitude that standeth around, I said it, that they may believe that Thou hast sent me.

Now is my soul trouble:John 12:27 Father, save me from this hour. [1] But for this cause came I unto this hour. Father, glorify Thy name.

[1]Or this clause may be read interrogatively; “Shall I say, ‘ Father save me from this hour ’?” In that case, this is a prayer which Jesus refuses to pray.

Intercessory Prayer: John 17

Father, the hour is come; glorify Thy Son, that the Son may glorify Thee; even as Thou gavest Him authority over all flesh, that, to as many as Thou hast given Him, He should give eternal life. I glorified Thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which Thou hast given me to do; and now, Father, glorify Thou me with Thine own self with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was.

I manifested Thy name unto the men whom Thou gavest me out of the world. Thine they were, and Thou gavest them to me; and they have kept Thy word. Now they know that all things whatsoever Thou hast given me are from Thee; for the words which Thou gavest me I have given unto them, and they received them, and knew of a truth that I came forth from Thee, and they believed that Thou didst send me. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for those whom Thou hast given me, for they are Thine; and all things that are mine are Thine, and Thine are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no more in the world, and these are in the world, and I come to Thee. Holy Father, keep them in Thy name which Thou hast given me, that they may be one, even as we.

While I was with them, I kept them in Thy name which Thou hast given me; and I guarded them, and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I come to Thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them Thy word; and the world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth. As Thou didst send me into the world, even so send I them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.

Neither for these only do I pray, but for them also that believe on me through their word; that they all may be one—even as Thou, Father, art in me, and I in Thee, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that Thou didst send me. And the glory which Thou hast given me I have given unto them, that they may be one, even as we are one; I in them and Thou in me—that they may be perfected into one: that the world may know that Thou didst send me, and didst love them as even Thou didst love me.

Father, I desire that they also, whom Thou hast given me, be with me where I am, that they may behold my glory which Thou hast given me; for Thou didst love me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world knew Thee not, but I knew Thee, and these knew that Thou didst send me, and I made known unto them Thy name, and will make it known, that the love wherewith Thou didst love me may be in them, and I in them.
