There Is No God

Job 37:14

Several years ago Our Daily Bread carried a devotional piece entitled "There Is No God." I want to read it to you:

"All the wonders around you are accidental. No Almighty hand made a thousand billion stars. They made themselves. The surface of our land just happened to have topsoil, without which we would have no vegetables to eat, and no grass for the animals whose meat is our food. The inexhaustible envelope of air, only 50 miles deep and of exactly the right density to support human life, is just another law of physics. Water expands when it freezes, while other substances contract. This makes ice lighter than water and keeps it floating on the surface. Otherwise lakes would be solid ice down to the bottom, and no fish could survive. We have day and night because the earth spins at a given speed without slowing down.

Who made this arrangement? Who tilts it so that we get seasons? The sun's fire does not generate too much heat so that we fry, but just enough so that we do not freeze. Who keeps this fire constant? The human heart will beat for 70 or 80 years without faltering. How does it get sufficient rest between beats? A kidney will filter poison from the blood and leave the good things alone. How does it know one from the other? Who gave the human tongue flexibility to form words, and who made a brain to understand them? Is it all accidental? Is there really not a God?"

No Need For God? Stephen Hawking Defies Divine Creation

Professor Stephen Hawking is a remarkable human being. His courage and tenacity are an inspiration to all. His work on the theory of gravity has changed the way the field of physics is taught. But, when he crosses that border from science to theology, his worldview leads him into abject disaster.

By any measure, Stephen Hawking is one of the most famous and influential figures in modern science. For thirty years, he served as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, and his career before and after his decades in that post is the stuff of scientific legend. He is also probably the longest-living person ever to be diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS], and the very fact that he has been productive since that diagnosis at age 21 is a testimony to his sense of personal mission and sheer determination.

Professor Hawking is out with a new book, and in THE GRAND DESIGN, he, along with co-author Leonard Mlodinow, now presses his case against God — or at least against any role for God in the origin of the universe or the beginning of time.

Asking the most basic questions of the universe’s existence, Hawking and Mlodinow assert: “Some would claim the answer to these questions is that there is a God who chose to create the universe that way. It is reasonable to ask who or what created the universe, but if the answer is God, then the question has merely been deflected to that of who created God. In this view it is accepted that some entity exists that needs no creator, and that entity is called God. This is known as the first-cause argument for the existence of God. We claim, however, that it is possible to answer these questions purely within the realm of science, and without invoking any divine beings.”

In the pages of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL last week, Hawking and Mlodinow summarized their case against God. After presenting a case for the incredible fine-tuning that was required for conscious life on earth, they argued that the incredible “coincidences” involved in this fine-tuning are not evidence of the work of God. To the contrary, they conclude that science can provide all the necessary answers: “As recent advances in cosmology suggest, the laws of gravity and quantum theory allow universes to appear spontaneously from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going.” The headline of their article, “Why God Did Not Create the Universe,” pulled no punches.

Major newspapers and media outlets across the globe announced that Stephen Hawking had now come out against belief in God. Yet, a closer look at the evidence suggests that this is actually nothing new for Professor Hawking. All of the major arguments presented in THE GRAND DESIGN have appeared earlier in Hawking’s previous books or in interviews.

As has been argued before by others, Professor Hawking tends to deploy arguments about God when he wants to sell books. Nevertheless, given his stature and influence, his ideas are worth careful attention.

The major thrusts of THE GRAND DESIGN are the magnificence of the universe and the glory of theoretical physics. Hawking is committed to what he calls “M-Theory,” a “super-string theory” that encompasses a host of theories and predictions about the nature of matter and time. Most importantly, this theory allows Hawking and Mlodinow to advance Hawking’s theory that space and time have no boundary. If such a boundary did exist, Hawking allows that God might be a necessary or allowable theory of how all this began. But, if there is no boundary, there is no reason for God at all — the universe is self-explanatory.

Hawking actually believes that there are countless universes, and that the laws of physics on each might be radically different from all the rest. What we do know is our own universe and its operational laws, and these, he insists, do not require any notion of a divine Creator. “Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing,” Hawking and Mlodinow explain.

But is this really new? In his 1988 best-seller, A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME, Hawking made very similar arguments and received strikingly similar press coverage. “So long as the universe had a beginning, we could suppose it had a creator,” he explained. But, Hawking rejected the very idea of a beginning as such, and so he actually dispensed with the need for any Creator. Furthermore, he was certain that his theories rendered any belief in a traditional deity to be groundless.

In his infamous introduction to the first edition of A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME, the late astronomer Professor Carl Sagan asserted, “This is a book about God ... or perhaps about the absence of God.” Even more famously, Sagan argued that Hawking’s theories meant that there is now “nothing for a Creator to do.” Oddly, when A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME was reissued for a tenth anniversary edition, Sagan’s introduction was deleted.

Hawking has acknowledged that his work “is on the borderline between science and religion, but I have tried to stay on the scientific side of the border.” That seems a strange comment, given the fact that he so routinely crosses that border.

On the other hand, that statement does betray another straightforward dimension of Hawking’s thought. He seems to imagine God only in terms of a deistic deity and a “God of the gaps” who serves as a causal explanation only when all naturalistic theories run out of steam. If nothing else, Hawking’s writings should warn Christians from taking refuge in any “God of the gaps” form of theological argument. If we invoke God only when we run out of other explanations, we will find God disappearing into a cloud of theory and endless theological surrender.

The God of the Bible is not merely a First Cause — He is the sovereign Creator and Sustainer of all that is, who rules the universe by His Word. Christians must recognize the “God of the gaps” as a false idol of theological surrender. Furthermore, Christians must also understand that any scientific admission of God as a possible First Cause without continuing rule over creation is no cause for celebration. The triune God cannot be reduced to a First Cause among other causes.

Stephen Hawking’s worldview is based in positivistic scientism. He really believes that science holds all the answers. “Philosophy is dead,” he asserts in this newest book. Why? “Philosophy has not kept up with modern developments in science, particularly physics.”

In his 1980 inaugural address, given as he was installed as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, Hawking proposed that the great project of theoretical physics might be concluded by the end of the twentieth century. “By this I mean that we might have a complete, consistent, and unified theory of the physical interactions which would describe all possible observations.”

That statement speaks profoundly to Professor Hawking’s intellectual ambition — to explain the universe and all of its “possible observations.” That is nothing less than titanic in scale of ambition. Indeed, it is the quintessential audacity of a brilliant secular mind.

Professor Stephen Hawking is a remarkable human being. His courage and tenacity are an inspiration to all. His work on the theory of gravity has changed the way the field of physics is taught. But, when he crosses that border from science to theology, his worldview leads him into abject disaster. THE GRAND DESIGN is yet another attempt to celebrate the universe’s breathtaking design, while denying the existence of a Designer. It will not be the last.

The Supremacy of God In Missions Through Worship

Job 37:4

Charles Misner, a scientific specialist in general relativity theory, expressed Albert Einstein's skepticism over the church with words that should waken us to the shallowness of our experience with God in worship:

"The design of the universe ... is very magnificent and shouldn't

be taken for granted. In fact, I believe that is why Einstein

had so little use for organized religion, although he strikes me

as a basically very religious man. HE MUST HAVE LOOKED AT WHAT

THE PREACHER SAID ABOUT GOD AND FELT THAT THEY WERE BLASPHEMING.

HE HAD SEEN MUCH MORE MAJESTY THAN THEY HAD EVER IMAGINED, AND

THEY WERE JUST NOT TALKING ABOUT THE REAL THING. My guess is

that he simply felt that religions he'd run across did not have

proper respect ... for the author of the universe."

The charge of blasphemy is loaded. The point is to pack a wallop behind the charge that in our worship services God simply doesn't come through for who he is. He is unwittingly belittled. For those who are stunned by the indescribable magnitude of what God has made, not to mention the infinite greatness of the One who made it, the steady diet on Sunday morning of practical "how to's" and psychological soothing and relational therapy and tactical planning seem dramatically out of touch with Reality - the God of overwhelming greatness.

George Washington Carver: Not Just Peanuts

An agricultural chemist of international fame, George Washington Carver developed hundreds of uses for the peanut, soybean, pecan, and sweet potato. He wanted to help the poor southern farmer whose soil was depleted from years of raising cotton. His discoveries from these plants included shaving cream, salad oil, instant coffee, vinegar, cold cream, synthetic tapioca, and non- toxic colors, from which crayons were eventually created.

A Congressman once asked Carver where he learned all these things. He said from an old book, the Bible. The Senator was amazed that the Bible told about peanuts. Carver replied that it didn't, "But it tells about the God who made the peanut. I asked Him to show me what to do with the peanut, and He did."

Clockwork Origins?

Philosophical foes Richard Dawkins and Phillip Johnson both miss the point of the argument from design.

Richard Dawkins is absolutely confident that science will finally accomplish what philosophy has been unable to do in more than 2,000 years -- make theism intellectually indefensible.

Dawkins, a fellow of New College at Oxford University and the author of several best-selling expositions of Darwinism, acknowledges that prior to Darwin, philosophers who rejected belief in a divine creator had no good explanation for the order and complexity of living organisms. An atheist like David Hume could only say to a theist: "I have no explanation for complex biological design. All I know is that God isn't a good explanation, so we must wait and hope that somebody comes up with a better one." According to Dawkins, Darwin supplied that better explanation and "made it possible to be an intellectually fulfilled atheist."

Dawkins is quite explicit that Darwinism is more than simply a scientific theory. In the preface to his most recent book, "River Out of Eden: A Darwinian View of Life" (the title is taken from Genesis 2:10), Dawkins writes,

Not only does the Darwinian theory command superabundant power to explain. Its economy in doing so has a sinewy elegance, a poetic beauty that outclasses even the most haunting of the world's origin myths. One of my purposes in writing this book has been to accord due recognition to the inspirational quality of our modern understanding of Darwinian life. There is more poetry in Mitochondrial Eve than in her mythological namesake.

Indeed, Dawkins is a forceful and persuasive advocate of Darwinism precisely because he does not belittle the order and complexity of the natural world that theists point to as evidence of a creator. In "The Blind Watchmaker: Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe Without Design," Dawkins attempts to better William Paley's description of the marvelous complexity of the human eye by describing the incredible engineering wonders that make it possible for bats to "see" with their ears. Dawkins insists, however, that the "good design" seemingly apparent in human eyes and bat ears is, in fact, the product of cumulative selection working on random errors in the genetic code.

The notion of cumulative selection is at the heart of Dawkins's argument. He agrees with many theists who argue that the odds against atoms bouncing around in the void and by chance arranging themselves into a human eye or a bat's ear are too astronomical to be taken seriously. Of course, pre- Darwinian atheists like Hume argued that in an infinite amount of time anything is possible. But while this argument might satisfy a philosopher, Dawkins does not think such a response will ever satisfy one who has spent much time examining the amazing complexities of nature.

To explain such wonders it is necessary, he says, that we understand the power of cumulative selection. Cumulative selection is simply the ability of living organisms to transmit to their progeny useful errors in the genetic code while weeding out those that are harmful to the organism. While the errors in the genetic code are wholly random, the selection of small but useful changes is not random. This is the all-important difference between Humean and Darwinian explanations of biological complexity. To illustrate this difference, Dawkins considers a single line from Shakespeare's Hamlet: "Methinks it is like a weasel." The odds against a monkey producing this sentence by randomly hitting keys on a typewriter, Dawkins calculates, are "about 1 in 10,000 million million million million million million. To put it mildly, the phrase we seek would be a long time coming, to say nothing of the complete works of Shakespeare." Since a single cell is vastly more complex than this line from Shakespeare, Dawkins says that it is simply not reasonable to believe that organic cells evolved by chance in a single step.

But suppose a computer starts with a random sequence of 28 letters (the number of letters in the sentence from Hamlet, counting each space between words as a "letter") and duplicates the sequence repeatedly, but with a certain chance of random error (or "mutation") in the copying. The computer examines the mutant nonsense phrases, the progeny of the original phrase, and chooses the one that, however slightly, most resembles the target phrase ("Methinks it is like a weasel"). Or, to use a familiar game analogy, consider the difference in the odds between rolling five dice in three tries so they all are sixes and rolling a Yahtzee -- five sixes in three tries but now allowing the player to select and keep any of the dice that serve his purpose and rethrowing the others. When Dawkins wrote a program to play computer Yahtzee with "Methinks it is like a weasel" as its goal, his computer came up with the winning combination in only 43 tries.

Now there is an obvious objection to this analogy that Dawkins anticipates. While the processes inside the computer may have been random, the target phrase was supplied by Dawkins himself, not random chance. Therefore, following the analogy, if evolution is to work, it must have a target or goal supplied by an intelligent being -- not a happy conclusion from Dawkins's point of view, since he says that evolution has no long-term goal and no controlling intelligence.

To circumvent this objection, Dawkins wrote a computer program in which extremely simple stick figures randomly evolve into complex figures. Using the principle of cumulative selection, within a period of only 30 to 40 generations, amazingly lifelike pictures evolve of everything from jumping spiders to a man wearing a hat. And in this case, there never was a preselected target. This illustrates in Dawkins's mind how evolution can proceed without any goal other than the survival of the individual organism.

But this leads to a second objection. To speak of an organism's survival presupposes the existence of creatures able to reproduce. "The theory of the blind watchmaker is extremely powerful," says Dawkins, "given that we are allowed to assume replication and hence cumulative selection." Dawkins realizes that this is a big assumption because he has already told us that the complexity necessary for even a single cell to replicate itself is much greater than the odds against the chance creation of a single hemoglobin molecule or "1 with 190 noughts after it!" To which he adds, "And a hemoglobin molecule has only a minute fraction of the complexity of a living body." In other words, cumulative selection can only provide a naturalistic explanation of the complexity if replicators exist. But cumulative selection cannot, without arguing in a circle, explain the existence of primitive replicators, which are themselves astronomically complex.

At this stage, Dawkins admits that "we cannot escape the need to postulate a single-step chance event in the origin of the cumulative selection itself." While Dawkins believes the number of planets in the universe is large enough to make this single-step chance event sufficiently probable so as to have happened on at least one planet (ours), he does not hide the speculative nature of his argument at this point. "This chapter has had," he writes, "the modest aim of explaining only the kind of way in which it [the origin of life] must have happened." In other words, when it comes to the origin of life1, even Dawkins relies on philosophical arguments: Well, I don't know how life originated, but I know God isn't a good explanation.

If Dawkins represents Darwinian orthodoxy, Phillip Johnson is the Darwin establishment's most prominent critic. Johnson, a professor of law at the University of California, Berkeley, entered the evolution debate with the bestseller "Darwin on Trial." He resembles Dawkins in his ability to present his views clearly and persuasively to a large audience.

Johnson says that he approaches "the creation-evolution dispute not as a scientist but as a professor of law, which means among other things that I know something about the ways that words are used in arguments." Now one of the first things lawyers learn is that the burden of proof falls on the prosecution, not the defense. Though the title "Darwin on Trial" is ambiguous, Johnson assumes the role of a defense attorney: he does not attempt to prove theism to be true; he only attempts to show that Darwin's case against theism is unproven. He objects that the National Academy of Science's "rule against negative argument automatically eliminates the possibility that science has not discovered how complex organisms could have developed. However wrong the current answer may be, it stands until a better answer arrives. It is as if a criminal defendant were not allowed to present an alibi unless he could also show who did commit the crime."

Further, the Academy of Science rules out a priori supernatural explanations as antithetical to the scientific method. Its position is "heads I win, tails you lose." If theists provide a supernatural explanation for biological complexity, naturalistic scientists rule such an explanation out of court. On the other hand, if creationists limit themselves to pointing out weaknesses in the evolutionists' arguments, evolutionists complain that creationists have no positive account to explain the evidence.

Johnson's frustration with the academy is understandable given his reliance on Karl Popper's philosophy of science. The last chapter of Darwin on Trial, "Science and Pseudoscience," begins by asserting that "Karl Popper provides the indispensable starting point for understanding the difference between science and pseudoscience." According to Popper, the mark of real science is that it makes risky predictions that open its theories to the possibility of falsification.Pseudoscientific theories, such as those of Marxists and Freudians, are formulated in such a way that no matter what occurs, they win. As Johnson wittily summarizes, "If wages fell this was because the capitalists were exploiting the workers, as Marx predicted they would, and if wages rose this was because the capitalists were trying to save a rotten system with bribery, which was also what Marxism predicted. A psychoanalyst could explain why a man would commit murder -- or, with equal facility, why the same man would sacrifice his own life to save another." Such "heads I win, tails you lose" arguments clearly deserve the label "pseudoscience."

So is the Academy of Science's defense of evolution itself a species of pseudoscience? The issues raised here go to the very heart of much-debated questions in the philosophy of science. One event in the history of science illustrates the problem.

By the late nineteenth century, Newtonian physics reigned without rivals. So much was this the case, that when slight irregularities (from the Newtonian point of view) in the orbit of Uranus were observed by astronomers, they refused to believe that Newton's theory was false, or even in need of correction. Instead, they calculated where and how big a heretofore unobserved planet would have to be in order to account for the irregularities of Uranus's orbit. Shortly thereafter, astronomers pointed their telescopes to the predicted location and were rewarded with the discovery of Neptune.

A short time later, similar irregularities in the orbit of Mercury were observed. Following the same procedures, theoretical astronomers calculated where the missing planet would have to be according to Newton. Given the previous successes of Newtonian physics, it did not seem to be an act of hubris when the missing planet was given a name, Vulcan, before it was ever observed.2

But this time, there was a difference. Observations never revealed another missing planet. However, this "negative evidence" was not considered either a reason to stop looking for Vulcan or proof that Newton's theories were imperfect until Einstein came up with an alternative naturalistic explanation for Mercury's irregularities.

It is events such as this in the history of science that have led to the negative-evidence rule and the requirement that naturalistic alternatives be provided. Philosophically speaking, it is not obvious that the Academy of Science has stacked the deck in its favor. After all, as physicist Owen Gingerich observes, "science's great success has been in the production of a remarkably coherent view of nature rather than in an intricately dovetailed set of proofs."3 Though followers of Popper had hoped to discover a clean demarcation between the sciences and philosophy, cases like this have led most scientists and philosophers to conclude that the division between cutting-edge science and difficult philosophical questions -- such as whether the universe is the result of chance or design -- is pretty fuzzy.

Whatever one thinks about the purely scientific case for evolution, few Christians would disagree with Johnson that evolution has become the idol of many moderns. As we noted earlier, when it comes to biogenesis, even Dawkins becomes openly philosophical: "The present lack of a definitely accepted account of the origin of life should certainly not be taken as a stumbling block for the whole Darwinian world view."

As Dawkins here admits, and as Johnson will not allow us to ignore, evolution is more than a purely scientific theory; it has become part and parcel of what might be called the "naturalistic popular culture." In "Scientific American," "The Sciences", and other leading magazines, in the steadily increasing output of science books for the general reader (by Dawkins, Stephen Jay Gould, and a host of other scientists who are also skillful writers), in television documentaries such as the Pbs-aired "The Human Quest" -- in these and many other forums (including countless classrooms), the compelling evidence for evolution and the dubious dogmas of naturalism are presented as a seamless whole, under the unchallengeable authority of Science.

In his new book, "Reason in the Balance: The Case Against Naturalism in Science, Law, and Education," Johnson clearly demonstrates this cultural connection between evolution and naturalism. He also addresses the difficult legal and political issues that such a connection raises. If evolution is more than a scientific explanation of the observed data, then how should evolution be taught in the public schools? And how should Christian scientists respond to dominance of their disciplines by naturalistic philosophy? Johnson's advice to Christians seems to be this: fight in the courts and actively resist in the academy.

While the general thrust of Johnson's position is clear, several of the particulars need further clarification. In the opening chapter of Reason in the Balance, Johnson reviews the 1987 Supreme Court decision Edwards v. Aguillard, in which the Court declared unconstitutional the Arkansas statute requiring that creation science be taught whenever evolution was taught. He writes, "suppose the basic claim of 'creationism' is that God created us, whether he did so suddenly a few thousand years ago or gradually over a much longer period of time. Suppose further that creationists claim that certain features of living organisms, such as the extreme complexity of even the simplest living organism, give support to their claim that a preexisting intelligence was necessary for biological creation" (emphasis added). Having clarified the essential issue, Johnson argues that it was the Court's naturalistic bias, not sound legal reasoning, that drove them to forbid the teaching of creationism in public schools.

The problem with Johnson's argument is that his two essential suppositions are quite different. The first supposition focuses on the fact that God created us, not on how he created us. It defines a position that theistic evolutionists such as Nancy Murphey, William Hasker, and Owen Gingerich could all endorse. As someone said of astronomy in Galileo's time, the Bible tells us how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go. The second supposition, on the other hand, is really a summation of Paley's teleological argument for the existence of God, a standard topic in Introduction to Philosophy courses taught to college freshmen around the nation.

Commenting on the Court's decision, Johnson writes, "the majority opinion in Edwards said that the state was not only permitted to exclude the creationist viewpoint but was required to do so -- and not because belief in a supernatural Creator is necessarily false or irrational, but precisely because it is religious. The logic implies that creationist arguments must be excluded regardless of the merits and that students may hear only the naturalistic viewpoint on the subject of origins." But what is "the creationist viewpoint": the first or the second supposition? It cannot be the first, because theistic evolutionists have no desire to restrict the current teaching of biological evolution. But if it is the second, then Johnson is implicitly requesting that standard issues in college philosophy courses be taught in high-school biology courses. And if the unbiased treatment of Paley's argument is to be maintained in the public schools, then philosophers will insist that it be balanced with something like David Hume's "Dialogue on Natural Religion."

The issue is further complicated when Johnson writes, "Science always has to fight the prevalent bias of the age if it is to be free to follow the evidence where it leads. In the past, geology had to free itself from religious bias so that it could consider possibilities like an old Earth or the occurrence of ice ages rather than a worldwide flood. That job was accomplished long ago, and now scientific thought is restricted by naturalistic bias." Comments such as this, repudiating the ten-thousand-year-old Earth and the flood geology of the Institute for Creation Research (ICR), have led scholars such as Mark Noll and Alvin Plantinga to speak of Johnson as a more reasonable critic of evolution than his young-Earth predecessors. But to say that the refutation of young-Earth creationism was accomplished long ago is itself problematic. Does Johnson simply mean to say that there is no credible scientific evidence in favor of a young Earth? Or does he mean that young-Earth creationists are as nonexistent as flat-earthers?

Either interpretation causes difficulties for Johnson. To say that almost no one believes in a young Earth is simply false. According to a 1991 Gallup poll, 47 percent of Americans believe that God made man -- as man is now -- in a single act of creation, and within the last ten thousand years.4 And, of course, this is the position taken by the ICR.

The other interpretation, however, causes even greater difficulties for Johnson's criticism of the Edwards decision. He writes, "If a high-school curriculum incorporates the subject of biological origins, and if supernatural creation is a rational alternative to naturalistic evolution within that subject, then it is bad educational policy as well as viewpoint discrimination to try to keep students ignorant of an alternative that may be true. The problem for Johnson is that the Arkansas case was about a law that defined creation science as including "the occurrence of a worldwide flood and a relatively recent inception of the Earth and living kinds."5 Now, Johnson cannot have it both ways: he cannot reject flood geology and a young Earth as refuted long ago and still find the Supreme Court guilty of bias in requiring that such positions not be taught in biology courses.

It seems that Johnson has at least three distinct understandings of what constitutes a creationist. The first (theistic evolution) is simply the belief that God created the Earth and everything on it irrespective of how or when he accomplished this.6 The second (Paley's argument) is the belief that the biological complexity exhibited on Earth can only be adequately accounted for by positing the existence of a supernatural creator. The third (icr's position, and the most common meaning of "creationist") entails belief in a universal flood and a relatively recent creation of the Earth.

While Johnson moves back and forth among these three definitions as the argument necessitates, it is only the second that he does not himself repudiate in other places. As we have just seen, he explicitly rejects flood geology and a young Earth. And concerning theistic evolution, he has said that this "manner of thinking is profoundly atheistic.... That is why I think the appropriate term for the accommodationist position is not 'theistic evolution' but rather theistic naturalism. Under either name, it is a disastrous error."7

Though Johnson's conclusion is, in one sense, diametrically opposed to Dawkins's viewpoint, in another sense he and Dawkins are not that far removed: both assume that a current biological theory will have substantial effect on a perennial philosophical issue. Dawkins explicitly sets out to refute Paley's explanation of biological complexity by replacing it with cumulative selection (biological evolution), while Johnson's defense of creationism is, in fact, no more than an attempt to save Paley's argument from the attack launched by Dawkins. Both assume (wrongly, I believe) that the argument from design as formulated by Paley is an essential element of Christianity.

Theistic evolution, Johnson argues, is fundamentally misguided in its willingness to accommodate Christianity to the course of modern science. In Johnson's mind, accommodation is but the first step to appeasement, and we all know what happens when we try to appease a tyrant. As William Jennings Bryan once said, theistic evolution is an anesthetic used to remove a Christian's faith without pain. Once it is assumed that evolution and Christianity are compatible, there is a slippery slope where the slide to atheism is unstoppable. The assumption of compatibility implies that one day science might incontestably prove that evolution is true. And if this occurs, then sooner or later Christianity will be viewed as merely the disposable belief of a few religious fanatics.8

The argument here is historical. Once people accept a scientific explanation for what was long held to be the result of divine agency, then, within a few generations or centuries, belief in God's power is seriously eroded. Early Christians prayed to God for healing. Now that we know about bacteria, we ask a doctor for penicillin.Prayer for healing seems natural to moderns only after doctors determine there is nothing more medicine can do.

This is a sad truth in the history of Christendom. As our knowledge of God's creation has increased, our trust in the Creator has decreased. But science itself is not the problem. Luke records the time Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God while in prison, when all of a sudden the gates of the prison flew open. In his description (Acts 16:26), Luke makes no attempt to hide the fact that it was an earthquake that caused the gates to open. And why should he? If this event in Paul and Silas's missionary work is recorded in Scripture to increase our trust and confidence in God, there is no reason to hide, ignore, or explain away the efficient cause God used to do his will.

There are two compatible understandings of the events recorded in Acts: first, its efficient cause was the shifting of geological plates along fault lines; second, it was a display of God's providence and his sovereign control of creation. The second explanation adds to without subtracting from the first.Many theistic evolutionists defend an analogous understanding of God's creation of the universe and all that it contains.

When Asa Gray, a Harvard professor of botany, friend of Darwin, avowed Christian, and perhaps the first explicit theistic evolutionist, made similar arguments, his critics replied, "Professor Gray simply says that development [evolution] is harmonious with theism. But we want what will prove theism."9 Professor Johnson has the same desire. If human existence, he says in Christianity Today, is merely "a combination of chance events and impersonal natural laws ...[then] Christian theists would deserve their marginalized status in the academic world." He repeats this point in "Reason in the Balance." Theistic evolution (a position Johnson prefers to call "methodological naturalism") "seems to rely on 'faith' -- in the sense of belief without evidence," and that, he says, "is why theists are a marginalized minority in the academic world and always on the defensive."

While Dawkins and Johnson represent important positions in the ongoing debate over evolution, they do not exhaust the alternatives. There is, for example, a powerful alternative viewpoint from the Thomistic tradition.10 Thomistic Christians share Johnson's distaste for those who, out of timidity or ignorance, leave their faith at the laboratory or library door. But they would insist that there is no incompatibility between the best scientific account of the efficient causes operative in the natural world and the psalmist's assurance that "The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork" (Ps. 19:1). And when scientists leave their area of expertise to boast that biology will soon discover the answer to all our questions about where humans came from and where they are going, then they are engaged in philosophical speculation that Thomists are quick to critique.

In doing so, Thomistic Christians follow Aquinas's dictum that grace always completes nature, it never contradicts nature. Thus, they argue that evolution and theism are compatible, but that an evolutionary explanation itself requires a theistic foundation.11 Like all foundations, it is not on the same level as the house it supports.

Johnson's confusion, from the Thomistic point of view, is that he looks for evidence of theism in the house itself -- that is, the chain of efficient causes leading to the existence of life on Earth. Hence, he points to gaps in the fossil record and "the failure of molecular evidence to confirm either the reality of common ancestors or the adequacy of the Darwinist mechanism." Thomists, on the other hand, argue that the evidence of final causation is conceptual and is observed at a higher level of analysis. Final causes do not exist between efficient causes or at the beginning of a temporal series of efficient causes. Instead, they are the logically necessary foundation of efficient causes. Any attempt to make science self-sufficient is doomed to failure.

Whatever one thinks about the purely scientific case for evolution, few Christians would disagree with Johnson that evolution has become the idol of many moderns. As we noted earlier, when it comes to biogenesis, even Dawkins becomes openly philosophical: "The present lack of a definitely accepted account of the origin of life should certainly not be taken as a stumbling block for the whole Darwinian world view."

As Dawkins here admits, and as Johnson will not allow us to ignore, evolution is more than a purely scientific theory; it has become part and parcel of what might be called the "naturalistic popular culture." In "Scientific American," "The Sciences", and other leading magazines, in the steadily increasing output of science books for the general reader (by Dawkins, Stephen Jay Gould, and a host of other scientists who are also skillful writers), in television documentaries such as the Pbs-aired "The Human Quest" -- in these and many other forums (including countless classrooms), the compelling evidence for evolution and the dubious dogmas of naturalism are presented as a seamless whole, under the unchallengeable authority of Science.

In his new book, "Reason in the Balance: The Case Against Naturalism in Science, Law, and Education," Johnson clearly demonstrates this cultural connection between evolution and naturalism. He also addresses the difficult legal and political issues that such a connection raises. If evolution is more than a scientific explanation of the observed data, then how should evolution be taught in the public schools? And how should Christian scientists respond to dominance of their disciplines by naturalistic philosophy? Johnson's advice to Christians seems to be this: fight in the courts and actively resist in the academy.

While the general thrust of Johnson's position is clear, several of the particulars need further clarification. In the opening chapter of Reason in the Balance, Johnson reviews the 1987 Supreme Court decision Edwards v. Aguillard, in which the Court declared unconstitutional the Arkansas statute requiring that creation science be taught whenever evolution was taught. He writes, "suppose the basic claim of 'creationism' is that God created us, whether he did so suddenly a few thousand years ago or gradually over a much longer period of time. Suppose further that creationists claim that certain features of living organisms, such as the extreme complexity of even the simplest living organism, give support to their claim that a preexisting intelligence was necessary for biological creation" (emphasis added). Having clarified the essential issue, Johnson argues that it was the Court's naturalistic bias, not sound legal reasoning, that drove them to forbid the teaching of creationism in public schools.

The problem with Johnson's argument is that his two essential suppositions are quite different. The first supposition focuses on the fact that God created us, not on how he created us. It defines a position that theistic evolutionists such as Nancy Murphey, William Hasker, and Owen Gingerich could all endorse. As someone said of astronomy in Galileo's time, the Bible tells us how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go. The second supposition, on the other hand, is really a summation of Paley's teleological argument for the existence of God, a standard topic in Introduction to Philosophy courses taught to college freshmen around the nation.

Commenting on the Court's decision, Johnson writes, "the majority opinion in Edwards said that the state was not only permitted to exclude the creationist viewpoint but was required to do so -- and not because belief in a supernatural Creator is necessarily false or irrational, but precisely because it is religious. The logic implies that creationist arguments must be excluded regardless of the merits and that students may hear only the naturalistic viewpoint on the subject of origins." But what is "the creationist viewpoint": the first or the second supposition? It cannot be the first, because theistic evolutionists have no desire to restrict the current teaching of biological evolution. But if it is the second, then Johnson is implicitly requesting that standard issues in college philosophy courses be taught in high-school biology courses. And if the unbiased treatment of Paley's argument is to be maintained in the public schools, then philosophers will insist that it be balanced with something like David Hume's "Dialogue on Natural Religion."

The issue is further complicated when Johnson writes, "Science always has to fight the prevalent bias of the age if it is to be free to follow the evidence where it leads. In the past, geology had to free itself from religious bias so that it could consider possibilities like an old Earth or the occurrence of ice ages rather than a worldwide flood. That job was accomplished long ago, and now scientific thought is restricted by naturalistic bias" (emphasis added). Comments such as this, repudiating the ten-thousand-year-old Earth and the flood geology of the Institute for Creation Research (ICR), have led scholars such as Mark Noll and Alvin Plantinga to speak of Johnson as a more reasonable critic of evolution than his young-Earth predecessors. But to say that the refutation of young-Earth creationism was accomplished long ago is itself problematic. Does Johnson simply mean to say that there is no credible scientific evidence in favor of a young Earth? Or does he mean that young-Earth creationists are as nonexistent as flat-earthers?

Either interpretation causes difficulties for Johnson. To say that almost no one believes in a young Earth is simply false. According to a 1991 Gallup poll, 47 percent of Americans believe that God made man -- as man is now -- in a single act of creation, and within the last ten thousand years.4 And, of course, this is the position taken by the ICR.

The other interpretation, however, causes even greater difficulties for Johnson's criticism of the Edwards decision. He writes, "If a high-school curriculum incorporates the subject of biological origins, and if supernatural creation is a rational alternative to naturalistic evolution within that subject, then it is bad educational policy as well as viewpoint discrimination to try to keep students ignorant of an alternative that may be true. Though he is certainly no Thomist, Hilary Putnam makes this point with simple elegance. We all understand perfectly well what it means to say that the cause of the pressure cooker exploding was a stuck valve. Now, from a purely technical standpoint, we could say that the reason the pressure cooker exploded was the absence of randomly placed holes in its lid. The only reason for preferring the stuck-valve explanation is that pressure cookers by design are made with a single hole in the lid controlled by a valve. Had pressure-cooker makers not intended there to be a single hole in the lid, we would not identify a stuck valve as the cause of the explosion. A purely "scientific" explanation begs the question, because, as Putnam concludes, the "notion of things 'causing' other things is not a notion which is simply handed to us by physics."12

The same problem arises when one tries to give a purely "scientific" explanation of any biological organism without invoking intentional terms. It is impossible to say what a heart is, much less what it does, without specifying what a heart is for. Organisms conceptually must be intentionally ordered such that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. A heart that serves no function is no heart!

The ultimate failure of biological reductionism is that it assumes the whole is nothing more than the sum of its parts. But as Aristotle noted a long time ago, this is a fallacy of composition. Music is composed of acoustical disturbances, but it is not merely acoustical disturbances; written words are composed of ink lines on paper, but they are not merely ink lines on paper.

When doing biology, Aristotle himself made this point absolutely clear. Asking whether a philosopher's explanation of animal behavior in terms of efficient causes or an explanation in terms of intentional causes (or final causes) is to be preferred, he concluded, "Is it not rather the one who combines both in a single formula?"13

Darwin's response to Asa Gray's theistic understanding of evolution is instructive here. Darwin well understood that the issue -- Is the universe the result of chance or design? -- is one of philosophy, not science. Did God ordain, Darwin asked, "that the crop and tail-feathers of the pigeon should vary in order that the fancier might make his grotesque pouter and fantail breeds? Did he cause the frame and mental qualities of the dog to vary in order that a breed might be formed of indomitable ferocity, with jaws fitted to pin down the bull for man's brutal sport?" Surely no one could admit divine providence in these matters! Darwin concluded, then, by parity of reasoning, that "no shadow of reason can be assigned for the belief that variations, alike in nature and the result of the same general laws, which have been the groundwork through natural selection of the formation of the most perfectly adapted animals in the world, man included, were intentionally and specially guided."14 Darwin's objection to Gray is not that he is importing illicit matters of faith into science; rather, it is that Gray's theistic evolution creates an insuperable philosophical problem: What kind of God would permit so much evil?

Once again, our analysis of evolution leads to a perennial philosophical issue, exactly as Thomistic philosophers have long been saying it must. Christians can thus approach the purely biological evidence with the calm assurance that wherever it leads, the really difficult philosophical issues will remain the same, and the standard philosophical defenses of the faith that have served Christians well since the time of Augustine will continue to serve us well in the future.

Phillip Johnson responds:

I see no reason to complain about a review that pairs me with Richard Dawkins as setting the boundaries of the debate over evolution and creation, regardless of what intermediate position the reviewer personally favors. So, with appreciation for the attention, I will respond only on one important point.

The question whether Darwinism fits the scientific evidence is prior to the question of whether Christianity can or should be reconciled with Darwinism. Although he relegates the prior question to an endnote, Mr. Machuga actually agrees with me that Darwinism does not explain "biogenesis" (origin of genetic information), but only "diversification of existing species."

Although this distinction leaves open the question of exactly where the line between origin and diversification is to be drawn, it acknowledges that there are scientific as well as philosophical defects in Dawkins's Darwinian argument for atheism. I urge theists (and atheists too, for that matter) not to overlook the scientific objections to the more expansive Darwinian claims in their determination to pursue a philosophical objective -- whether that objective be to further materialism, or to show that Thomistic philosophy can incorporate just about any scientific theory about material causes.

Dawkins needs a scientific theory of the origin of life if his assumption -- that science will refute theism in a way that philosophy has not -- is to remain even plausible. But philosophical needs are nothing more than wishes in science!

Birds Pointed Him To the Creator

Andrew Jackson Grayson was caught drawing birds instead of doing his lessons, so his schoolmaster walloped him over the head. Young Grayson in turn broke his slate over the schoolmaster's head and was forbidden by his father to draw birds again. He obeyed for 20 years. In 1853, at the age of 35, he resumed drawing. He wanted to study and paint all the birds of the Pacific coast and publish them in a grand portfolio. So he began to collect and paint all the birds with which he came into contact as he moved from St. Louis to the West Coast, where he died from yellow fever in 1869 without having seen his paintings published.

So what sustained this illustrator who did not receive recognition while he was alive? Grayson had commented that, when his spirits became darkest, “Something comes in like a bird with glad tidings whose melody often... has given me a greater love for my creator whose works shine forth in all things... so beautiful and mysterious.”

Who Can Fix Us?

In the early days of the automobile a man’s Model-T Ford stalled in the middle of the road. He couldn’t get it started no matter how hard he cranked nor how much he tried to advance the spark or adjust things under the hood.

Just then a chauffeured limousine pulled up behind him, and a wiry, energetic man stepped out from the back seat and offered his assistance. After tinkering for a few moments the stranger said, “Now try it!”

Immediately the engine leaped to life. The well-dressed individual then identified himself as Henry Ford. “I designed and built these cars,” he said, “so I know what to do when something goes wrong.”

He Can Make Us What We Should Be

John 1:42

When Jesus decided to change Peter’s name in John 1:42, it demonstrated how Jesus looks at men. He does not only see what a man is; he also sees what a man can become. He sees not only the actualities in a man; he also sees the possibilities. Jesus looked at Peter and saw in him not only a Galilaean fisherman but one who had it in him to become the rock on which his church would be built. Jesus sees us not only as we are, but as we can be; and he says: “Give your life to me, and I will make you what you have it in you to be.”

At a 1981 symposium, Sir Fred Hoyle said: "The chance that

higher life forms might have emerged in this way (through

evolutionary processes) is comparable with the chance that a

tornado sweeping through a junkyard might assemble a Boeing 747

from the materials therein." Hoyle further said that "he was

at a loss to understand" the compulsion of evolutionary

biologists "to deny what seems to me to be obvious (i.e., that

MAKING A MONKEY OUT OF MAN Many people believe that Darwin's theory of evolution is a scientific fact. After all, it is often portrayed as such in books, television, motion pictures, and frequently, in our schools. A large portion of the scientific community has provided alleged "evidence" to support this view. Is it any wonder then that many, sometimes even Christians, are confused about the origin of mankind? Will science and religion always conflict? Or is there a reason behind this apparent division? When Darwin's THE ORIGIN of SPECIES was first published in 1859, his hypothesis that man evolved from lower life forms was met with widespread criticism. It was only toward the end of Darwin's life that this novel idea was given serious thought, and even then, scores of prominent biologists rejected the theory altogether. Darwin himself recognized the theory's limitations and concluded that life may have been "originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one." When considering the awesome complexity of the eye, Darwin wrote: "To suppose that the eye... could have been formed by [evolution], seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree." If evolution occurred, surely there would be extensive evidence of a gradual transition (as Darwin had predicted) in the form of fossils and bones. This is not the case. As a matter of fact, up until fairly recently, such so-called "missing links" (transitional stages between primates and humans) as "Nebraska Man," "Java Man," and "Peking Man" which were said to be proof of man's evolution, were later exposed to be frauds. The most recent fakery, "Piltdown Man," was purposely constructed using bones from a human and ape, then aging them using iron and manganese stains, in an attempt to strengthen a weak theory. Ironically, such startling revelations are rarely discussed. When closely examined, evolution contradicts several scientific laws. One of these laws is called "The Second Law of Thermodynamics," and another, "biogenesis." Interestingly, the law of biogenesis also confirms the law God set forth in the book of Genesis (which means, beginnings): Living things reproduce only "according to their own kind." In simple terms, this means that living creatures may breed within their specific class or family, but they cannot multiply outside of these grouPs. There can be great variety within a particular class/family, but the genetic code within each stops each from moving outside of its "kind." Scientists have been testing this law for decades, and have yet to "create" a new species. While Darwin's idea of "survival of the fittest" demonstrates a species natural adaptive abilities (the ability to change color, lose a tail or toe, etc.) this merely explains how a species SURVIVES, not how it ARRIVES. This is why Darwinism remains merely a THEORY, not a FACT or LAW. With all it's flaws, why then has evolution been so widely accepted? Those who have accepted Darwin's theory are many. Yet, there remains a significant minority of prominent scientists who reject this unproven theory. Respected Institutions such as he Institute for Creation Research, the Creation Science Institute, and others, provide teaching materials which scientifically support the creation of man and the earth and expose the flaws in evolutionary thinking. The most significant reason for believing in evolution is lack of faith in God. Without belief in the one true God, and trust in His word, man is left to his own devices -- to second-guess and fall prey to the one who is a deceiver. And this enemy will do all he can to trick us out of our eternal reward... even if it means making a monkey out of us. "In whom the god of this world (Satan) hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them." Earthquakes & Height - Seasonal Variations

In the past five years, earthquakes in California and neighboring states have shown a seasonal pattern, say researchers with the Carnegie Institute in Washington, D.C. The predominantly tiny quakes occur most frequently in September and least often in April. Pressure seems to be the controlling factor, say Shang Xing Gao and Paul Silver. In summer, the weight of the atmosphere is less. "This reduces the friction on rocks, so earthquakes can occur more easily," Mr. Gao says. A man's height is influenced by the month he was born, with April babies getting the best shot at becoming slightly taller grownups, according to Austrian researchers. They studied the heights of more than half a million 18-year-olds who were born from 1966 to 1975 and found a year-long cycle that peaked in April and bottomed out for October babies. The difference between these extremes was about half a centimetre. The scientists write in the journal Nature that they don't know how to explain their finding.

Adaptation

For decades, U.S. corn farmers have practiced a simple technique to control rootworms: They rotate their fields between soybeans and corn every year. The larvae love corn, but don't like the beans. Amazingly enough, the beetles have figured this out in several states and are laying their eggs in soybean fields, so next season when the corn is planted their larvae are ready and waiting. "This is a major shift in the behaviour of rootworms," said Illinois entomologist Joseph Spencer. If the adaptation spreads, it could threaten a crop that is a U.S. agricultural cornerstone. Imagine being outsmarted by a rootworm.

Theories of Origins

Imagine a family of mice who lived all their lives in a large piano. To them in their piano-world came the music of the instrument, filling all the dark spaces with sound and harmony. At first the mice were impressed by it. They drew comfort and wonder from the thought that there was Someone who made the music -- though invisible to them -- above, yet close to them. They loved to think of the Great Player whom they could not see. Then one day a daring mouse climbed up part of the piano and returned very thoughtful. He had found how the music was made. Wires were the secret; tightly stretched wires of graduated lengths which trembled and vibrated. They must revise all their old beliefs: none but the most conservative could any longer believe in the Unseen Player. Later, another explorer carried the explanation further. Hammers were now the secret, numbers of hammers dancing and leaping on the wires. This was a more complicated theory, but it all went to show that they lived in a purely mechanical and mathematical world. The Unseen Player came to be thought of as a myth. But the pianist continued to play.

God Is the Original Owner

[This popular internet mailing turns out to be an urban legend that's at least 50 years old; see http://www.snopes.com/humor/letters/landgrab.asp]

A New Orleans lawyer sought an F.H.A. loan for a client. He was told the loan would be granted if he could prove satisfactory title to a parcel of property being offered as collateral. The title to the property dated back to 1803, which took the lawyer three months to track down. After sending the information to the F.H.A., he received the following reply (actual letter):

"Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan

application, we note that the request is supported by an Abstract

of Title. While we compliment the able manner in which you have

prepared and presented the application, we must point out that

you have only cleared title to the proposed collateral property

back to 1803. Before final approval can be accorded, it will be

necessary to clear the title back to its origin."

Annoyed, the lawyer responded as follows (actual letter):

"Your letter regarding title in Case No. 189156 has been

received. I note that you wish to have title extended further

than the 194 years covered by the present application. I was

unaware that any educated person in this country, particularly

those working in the property area, would not know that Louisiana

was purchased by the U.S. from France in 1803, the year of origin

identified in our application. For the edification of uninformed

F.H.A. bureaucrats, the title to the land prior to U.S. ownership

was obtained from France, which had acquired it by Right of

Conquest from Spain.

The land came into possession of Spain by Right of Discovery made

in the year 1492 by a sea captain named Christopher Columbus, who

had been granted the privilege of seeking a new route to India by

the then reigning monarch, Isabella. The good queen, being a

pious woman and careful about titles, almost as much as the

F.H.A., took the precaution of securing the blessing of the Pope

before she sold her jewels to fund Columbus' expedition.

Now the Pope, as I'm sure you know, is the emissary of Jesus

Christ, The Son of God. And God, it is commonly accepted,

created this world. Therefore, I believe it is safe to presume

that He also made that part of the World called Louisiana. He,

therefore, would be the owner of origin. I hope to [blazes] you

find His original claim to be satisfactory."

Now, May we have our [darn] loan?"

Who Owns the Clay?

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Do you believe that? Careful, belief is a powerful thing, especially concerning such profound matters as God's existence. True belief or true disbelief in such a proposition will radically shape your view of the world, so proceed with caution. In other words, banish blitheness.

Our fundamental beliefs about the world are not always as transparent to us as we might think. For example, we might fancy ourselves avowed atheists, but in truth, we live and think as if the world were created and sustained by a personal God. Or we might conceive ourselves God-fearing folk who wouldn't dare question the Creator's existence, yet live and think about the world as if we were atheists.

In both cases confessed belief contradicts what is truly believed, that is, what is actually lived out in thoughts and actions. This is a difficult problem for all, for our thought life is influenced and determined by factors we often don't realize are influencing and determining us. Socrates attempted to combat this self-ignorance by advising to first, “Know thyself.”

I propose a test for knowing our self on this matter of the Creator: a test of true belief for those who confess to believe in the Creator. If you do believe, ask yourself: “What is my body? Who owns my body? Am I accountable to anyone for what I do with my body?”

If you believe in the Creator and therefore in creation, then you must admit that, for you, your body is the most intimate domain of creation. So how you think about your body reflects how you think about creation. Today, many voices tell us that our bodies are our own, the region where our will reigns supreme, where we are in control; and this control, they say, is a sacred right. Such beliefs permeate our society and shape how we treat our bodies. From plastic surgery to fast food, our bodies are the clay that our will molds, and don't try to tell us otherwise.

Such notions are in direct contradiction to belief in the Creator. So if you believe in one, heed my words. Your Creator created your body, breathed His breathe into it, fashioned it from clay; so you are not its sole monarch. Yes, God gave us a will to choose, but He did this so that we might bring our bodies under his Lordship, His creatorship.

So ask yourself, “Who shapes my clay?” The benevolent potter desires too.

According To Hoyle: Worldview and the Big Bang

The Big Bang theory says the universe had one beginning. As an atheist, Sir Fred Hoyle preferred to believe otherwise, and so he resisted the evidence all of his life. He died last week at age eighty-six.

Instead of one big bang, Hoyle postulated a series of "little pops." His "Steady State" theory included "continuous creation." Matter always existed, he said, and as it expands from the center of the universe, new matter is continually created to fill the void.

The Big Bang and Hoyle's Steady State were mere abstractions, unable to be tested. Then, in 1964, Drs. Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson of Bell Labs encountered continuous static on certain microwave frequencies. Rotating their antenna in a vain attempt to remove the noise, they realized it was coming from all directions -- permeating the universe. Physicists hailed this as the first observational evidence of the Big Bang known as "cosmic background radiation" or "the radio echo of creation."

Penzias saw the philosophical significance in his discovery. "... [T]he best data we have," he said, "are exactly what I would have predicted, had I had nothing to go on but the five books of Moses, the Psalms, the Bible as a whole.... [T]he creation of the universe is supported by all the observable data astronomy has produced so far."

Even as an atheist, Hoyle recognized an amazing complexity and precision in the universe. In his words, "A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a superintellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as with chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature. The numbers one calculates from the facts seem so overwhelming as to put this conclusion almost beyond question."

In other words, the things that exist in the universe are so complex and brilliantly made, that they look as if an Intelligent Designer fine-tuned them. Mao Zedong, by the way, recognized this as well -- which is why he would never allow the Big Bang theory to be taught in China.

Today, advocates of the Big Bang think that their theory is a substitute for God. But it's just the opposite. Hoyle rejected the Big Bang in spite of the evidence because he knew that the Big Bang pointed irresistibly to the existence of God.

Science historian Frederic B. Burnham observed that scientists consider the idea that God created the universe, "a more respectable hypothesis today than at any time in the last hundred years." Dr. Geoffrey Burbridge, of the University of California at San Diego, complains that many astronomers are rushing off to join what he calls "the First Church of Christ of the Big Bang." That's a cynic's way of acknowledging that many astronomers are being forced by their data, to recognize the existence of a Creator-God.

Whether God created the universe through the Big Bang or some other way, the one who did the creating demonstrated an amazing amount of power and wisdom as he caused the formation of everything that has been made!

As we read the obituaries about Sir Fred Hoyle, the man who named the Big Bang, we might ask our skeptical neighbors: If there was a Big Bang, isn't it reasonable to recognize what Hoyle did -- that there behind it a Big Brain. And might that not be the God of the Bible and of all creation?

Science Is Not Amazing Enough

Job 40

Scientific discovery amazes us with its facts:

1. It tells us the seven seas contain approximately 340 quintillion gallons of water;

2. It reveals the "known" universe stretches for more than 30 billion light years or 200 sextillion miles (and it continues to grow);

3. It says the earth weighs approximately six sextillion metric tons (and is getting heavier every day);

4. And it informs us there are more than 100 billion galaxies, each with about 100 billion stars.

While spiritual discovery amazes us still further:

1. That "[God] has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand";

2. "And marked off the heavens by [His hand's] span" [v. 12] as well as,

3. That "the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales; behold, He lifts up the islands [i.e., the continents] like fine dust." [v. 15]

4. And finally that we should "Lift up [our] eyes on high, and see who has created these stars, the One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; by the greatness of His might and the strength of His power not one of them is missing." [v. 26]

A Radical Plastic Surgeon Wants To Give You Wings

"Plastic surgery changes the soul." - Joe Rosen

Joe Rosen is a world-famous plastic surgeon, and an odd man. His specialty doesn't get much respect but in 2000 more than 1.3 million people had cosmetic surgery by certified surgeons, an increase of 227 percent since 1992 (these numbers do not include medically necessary or reconstructive surgeries.) The number of men receiving nose jobs has increased 141 percent since 1997. These figures alone point to the tremendous popularity and increasing acceptance of body alteration, and suggest that the slippery slope from something as bizarre as eyelid tucks to something more bizarre, like wings, may be shorter than we think.

Human wings is precisely what Rosen wants to create. He has already been asked to turn a man into a lizard. He says, "I don't have any problem with altering the human form. We do it all the time. It is only our Judeo-Christian conservatism that makes us think this is wrong. Who doesn't try to send their children to the best schools, in the hopes of altering them? Who objects to a Palm Pilot, a thing we clasp to our bodies, with which we receive rapid electronic signals? Who doesn't surround themselves with a metal shell and travel at death-defying speeds? We have always altered ourselves, for beauty or for power, and so long as we are not causing harm what makes us think we should stop? ... Why do we only value the average? Why are plastic surgeons dedicated only to restoring our current notions of the conventional, as opposed to letting people explore, if they want, what the possibilities are? ... Human flesh is infinitely malleable. People say cosmetic surgery is frivolous - boobs and noses. But it's so much more than that! The body is a conduit for the soul, at least historically speaking. When you change what you look like, you change who you are."

Socialite Jocelyne Wildenstein has dedicated much of her life to turning herself into a cat, via plastic surgery. She has had her lips enlarged and her face pulled back at the eyes to simulate a feline appearance. Is she a freak or the cutting edge of the future?

Carl Elliott, a bioethicist and associate professor at the University of Minnesota, recently wrote in THE ATLANTIC about a strange new "trend" of perfectly healthy folks who desire nothing more than to have a limb amputated, and about the British doctor who has undertaken this surgery, believing that if he doesn't amputate the patients will do it themselves, which could lead to gangrene. Elliott wonders whether amputation obsession will morph into another psychiatric diagnosis, whether, like hysteria, it will "catch on." The metaphor of contagion is an interesting one. Multiple-personality disorder "caught on"; hysteria caught on. Why then might not an unquenchable desire for wings or fins catch on, too?

Lauren Slater tries to ascertain clearly, logically, what so bothers people about Rosen's ideas. At first glance, it might seem fairly obvious. For crying out loud, wings. That's playing God. We should not play God. We should not reach for the stars. Myth after myth has shown us the dangers of doing so - Icarus, the Tower of Babel; absolute power corrupts absolutely. Bill Joy, chief scientist at Sun Microsystems, says, as our technological capabilities expand, "a sequence of small, individually sensible advances leads to an accumulation of great power, and concomitantly, great danger." Rosen's response to this: "So are we supposed to stop advancing? And who says it's bad to play God? We already alter the course of God's 'will' in hundreds of ways. When we use antibiotics to combat the flu, when we figure out a way to wipe smallpox off the very face of the earth, surely we're altering the natural course of things. Who says the natural course of things is even right? Maybe God isn't good."

Another objection has to do with the idea of proteanism. Proteus, a minor mythological figure, could shape-shift at will, being alternately a tiger, a lizard, a fire, a flood. Robert Lifton has explored how Proteus has become a symbol for human beings in our time. Lacking traditions, supportive institutions, a set of historically rooted symbols, we have lost any sense of coherence and connection. Today it is not uncommon for a human being to shift belief systems several times in a lifetime, and with relatively little psychological discomfort. We move on. We remarry. Our protean abilities clearly have their upsides. We are flexible and creative. But the downside is, there is no psychic stability, no substantive self, nothing really meaty and authentic. We sense this about ourselves. We know we are superficial, all breadth and no depth. Rosen's work embodies this tendency, literally. He desires to make incarnate the identity diffusion so common to our culture. Rosen is in our face making us face up to the fact that the inner and outer connections have crumbled. In our ability to be everything, are we also nothing?

Over and over again, from the Middle Ages on, when the theologian Pico wrote, in a direct and influential challenge to the Platonic idea of essential forms - "We have given you, Adam, no visage proper to yourself, nor endowment properly your own ... trace for yourself the lineaments of your own nature ... in order that you, as the free and proud shaper of your own being, fashion yourself in the form you may prefer.... [W]ho then will not look with awe upon this our chameleon..." - over and over, since those words at least, we as human beings have fretted about the question of whether there is anything fixed at our core, any set of unalterable traits that make us who we were and are and always will be.

Lifton writes, "Until relatively recently, no more than a single major ideological shift was likely to occur in a lifetime, and that one would be long remembered for its conflict and soul searching. But today it is not unusual for several such shifts to take place within a year or even a month, whether in the realm of politics, religion, aesthetic values, personal relationships. ... Quite rare is the man or woman who has gone through life holding firmly to a single ideological vision. More usual is a tendency toward ideological fragments, bits and pieces of belief systems that allow for shifts, revisions, and recombination."

What Lifton has observed in the psyche Rosen wants to make manifest in the body. When Slater asked Rosen, "So, do you believe we are just in essence protean, that there is nothing fundamental, or core, to being human?" He said, "Lauren, I am a scientist. My original interests were in nerves. The answer to your question may lie in how our nervous systems operate." Human beings have limb maps in their brains. When a person loses a limb - say, the right arm - this portion of the neural map fades away. Similarly, when we gain a limb, the brain almost immediately senses it and goes about hooking it up via neural representation. Rosen explains, "If I were to attach a third thumb, your brain would map it. Our bodies change our brains, and our brains are infinitely moldable. If I were to give you wings, you would develop, literally, a winged brain." Plastic surgery changes the soul. To the extent that we believe our souls are part of our brains, Rosen is right.

Slater once read that a fetus does not scar. Fetal skin repairs itself seamlessly, evidence of damage sinking back into blackness. Plastic surgery, for all its incredible advances, has not yet been able to figure out how to replicate this mysterious fetal ability in the full-born human. Plastic surgery can give us wings and maybe even let us sing like loons, but it cannot stop scarring. This is oddly comforting to her.

Who Owns the World?

World ownership, as Frederick F. Shannon observes, is a matter of spiritual capacity. The true owner of the world is the soul capable of appreciating it. Individual response to the eternal love and wisdom is owning it.

As an illustration, consider a magnificent organ. Who owns it - the person who made it or the one who paid for it? The organist himself? In reality the person who holds an indisputable title-deed to that organ is the man most capable of enjoying the music.

As Shannon says, "God leases the universe to all who can pay for it by the invisible coin of appreciation. Deity hangs a sign in the window of every star, on the leaf of every tree, on the face of every flower, on the peaks of history, on the souls of immortal men and women - and that sign reads: 'For Rent!' The only rental fee is the capacity to enjoy."

A Doctor's Testimony

Here is the testimony of a medical doctor: "In an anatomy room, a dead body meant nothing to me. I could not visualize the man or woman it might have been. Life left few records on the immobile face. For weeks I worked, and each day the wonder grew. Then one day I was working on an arm and hand, studying the perfect mechanical arrangements of the muscles and tendons, how the sheaths of certain muscles are split to let tendons of other muscles through, so that the hand may be delicate, small and yet powerful. I was all alone in the laboratory when the overwhelming belief came: a thing like this is not just chance but a part of a plan, a plan so big that only God could have conceived it. Religion had been to me a matter of form, a thing without conviction, but now everything was an evidence of God-the tendons of the hand, the patterns of the little butterfly's wings-all are a part of God's wonderful design."

The Wonderful Recreation

John Ruskin was walking along the streets of London one rainy day when he noticed the great quantities of mud at his feet. The thought occurred to him that it would be interesting to have the mud analyzed to find out exactly what inorganic elements were in it. This was accordingly done, and it was found that London mud consisted of sand, clay, soot, and water. He was struck by the fact that these are the very substances from which our precious jewels and gems are formed.

>From the sand come the onyx, agate, beryl, jasper, amethyst; from the clay come the sapphire, ruby, emerald, topaz; and from the soot, the diamond. London mud composed of precious jewels! Man cannot transform the mud into those glittering points of light, but God transforms and recreates the mud-poor, sinful, wayward humanity-into redeemed souls who sing a new song and carry with them glad tidings of great joy!

Who Made You?

"Who made you?" someone once asked a little girl. She replied, "God made me that much," indicating with her two hands the ordinary size of a newborn infant, "and I growed the rest myself." The little girl said this in her simplicity. Profound thinking must surely lead us to the same conclusion-that God made us for He made all things. But we may be tempted to think that we have done a great deal ourselves, not acknowledging even God's providential care.

Not Mere Chance

To think is to grow in awareness. Think as you look at a flower, a sunset or gaze at the starry sky. Someone has said that the unbelieving astronomer is mad. "What do you see?" a friend asked a famous botanist who was scrutinizing a flower. "I see God," was the reverent answer. A Scottish doctor wrote with his finger in the garden soil the letters of his little son's name, sowed cress in the furrows, and smoothed the ground. Ten days later, his son ran to him in astonishment and said that his name was growing in the garden and insisted on his father seeing it. "Is it not a mere chance?" asked the father. "No, someone must have arranged it that way." "Look at yourself," said the doctor. "Consider your hands, finger, legs, feet; did you come here by chance?" "No, something must have made me." "And who is that something?" As he did not know, the father told him the name of the great God who had made him and all the world. He never forgot that lesson.

In the Beginning Were the Particles: the Unacknowledged Creation Story

It's a classic story of creation -- one you may be familiar with, but probably have never heard spelled out quite this way. Here's how it goes:

"In the beginning was no intelligence or purpose; there were only

particles and impersonal laws of physics. These two things plus

chance did all the creating. Without them nothing was made that

has been made. The particles combined to become complex living

stuff through a process of evolution. Primitive humans, not

having science to tell them what had happened, dreamed up a

Creator they called God."

As Wilberforce Forum Board of Reference member Phillip Johnson writes in his new book THE RIGHT QUESTIONS, this is the "creation story" of evolutionary naturalism. And once we understand that -- really what they're saying -- we will have the enforcers of Darwinism on the run.

As Johnson explains, there is "an unacknowledged creation story" at the root of all secular learning which is the precise opposite of the biblical one. But don't expect to hear it told forthrightly at Harvard or Berkeley or anywhere else. To state its elements this explicitly would be to reveal that it is merely a story. "A foundational story," Johnson writes, "is much more powerful when it is pervasively assumed." If its elements, you see, are never evaluated, it appears to be an unavoidable implication of reason itself.

The secular creation story originated with Charles Darwin, whose evolutionary theories appeared to make God unnecessary as Creator. Religious belief, intellectuals assumed, would die out as soon as people became better educated.

A modern evangelist for the secular creation story is Harvard geneticist Richard Lewontin. The primary job for science educators, Lewontin maintains, is to get the public "to reject irrational and supernatural explanations of the world ... and to accept a social and intellectual apparatus, science, as the only begetter of truth." At least he's honest about what evolutionists are up to.

Today, Johnson writes, the grip of materialism has become so strong, and respect for traditional Christianity so weak, that even when people become dissatisfied with materialistic explanations for life, they tend to turn to an unbiblical compromise, like process theology, in which God evolves with the world.

And unfortunately Christians sometimes tend to argue just over scientific facts. Now we should do that, but you can't be trapped into arguing about the details when you should be focusing at the same time on the fundamental assumptions that generate the evolutionary story.

"To put it simply," Johnson writes, "Christians have been losing because they have not found the best way to state the question. They do battle on ground that favors the agnostics." We must understand that the debate is not a clash between science and religion, or between reason and faith. It is a clash between two religions -- Christianity and naturalism -- and two definitions of science -- evolution and intelligent design.

When we talk with our children and our neighbors, we must focus on the fundamental assumptions that generate the evolutionary story. We must make sure they understand that the real debate is between two creation narratives: between one that says, "In the beginning were the particles," and one that says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God; all things were made through Him ... "

God Is In All Things

Psalms 9:1

A fellow said that he wanted to be a barber, but he just couldn’t cut it. Then he tried working in a car muffler factory, but that was too exhausting. I wonder if he ever found something that suited him — like being a tailor, but that is a so-so job. Poor guy!

Yesterday afternoon our electricity went off. Everything we thought of doing required electricity. Isn’t it amazing how dependent we have become on Edison’s toy. Electricity is vital to most things we do, yet you never see it. You see the results of it, but you never see it. It is sort of like faith in God — we never see Him, but we see the results of His action.

In the organ business there is an ongoing battle between pipe and electronic. So, which did God create first — wind or electrons? Is one inferior because it took man longer to harness God’s electrons than it did to harness God’s wind? We must remember that every new device of man is only finding a new way of using something God created. Man is designing some amazing devices these days, but he is only discovering how to use some of the microscopic items God gave us. We think man is incredibly sharp, but our minds are puny compared to the wisdom of our God.

We serve an awesome God. Don’t take Him and His creation for granted. The next time your electric goes off, think of all the benefits we have because God created myriads of tools for man to use. Psalm 9:1–2 say (NIV),

“I will praise you, O Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonders. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.”

The universal Providence — By Him all things consist. Every object in nature is impressed with His footprints, and each new day repeats the wonders of creation. Where In the World Is God?

Tired of hearing all those “scientific” arguments about how the universe just accidentally “happened” and how we all randomly evolved from pond slime? Don’t you ever wonder, Where’s God in all this, anyway?

We’ve been thinking about it too. That’s why we took our questions to Fred Heeren, a science writer who believes it’s not a battle between God and science, but a discovery of God in science.

Campus Life: Can we really find God in science?

Fred Heeren: Science can’t “observe” God. But we can observe a universe that yields evidence of one of two things: It’s either God’s handiwork, or it got here by accident, without a creator. The evidence has to point one way or the other. And scientific discoveries of this century clearly show that our universe is no accident, that there is an intelligent designer behind it all.

What many non-Christians believe today is based on 19th-century science, which said our universe is self-sustaining and eternal-implying that it was not created. But modern science tells us the opposite-that our universe cannot sustain itself, that it’s dependent on something outside of itself, and that our universe had a beginning, as the Bible says.

C-L: How else does science point to a creator?

Fred Heeren: Twentieth-century science has shown us that our universe and nature’s laws are very finely tuned, and if that tuning were “off” even a tiny bit, life as we know it would not exist. For example, if the gravitational constant throughout the universe was just tweaked to be slightly stronger or weaker, we’d have no stars, no water, no life.

C-L: Do most scientists believe the universe had a beginning?

Fred Heeren: At the beginning of the 20th century, the answer would have been no. But now, about 98 percent of them do. All of today’s evidence shows that the universe is constantly expanding. And if it’s expanding, it must have had a beginning.

Even the rate of expansion points to God. The rate is so perfectly fine-tuned that if it was changed at the beginning by one part in 10 to the 60th power-that’s a one with 60 zeros after it — the universe would either be in chaos today or it wouldn’t exist. If it was expanding that tiny fraction faster, matter couldn’t hold together and we’d have no stars and galaxies. If it was expanding that tiny bit slower, it would have collapsed long ago.

C-L: Where does the Bible fit into this picture?

Fred Heeren: Christians believe truth is revealed through God’s Word and through his works (see Romans 1:20). In the physical world, God’s Word gives us part of the picture, and science gives us another part.

For instance, the Bible says God created the heavens, but it doesn’t say specifically how galaxies were formed. But science does tell us something about galaxy formation, and we can-and should-learn from that.

This is where we get into the difference between “proof” and “evidence.” Science alone can’t prove how galaxies form, because we weren’t there when it happened. But we’re gathering a lot of evidence by observing galaxies. When we look through a telescope at a distant galaxy, we’re actually looking back in time. Light travels about 186,000 miles per second. So, if something is 186,000 miles away, we’re seeing it as it appeared one second ago. We see the sun as it appeared eight minutes ago, the star Alpha Centauri as it appeared 4.3 years ago, and the Andromeda galaxy as it appeared 2.3 million years ago.

And farther away than that, we can see galaxies in their “infant” stages — as they actually appeared millions or billions of years ago. But even though we can actually see galaxies forming, we still can’t say for sure how-or why-they formed. That’s why we go back to God’s Word, where we find out it’s all done in a way that’s very good for us-so there could be stars, there could be energy and there could be life.

So, we often have the “why” questions answered in God’s Word, and the “how” questions answered in God’s works.

C-L: So, what’s all this mean for Christians?

Fred Heeren: I think it solidifies our faith. Science gives evidence for a creator, because the universe couldn’t have come from nowhere. And it gives evidence for a “grand designer” who cares about life-and therefore us-because the universe is so finely tuned, as I’ve already discussed.

When I was younger, I thought there were contradictions between the Bible and science. But as I studied science, I realized we do have a creator who’s outside the universe. And that revelation led me to the Bible, which in turn led me to Jesus Christ.

C-L: You mentioned what you thought were contradictions between the Bible and science. Like what?

Fred Heeren: The Bible says God created us. But in high school, I was taught that we were the result of naturalistic evolution. That’s a contradiction, and I had to resolve it.

There are two reasons why the theory of evolution is being questioned today. The first reason is the fossil record, and the second is the biological evidence.

The fossil record points to some type of creation, not to this idea that we’ve evolved all the way from pond scum. The fossil record shows the sudden appearance of a type of life, followed by a long period of stasis (meaning a certain type of animal didn’t change into another type), and finally extinction. There are no “descendants” and no “ancestors.”

Biological evidence also points to creation and intelligent design. I had been taught that species-including humans-evolved through mutation and natural selection (“survival of the fittest”). But biology doesn’t support that. Experiments prove there are limits to mutation, to how much any organism can change. For example, when fruit flies are exposed to radiation for thousands of generations, they get all kinds of genetic mutations-three and four pairs of wings, eyes in the wrong places, different sets of legs, all sorts of things. But they’re still fruit flies. So, the theory that we’ve evolved from something through a series of mutations just doesn’t work.

C-L: What do you mean by “intelligent design”?

Fred Heeren: When you see the fine-tuning I’ve talked about, whether in the laws of the universe or in biology, things that couldn’t have “just happened” by accident, you have to look for an explanation. And the only one that fits, from everything we’ve observed, is that there must be an intelligence behind it all.

It all boils down to something called “specified complexity.” Yes, that’s a big term, but it’s important to understand. And once you understand it, it’s easier to “show” your friends (and maybe your science teacher!) that our universe indeed has a creator.

Now, a definition of “specified complexity.” The word “specify” means to give clear directions. For instance, God didn’t just tell Noah to “build a big boat.” God “specified” exactly what kind of wood to use, how to treat that wood, how long to cut it, how many decks to build, and so on (Genesis 6:14-16). So, when something is “specified,” it’s been put together in a certain way, following the directions exactly.

“Complexity” means that something is “complex”-the opposite of “simple.” Alone, a single log is “simple.” But if you take 10,000 logs and drop them from the sky into a giant pile, you’ve got complexity. The pile, however, is not “specified”-there’s just a big mess that fell together without following any directions or forming any kind of pattern.

Now, take those same 10,000 logs and cut them up into different lengths and shapes, and then nail them all together in a certain way, following a set of detailed instructions. When you’re done, you’ll have a nice house. And not only that, but you’ll have “specified complexity” — something complex, but also something that followed “specific” directions.

Here’s another way of looking at it: If I dropped a million Scrabble letters from the sky, they’d form a “complex” mess on the ground-a lot going on, but no meaning. But if I could somehow “specify” that all those letters fall so that they form not only words, but an entire novel, well, you’d have “specified complexity”-something that gives information and meaning.

C-L: OK, now that I understand “specified complexity,” what’s it all mean?

Fred Heeren: We find many cases of “specified complexity” throughout the universe — things that can’t be explained merely by the forces of nature. When something produces information or meaning-like the million Scrabble letters forming a novel — there must be an intelligence behind it. You know it couldn’t have just happened by accident.

Our own human DNA is a great example of “specified complexity.” DNA includes codes that are so specified and complex, there’s no way they can be explained by just natural causes. The DNA codes act like human language. DNA has its own “alphabet” that it puts into words, sentences and punctuation, using its own grammatical rules. It actually has the ability to “communicate,” to “specify” information and meaning.

Here’s another way of looking at it: DNA is the “blueprint” of life. It “tells” proteins exactly how to develop into biological systems-a hummingbird’s wing, a dinosaur’s eyes, a tree’s roots, a human brain, anything that’s organic. DNA’s code is really quite an amazing language.

Now, if scientists received a message from outer space with that kind of specified, complex code, they wouldn’t hesitate to say that it came from an intelligent source. And not just any intelligence, but a super intelligence, because it’s specified things that scientists still don’t know how to do.

Well, we haven’t received any messages like this from outer space. But we have received it from things like the DNA sequence. So now we can tell our friends that scientists have discovered evidence of an extraterrestrial super intelligence-but it happens to belong to our own caring Creator.

C-L: If scientists believe in “intelligent design,” where do they think this intelligence comes from?

Fred Heeren: Well, those scientists won’t say it comes from an intelligent source — although Einstein came very close. He recognized the evidence for an intelligence behind nature’s laws. He thought of it as being the universe itself, and yet there’s no such thing as an “impersonal intelligence.” That’s a contradiction in terms.

So, Einstein went about as far as science can take you — believing in intelligent design. At that point, science can take you no further. To take that to a belief in God takes a leap of faith, but it’s not a blind leap. It’s a very reasonable leap.

C-L: Are there any respected scientists who believe in God?

Fred Heeren: Yes, many. For instance, Alan Sandage, one of today’s most famous astronomers, has a personal faith in Jesus Christ. He once told me, “We can’t understand the universe in any clear way without the supernatural.” For Sandage, the evidence of science led him inescapably to believe in a creator; that was as far as science would take him. But then he made the personal decision to trust Christ as his Savior, and this was a decision that involved his heart as well as his mind.

C-L: You certainly know a lot about science. How does that help you tell people about God?

Fred Heeren: Through my book and my magazine, Cosmic Pursuit, I want to reach people who are interested in the bigger questions behind science. I want to reach people with the good news of Jesus Christ, and my strategy is to get into the places where unbelievers get their information-like secular bookstores.

That should be a goal for all Christians-to get into the places where unbelievers get their information. I do TV and radio talk shows, as well as speeches on secular college campuses. Then there’s my magazine, books, video and a Web site. There are lots of ways to reach unbelievers.

But few Christians take advantage of these opportunities. I encourage everyone who wants to spread God’s good news to go to the places where our unbelieving friends are, and to help them hear the gospel in a new light.

We can use these scientific findings as a conversation starter, a jumping-off point to begin to raise the big questions that inevitably lead to our accountability before a perfect and caring Creator.

C-L: Any last thoughts?

Fred Heeren: Yes. The question we should be asking isn’t, “Where is God in science?” but, “Where isn’t God in science?” Where can you go to get away from him? How do you explain the way things are without God? His evidence is found everywhere we look.

Overlapping Territory: How Science Supports Theism

Allan Rex Sandage is considered the greatest observational cosmologist in the world. As former journalist Lee Strobel writes in his book THE CASE FOR A CREATOR, Sandage had “deciphered the secrets of the stars, plumbed the mysteries of quasars,” and quantified the expansion of the universe.

In 1985 Sandage took part in a conference about the origin of the universe. The panel was divided between scientists who believed in God and those who did not. Each side would vigorously defend its viewpoint.

Everybody knew which side Sandage would defend. Though ethnically Jewish, he was known to have been a virtual atheist since he was a child. But the audience was in for a shock. While discussing the Big Bang and its philosophical implications, Sandage announced that he had become a Christian — and that it was science that drove him to his beliefs.

The Big Bang, Sandage said, was a supernatural event that the realm of physics could not explain. The abrupt emergence of space, time, matter, and energy indicate the need for some sort of transcendent power.

“It was my science that drove me to the conclusion that the world is much more complicated than can be explained by science,” Sandage said later. “It was only through the supernatural that I can understand the mystery of existence.”

This outlook was shocking because it flew in the face of centuries of secular teachings about religion and science. Why do so many scientists — and some theologians — claim that there is a war between science and religion, or that we have to seal off science and religion in completely different realms? One scientist who did this was the late Stephen Jay Gould. He claimed that science and faith occupy different “magistera.” “The net of science covers the empirical universe,” Gould said, while “the net of religion extends over questions of moral meaning and value.” Gould called his theory NOMA, an acronym for “non-overlapping magisterial.”

Lee Strobel took this theory to geophysicist Stephen Meyer, who agreed that it was partially true. The problem with NOMA, he said, is that biblical religion makes very specific claims about historical events that Christians maintain happened in time and space. This means that Christianity “is going to intersect some of the factual claims of history and science. There's either going to be conflict or agreement.” The only way you can make NOMA work, Meyer says, is to water down Christianity, which is what Gould did. For example, according to the Bible, Jesus appeared to His disciple Thomas and showed him physical evidence, the holes in His hands; Gould dismissed this as nothing more than a morality tale.

But as Meyers argues, there is no need to water down biblical teachings — because scientists in every field are uncovering evidence that points to the existence of an intelligent designer. To learn more about this evidence, read Lee Strobel's great book THE CASE FOR A CREATOR.

Science and faith are not at war, as Allan Sandage discovered. Rather, as the Psalmist put it, “The heavens declare the glory of God” — and here on earth, more and more scientists are beginning to agree.

Putting God Out of A Jo?: the Case For a Creator

Job 38

In 1966, Lee Strobel was a 16-year-old who liked science. He liked it because it fit in with his logical way of looking at the world. He liked it for another reason, as well: Science — the way he was taught it — allowed him to dismiss God from his life.

In his new book, THE CASE FOR A CREATOR, Strobel describes the link between what he was taught in biology class and the breakdown of his religious faith. Sad to say, Strobel's biology teacher was aided and abetted by his church. In Sunday school, Strobel writes, “my 'why' questions weren't always welcomed.” Instead of answering them, his teachers told him to memorize another Bible verse.

Meanwhile, Strobel's trust in science “had been shaped by growing up in post-Sputnik America, where science and technology had been exalted as holding the keys to the survival of our country.” That trust became rock-solid when Strobel encountered the images of evolution.

The most powerful image involved the Stanley Miller experiment. In 1953, Miller, a graduate student at the University of Chicago, attempted to artificially create the building blocks of life. Miller reproduced what he believed was the atmosphere of the primitive earth. He then shot electric sparks through it to simulate lightning. The result? Amino acids.

Strobel says that when he learned of this experiment, “My mind flashed to the logical implication: If the origin of life can be explained solely through natural processes, then God was out of a job! After all, there was no need for a deity if living organisms could emerge by themselves out of the primordial soup and then develop ... into more and more complex creatures.”

Strobel was delighted to put God out of a job, because no God meant he could behave exactly as he wanted. And that's how things remained for quite a few years. And then, one day, an unexpected witness led Strobel to reconsider the possibility that God might exist, after all: Strobel's wife Leslie announced that she had become a Christian. Strobel was horrified. He could not understand how a rational person could believe such nonsense.

But over the next few months, Strobel began to notice a change in Leslie's values and character. He was determined to investigate this change — and go wherever the answers took him. His two-year research into the claims of Christianity led him to a powerful faith in Christ.

Strobel's story is a warning of why Christians need to teach their kids how to apply worldview thinking to every aspect of their lives. We can start by telling them that much of the so-called evidence for evolution is fraudulent or has been proven false, like the Miller experiment that so influenced Strobel. Strobel discovered all of this when he began searching for answers.

His latest book, THE CASE FOR A CREATOR, explains how new findings in physics, astronomy, and biochemistry support the notion that God created the heavens and the earth. I'll be talking about this book over the next few days on BreakPoint.

I hope you'll keep reading, because if we don't give our kids answers to their questions, somebody else will — somebody who may be intent on putting God out of a job.

The Mountains

Amos 4:13

Last week, my wife and I were blessed to spend the entire week in the Teton National Park. Special thanks go to our gracious friends, D & T for the wonderful gift we enjoyed. Without their loving generosity, we would probably have never been able to experience such a trip. It was our first week-long vacation ever, and it could not have possibly been more beautiful!

I took over a thousand photos while I was there, and only ran out time, not things to photograph. I took about a dozen photos of the Teton range from across the Snake River, stitched them together electronically and color corrected them to get the panorama you see below.

Today’s devotional is a bit out of the ordinary. I want you to enjoy the jaw-dropping beauty of the Teton peaks while meditating on some wonderful verses in Scripture (NKJV, emphasis mine) that speak of mountains. Did Darwin Believe In Intelligent Design?

The majority of Americans believe Darwinian evolution should be taught alongside Intelligent Design, while the education establishment adamantly believes Intelligent Design is religion rather than science, and must be banned from schools.

Interestingly, evolutionist Charles Darwin himself mentioned a creator in the final page of his book, “On the Origin of the Species.” Darwin wrote, “There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved.”

The Apologetic of Story

John 21:24

Gregory Wolfe, editor of IMAGE journal, tells a story about telling stories for his kids. He describes the memorable bedtimes when he attempts to concoct a series of original tales. “My kids are polite enough to raise their hands when they have some penetrating question to ask about plot, character, or setting,” he writes. “If I leave something out of the story, or commit the sin of inconsistency, these fierce critics won't let me proceed until I've revised the narrative. Oddly enough, they never attempt to take over the storytelling. They are convinced that I have the authority to tell the tale, but they insist that I live up to the complete story that they know exists somewhere inside me.”(1) Children seem to detest a deficient story.

There is no doubt that our sense of the guiding authority of story and storyteller often dramatically lessens as we move from childhood to adulthood. And yet, regardless of age, there remains something deeply troubling about a story without a point, or an author not to be trusted.

In an interview with SKEPTIC magazine, Richard Dawkins was asked if his view of the world was not similar to that of Shakespeare's Macbeth: namely, that life is but “A tale told by an idiot, filled with sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

“Yes,” Dawkins replied, “at a sort of cosmic level, it is. But what I want to guard against is people therefore getting nihilistic in their personal lives. I don't see any reason for that at all. You can have a very happy and fulfilled personal life even if you think that the universe at large is a tale told by an idiot.”(2)

His words attempt to remove the sting his philosophy imparts. And yet, it stings regardless - - both with callousness and confusion. If I am but a poor player fretting my hour upon the stage of a tale told by an idiot, what is a “fulfilling” personal life? There is no room in the naturalist's philosophy for intrinsic dignity, human worth, or human rights. There is no room for moral accountability, right or wrong, good or evil. There is no room for the layers of my love for my husband, the cry of my heart for justice, or the recognition on my conscience that I am often missing the mark. There is no room for my surprise at time's passing or my longing for something beyond what I am capable of fully reaching in this moment. This is not the story I know.

In the words of G.K. Chesterton, “I had always felt life first a story: and if there is a story there is a story-teller.”

Could it be that our relationship to stories, our first love of the tale beyond us and the author beside us, conveys a deep truth about our own cosmic tale? Are not the very philosophies we carry attempts to make sense of the grand story of which we find ourselves a part?

The first words of Genesis 1 boldly claim that we are not lost and wandering in a cosmic circle of time and chance. There is a story that emerges from the beginning, and we have a place within it. Similarly, the writer of Hebrews describes Jesus as the author and finisher of our faith, where ultimate significance is aptly defined as being written into the story of God. God's Word places us in the timeline of a coherent history, delivering us from the deceptions of the enemy, telling us who we are, and where we came from, what is wrong with us, how we are made whole, and where we are going. We are placed within a story of which we know and celebrate the outcome, even as we wait for it through time and trial. In Christ, history's outcome — its ultimate end — is revealed. Dark days may follow, but the ending is KNOWN. It is a story neither deficient, nor untrustworthy.

C.S. Lewis fittingly describes heaven at the end of his Chronicles of Narnia as a place where good things continually increase and life is an everlasting story in which “every chapter is better than the one before.” His compelling reflection has often reminded me of Christ's beloved disciple in the closing chapters of his testimony to the significance of Jesus Christ. Notes John, “If all of the acts of Christ were recorded, the world would not have enough room for all the books that would be written” (John 21:24-26). Like children, eyes widen at the thought. What a story to be a part of, a life to find touching your own.

What We Can Know About the Moment of Creation

Job 38:18

Physicist Stephen Hawking, author of "A Brief History of Time," was once invited to a cosmology conference at the Vatican. Hawking said he "didn't fancy the thought of being handed over to the Inquisition like Galileo," but he went. According to Hawking, Pope John Paul told the scientists, "It's OK to study the universe and where it began. But we should not inquire into the beginning itself becaues that was the moment of creation and the work of God." John Paul believed God chose how the universe began for reasons we could not understand. He also insisted that faith and science could coexist.

Hawking questions whether an almighty power is needed to create the universe. "Does it require a creator to decree how the universe began? Or is the initial state of the universe determined by a law of science?"

Lord of the Dance

I vividly remember what it was like as a child to have overwhelming questions running through my head about existence. Sometimes I would sit and think and try to get my head around why I existed at all, until my mind simply quit and went blank. Who am I? What is life? How did it begin? If life goes on after death, what is eternity? Surely even that must end? The one thing we cannot accept as children or rationalize as adults is that things just happen by themselves. In my family, like most others, lots of things happened inexplicably. Food went missing from the cupboards, rooms messed themselves up, fights were started by phantoms, dirty footprints appeared across the carpet on their own, and all sorts of things were broken by the invisible man! All of us when questioned by mom or dad usually denied responsibility. “I don't know! It wasn't me!”

Why did this reasoning never get us off the hook? Because people cannot accept that things happen by themselves -- something causes them to happen. That room did not get messy by itself; something or someone messed it up. This is a rule of common sense and common knowledge; all events must have a cause. No reasonable person would dispute that. This is the source of the persistent questioning of a child who asks why. If one asks why enough times, eventually you either get back to God or you simply have to assert something like, “It just is; that's all” or “Because I said so.” The latter response is rather unsatisfactory, and even reference back to God will often prompt the question, “But who made God?”

This fact is telling. What it shows is that our minds demand a principle philosophers call “efficient causality” or cause and effect. We all notice that some things cause other things to begin to be, to continue to be, or both. Every event must have a cause. We can say for example: I have just knocked over my cup of tea because my arm knocked it over, because my brain told my arm to move, because electrical impulses moved the muscles as I willed to move my arm, because that's how the body works. If we go on like that, we either get back to God or we resort to something irrational.

As we have said, our senses tell us that the universe is real and that our world is a system of events and changes. These events, like the spilling of a cup of tea, cannot cause themselves -- this would be absurd. Everything at this moment is caused to be by something other than itself. But what is causing them if everything at any given moment needs a cause? The only reasonable solution is that there must be a first cause that is uncaused, self-existent, independent, and eternal. A cause that is not dependent on anything else to be its cause. This must be God. He is not an effect of something else; instead, he is the ultimate cause of all other effects. God is not an event that occurs at a given time like everything else; he has always been and always will be.

The Bible begins with that very assertion: “In the beginning God.” It does not argue about it or seek to persuade the reader by clever argument that it is true. It is simply stated. And human consciousness nods its head to this fact -- God is! This is the very answer to the child's question, “Who made God?” For even a child knows that the gift of life came from someone and was passed to all from somewhere. This is a constant theme in the Bible. It tells us that people intuitively know they have been given the gift of life from the giver of life who is eternal.

The Lord of the dance, the one who gives life to and sustains everything, has placed in the human heart a sense of our own created-ness, of our own immortality. Despite the fact that we cannot understand or explain an infinite, self-existent God, a persistent awareness that He is the source of all life remains embedded in the very essence of what it means to be a human being. He is the great assertion, the only one who can truly say, “Because I said so.”

There is a story told of Alexander the Great. A general in the army, being a great favorite with him, was told to draw anything from the treasury that he wanted. The general accordingly presented a draft to Alexander’s treasurer. It was for such an enormous amount that the treasurer was astonished, and refused to allow it.

The general went rushing back to Alexander and told him what had happened. The emperor thereupon summoned his treasurer and said to him, “Didn’t I tell you to honor the draft of the general?”

“Yes,” replied the treasurer, “but do you understand its amount ?”

“Never mind what it is,” replied Alexander, “he honors me and my empire by making such a great draft.”

Three Objections

It goes by many different names. Some call it naturalism or scientism; others refer to it as materialism or modernism. Some don’t refer to it at all, believing that it is the presupposition of any rational person.

IT is the basic belief that we can only know what we can empirically observe; that is, the only valid explanation for any phenomenon is that which can be scientifically proven. Carl Sagan famously summed up the naturalist worldview by saying, “The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be.” The naturalist rejects supernatural explanations. The problems with this worldview are myriad, yet in spite of these it has become the default framework of knowledge in secular society. The following are just three of the problems that undermine naturalism’s credibility as a worldview.

First and foremost, naturalism is self-refuting. The naturalist claims to reject the metaphysical while at the same time ignoring the fact that naturalism is itself a metaphysical framework. As many have pointed out, naturalism (or scientism) cannot be scientifically proven. It is an un-provable philosophical assumption that guides experimentation; it is not itself the result of experimentation. It is logically impossible to prove via natural means that the supernatural does not exist. Of course, anyone is free to start from naturalist presuppositions, but they should realize that this is no less of a faith commitment than starting from a theist’s point of view.

Second, as Paul Copan has pointed out, the naturalist is guilty of what is known in logic as the “self-excepting fallacy.” That is, he does not hold his own beliefs to the same standard he expects of others. He explains away the religious beliefs of others as the product of their DNA and experience, suggesting that they are therefore unfounded. But he does not consider his own reasoning abilities untrustworthy even though, according to his own worldview, they are the product of chance plus matter plus time. The naturalist sees no need to defend his presuppositions, though this is precisely what he expects of others.

Finally, John Lennox has pointed out a more subtle error of naturalism. The naturalist worldview fails to account for the difference between MECHANISM and AGENCY. If the naturalist can determine the mechanical cause behind a phenomenon, he believes his work is done. But he has not considered the question of agency, that is, whoever or whatever set the mechanism in motion. Isaac Newton (a theist) didn’t make this confusion. As Lennox points out, Newton recognized gravity (the mechanism), but he glorified God (the agent responsible). The belief that evolution is the mechanism by which this universe arrived at its current state does nothing to resolve the question of what agent set that mechanism in motion. Although many scientists recognize the limited explanatory power of science, proponents of scientISM treat the natural world as if it were an agent rather than a mechanism.

I am curious to know how Dr. Sagan would have responded had someone asked him to prove his statement that the Cosmos is all that is, was, or will be, for there is no way to prove naturalism by naturalistic methods. Is it not reasonable that those who preach naturalism consider just what a heaping helping of faith their creeds require?

This Is the Day That the Lord Has Made

“This is the day that the Lord has made.” Have you ever heard that one before? It is a strange saying if you think about it. I know what it means to make a table or a necklace, but what does it mean to make a day? Have you ever made time? We say that colloquially, but have you ever truly fashioned a minute, or created an hour? As humans, we use the time we are given. We don't make it. So what could this strange saying mean?

Contemporary Cosmologists tell us that when the universe came into being that not just space and matter appeared, but so did time. I know this is a strange thought, that there was a point at which time began, but that is what the scientists tell us is true. Time, it appears, is not self-generating but depended on something to bring it into existence. I believe that this something is actually a someone, namely God. Before matter, before space, before time, God willed these things, and then spoke them into existence. If you don't buy that, you have to wrestle with the maxim ex nihilo, nihilo fit, out of nothing, nothing comes.

If you do agree with me, then this helps explain our strange saying. God, the creator, created time. And if He created time then His making this day doesn't seem strange at all.

Now I think it is safe to reason that if this is the day that the Lord has made then it is also true that this is the moment that the Lord has made. This moment is not just a time that will pass into the oblivion of the past, and it is not an ephemeral instant we can't grasp. This moment is the handiwork of God.

Does that make you a bit nervous? It does me. Why? Because when I make something I do so for a reason or a purpose. And this leads me to wonder why God made this moment and then gave it to me. What does He want me to do with this moment, this hour, this day?

I believe that Jesus told us; for I believe that He is the Son of God and so vouches for God's desires. With this moment God wants us to open ourselves to Him, know Him, and thus love Him. That is a lot for this moment. You might say it makes these seconds sacred. May all your seconds be so, for these are the seconds the Lord has made.

Worldviews are constantly in motion. New issues arise and new questions present themselves. In one sense, worldviews operate as idea factories, as primary ideas work themselves out into related ideas. The basic framework of convictions that lies at the heart of a worldview always works outward toward implications of those key convictions.

Keep that in mind when you read of developments in Switzerland. As previously reported, Switzerland amended its constitution to require that “the dignity of creation” must be taken into account “when handling animals, plants, and other organisms.” In order to meet this constitutional provision, the Swiss government commissioned the Swiss Federal Ethics Committee on Non-Human Biotechnology and asked that body to produce guidelines. The result was a report that is among the most radical ever adopted by any government. “The Dignity of Living Beings with Regard to Plants” is nothing less than clear evidence of what happens when the Christian worldview is completely eclipsed by secular thought.

At the onset, the Swiss committee admitted that it was operating on the basis of moral intuition. In essence, intuition is all the members had to go on -- which should have been sufficient warning in itself.

In the most important part of the report, the committee identified four alternative worldviews that would lead to very different conclusions. These are:

• THEOCENTRISM -- “The basis for this position is the idea of a God who is creator, and therefore the creative ground of all living organisms. What counts for its own sake is God. All organisms count because of their relationship to God.”

• RATIOCENTRISM -- “In this position the issue of whether beings count for their own sake depends on their (potential) capacity for reason and their capacity for abstract speech.”

• PATHOCENTRISM -- This position is based in the sentience of living organisms. They count morally for their own sake if they are sentient and are therefore able to experience something, in some way, as good or bad.”

• BIOCENTRISM -- “Living organisms should be considered morally for their own sake because they are alive.”

While these four alternative worldviews do not exhaust the possibilities, this outline is very helpful. Even more helpful is the fact that the committee reported on its own mixed commitments. Tellingly, not one member of the committee accepted the Theocentric worldview. The majority chose the biocentric worldview. That fact, taken alone, is sufficient to explain the report. The extension of “rights” to plants, confusing plants with personhood, is the direct implication of the biocentric worldview. If life, defined merely as biosis, is at the center of the worldview, then biosis must be the good that trumps all other goods.

Now, The Wall Street Journal reports that the guidelines set down by the committee are complicating life for scientists. “Unfortunately, we have to take it seriously,” said Beat Keller of the University of Zurich. He was referring to the mandate that scientists take account of a plant’s “dignity” before conducting any experiment.

As the paper reports:

Several years ago, when Christof Sautter, a botanist at

Switzerland’s Federal Institute of Technology, failed to get

permission to do a local field trial on transgenic wheat, he

moved the experiment to the U.S. He’s too embarrassed to mention

the new dignity rule to his American colleagues. “They’ll think

Swiss people are crazy,” he says.

Defenders of the law argue that it reflects a broader,

progressive effort to protect the sanctity of living things.

Last month, Switzerland granted new rights to all “social

animals.” Prospective dog owners must take a four-hour course on

pet care before they can buy a canine companion, while anglers

must learn to catch fish humanely. Fish can’t be kept in

aquariums that are transparent on all sides. The fish need some

shelter. Nor can goldfish be flushed down a toilet to an

inglorious end; they must first be anesthetized with special

chemicals, and then killed.

Respect for creation is, for Christians, based in the worship of the Creator. Despoilers of nature are unfaithful stewards of creation. We are to treat all creation -- and all creatures -- with respect and thankfulness. But, we are not to confuse plants and animals with humans. Humans have rights because human beings are made in the image of God. Plants do not have rights.

The Swiss committee holds that plants have the right to reproduce, and that this is essential to a plant’s dignity. They also held that a plant cannot be “arbitrarily” deprived of its life. Arbitrariness is, as might be guessed, in the eye of the beholder.

Professor Keller of the University of Zurich is embarrassed by this weak-headed thinking. So is Yves Poirier, a molecular biologist at the University of Lausanne. “Where does it stop?,” he asked. “Should we now defend the dignity of microbes and viruses?”

Gautam Naik, the paper’s reporter, asks an obvious question: “For a carrot, is there a more mortifying fate than being peeled, chopped and dropped into boiling water?”

The complications for biological research are real and important enough, but the consequences of this kind of radical thinking will reach far beyond biology.

When the Christian worldview is abandoned, there is no adequate replacement -- nothing that can ground human dignity in anything other than philosophical quicksand. When plants are said to have rights, human rights are automatically undermined. A biocentric worldview is a recipe for disaster, but it is a logical alternative once the Christian worldview is rejected.

Just ask the Swiss what happens when a theocentric worldview is abandoned. Better yet, ask a plant.

"The Silence of the Yams -- The Dignity of Plants?"

In the recent movie THE HAPPENING, plants, threatened by the growing human population, release a toxin into the air that causes people to kill themselves. A nursery owner tells the hero that plants can not only “target specific threats,” they can also communicate with each other and coordinate their “defense.”

While THE HAPPENING was panned by audiences and critics, one country appears to have taken the threat from plants seriously enough to sue for peace with the plant kingdom. That’s Switzerland.

How? By enshrining the “dignity” — their word, not mine — of plants in their constitution.

A molecular biologist at the University of Zürich recently sought permission to field test wheat that had been genetically modified to resist a particular kind of fungus. He not only had to prove that the test wouldn’t have unintended environmental consequences, he also had to “debate the finer points of plant dignity with university ethicists.” Then, he had to satisfy government officials that the trial “wouldn’t ‘disturb the vital functions or lifestyle’ of the plants.”

Dignity? Lifestyle? Of plants? Like many a farcical road, this one was paved with good intentions. In the 1990s, Switzerland amended its constitution to require that “account to be taken of the dignity of creation” — Switzerland’s word, not mine — ”when handling animals, plants and other organisms.”

Then, last spring, the parliament asked a panel of “philosophers, lawyers, geneticists and theologians” to determine how this requirement applies to plants. The panel’s report concluded that people do not have “absolute ownership” over plants and that “individual plants have an inherent worth.” Therefore, they concluded, “we may not use them just as we please, even if the plant community is not in danger.”

Plant community?

As ethicist Wesley J. Smith has pointed out, phrases like “plant community” and the “dignity” of plants is evidence that our rejection of the biblical worldview “is driving us crazy.” Having rejected the “unique dignity and moral worth of human beings,” it was logical that “we would come to see fauna and flora as entitled to rights.”

More than that, this shift in worldview, Smith writes, regards “treating people differently from animals simply because they are human beings” as “invidious discrimination.”

Unfortunately, the damage from this worldview isn’t limited to making Alpine countries look silly or creating more paperwork for researchers. While some of the sought-after parity between man and the rest of creation is achieved by raising the status of animals and plants, most of it comes through lowering our status as humans.

That’s where the real danger lies. Research that could help feed countless millions is made more difficult and even impossible because of concerns over plant “dignity.” Even worse, carrying the logic to its conclusion, the sanctity of human life becomes a matter of what you can do, not who you are — that is, someone created in the image of God.

By the end of THE HAPPENING, the threat from the plants creates a renewed appreciation for human life. For once, I wish that life would imitate the movies.

Art Shouldn't Clash With God

Life, Even As We Don’t Know It, Is No Accident

Job 38:1

Recently, a Scientific American article titled “The Search for Extraterrestrial Life as We Don’t Know It” reflected on the continued search for life across the universe. Not long ago, the search had been for life as we know it on Earth: carbon-based lifeforms, oxygen, DNA, and RNA.

Today, the search has expanded. After all, what if life takes other forms elsewhere?

In 2016, one group of thinkers offered a new focus for the search for life: complexity. Journalist Sarah Scoles described it this way: “[I]f you come across a fleet of 747s on Mars, you might not know where they came from, but you know they’re unlikely to be random.” That idea became the foundation for a NASA funded group, Laboratory for Agnostic Biosignatures, who look for forms of life in the universe.

The group may claim to be “agnostic,” but complexity points to design, and design points to a Mind. Maybe they will find Life (with a capital L) after all.

The Christian Worldview As Master Narrative: Creation

John 1:3

One of the hallmarks of the postmodern age is, as one of its main theorists has explained, “incredulity toward metanarratives.” This reflects the postmodern suspicion of any master explanation of world reality and human experience. But, from beginning to end, biblical Christianity is a master narrative. Biblical Christianity is not only a faith that involves essential truths; it is the story of God’s purpose to redeem humanity and to bring glory to himself. This narrative is revealed to us as a comprehensive master story that is as vast as the cosmos and so detailed as to include every atom and molecule of creation.

Even as the postmodern age has rejected the metanarrative, most postmodern thinkers accept the fact that human existence is essentially narrative in terms of our consciousness. This is an important insight, for it is impossible to give an account of our individual lives without using the structure of a story. The postmodern resistance to a master narrative is the fear that such a story would be inherently repressive. But the Christian gospel is the most liberating narrative ever heard and the Bible presents the story, not merely as one account of reality to be put alongside others, but as the one definitive account of God’s purposes.

Indeed, the Christian gospel is the story to which all other narratives are accountable. The Scripture narrates the story in the unfolding of God’s plan and purposes. The very God who reveals himself as sovereign and holy — the only true God — is the God who has generously shared the knowledge of himself and his purposes with his sinful creatures.

Creation — The Beginning of the Story

Every worldview and metanarrative has a beginning. Without exception, every worldview must give an account of how the cosmos came into being and must answer the question of its meaning. The very existence of the cosmos requires an answer to this question, and this answer determines so much of what follows in the narrative.

The Bible begins with the declaration that “in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen. 1:1). The doctrine of creation forms the starting point for our understanding of the cosmos and our place within it. The Bible’s straightforward explanation for the existence of all things is traced to God’s own intention to create the cosmos as the theater of his own glory. The Bible rejects all forms of dualism or polytheism, leaving the God of the Bible as the sole explanatory principle of the universe. Nothing that exists does so outside of his sovereignty and intention. The God of the Bible creates ex nihilo (out of nothing) and is not dependent upon any preexistent matter or conditioned by any external force.

As Creator, God takes responsibility for his creation. Furthermore, the Creator remains directly involved with his creation, ruling over all times, places, and authorities. He exercises his rule through a scrupulous providence that includes, as Jesus made clear, even the birds of the air and the lilies of the field (Matt. 6:26, 28).

The Bible also makes clear that the Creator is pleased with his creation. Having created all that exists, he declared his creation to be good. This verdict on creation is a refutation of any worldview that denies the goodness of creation or slanders the material world as unholy. At the same time, the Bible condemns any worship of nature as an end in itself.

The creation of human beings is the climax of the creation narrative. Having created everything else that exists, God crowned his creation when he created human beings as the singular creature made in his own image (Gen. 1:26-27). The Bible clearly and unambiguously reveals that human beings are special creatures — the only creatures made in the image of God. Even as we face contemporary efforts to dethrone humanity from a position of privilege within creation, the Bible makes clear that human beings are made in God’s image precisely so that we, alone within all creation, may consciously know and glorify God. Therefore the human creature is given the ability to fabricate and to manipulate the material world. God gave human beings the ability to till the soil, reap a harvest, and bring the earth under dominion. At the same time, God invested human beings with a crucial stewardship in our responsibility to use, enjoy, and care for creation as a matter of essential stewardship.

The Bible also reveals that gender is a part of the goodness of God’s creation. God made his human creatures as male and female and invested these creatures with responsibility to enjoy his guests and to reproduce within the context of marriage (Gen. 1:27-28). Marriage, too, is part of the goodness of God’s creation. While other creatures merely mate, humans are called to enter into a covenant of marriage whereby one man and one woman come together to form a union that is pleasing to God.

The biblical portrait of the creating God demonstrates a God of love whose character issues naturally in his creation. The loving character of God is woven into the warp and woof of his creation and the creatures within it. The substance of the biblical teaching focuses on God’s creation of the universe and all within it by the power of his word. The product of God’s creative activity is a universe of seemingly infinite variety, complexity, and mystery.

Thus, creation is not a brute fact without meaning. It derives its meaning from the divine character and will. As the theater of God’s redemptive activity, creation is not static, but is moving toward that goal established by decree before the foundation of the universe. Without the knowledge of divine creation, we would be left to ourselves in terms of discerning or discovering the very purpose for the existence of the material world and the means by which it came to exist.

All worldviews start with this great question and must give some account of beginnings. The naturalistic worldview insists that this account of beginnings must be comprehensively limited to natural and material causes and effects. Such a worldview runs into direct collision with the worldview of the Bible, for the Bible does not flinch from claiming and explaining that all that exists owes its existence ultimately to God himself (e.g., John 1:3).

One interesting aspect of worldview analysis is the recognition that, for the most part, everything that follows is contained within the account of origins. Once we know that God is the solitary explanation at the beginning, we can be confident that he will be the one who brings this story to a close in a way that brings him no less glory.

Synthetic Life: the Danger of God-like Pretensions

In May, headlines around the world proclaimed “Scientists Create Life!” The news prompted people to fantasize about a world in which, as one writer put it, we can “think about what sort of life-form we’d like to make — and then design and build it in much the same way we build a bridge or a car.”

The research behind all the headlines was first reported in the journal Nature. In the experiment, Craig Venter, one of the men who mapped the human genome, and his team “assembled a complete DNA of a bacterium, then inserted it in another bacterium and initiated synthesis.” The result was a bacterium with no genetic ancestors, whose “parent is a computer.”

According to Venter, the experiment proves that “genomes can be designed in the computer, chemically made in the laboratory and ... produce a new self-replicating cell.”

He called the results a “baby step” in the direction of producing “synthetic life” that would facilitate “breakthroughs” in the field known as “synthetic biology.”

Venter’s “baby step” had one commentator speculating about the “tantalizing possibility that we might one day write our own” genetic code, creating a “second nature.” According to Berkeley biologist Jay Keasling, “with the tools of synthetic biology, we don’t have to just accept what Nature has given us.”

People are fantasizing about “organisms that excrete biofuels, clean up toxic spills, strip clogged arteries of cholesterol, rapidly produce vaccines” and even “manufacture eco-friendly plastics.”

I say “fantasize” because we are still a long ways away from being able to do any of these things. And please note, Venter didn’t “create life.” According to John Horgan of Scientific American, who called Venter the “Lady GaGa of science,” what Venter did “was just another incremental step in the human manipulation of life.”

But even if you see beyond Venter’s genius for hype, what’s there should still concern us. Even those who acknowledge synthetic biology’s potential also admit that it is likely to create brand new risks for humanity.

These risks include biological weapons. Not just any biological weapons but the “most powerful ones imaginable,” according to Oxford ethicist Julian Savulescu. This and other “unparalleled” risks, as he calls them, makes his call for “new standards of safety evaluation” almost laughable.

David King of the UK’s Human Genetics Alert was right when he said that the danger in this technology lies in “scientists’ ambitions for total and unrestrained control over nature.”

That’s because even if our intentions are pure and our standards are rigorous, we humans are neither as smart nor as competent as our God-like pretensions make us feel. Fallen, finite man often finds ways to turn yesterday’s nightmare scenario into tomorrow’s headline. In a world where bridges collapse, oil rigs blow up, and cars suddenly accelerate, God-like control isn’t only hubris, it’s pure fantasy.

The only real way to avoid the unthinkable is not to try and play God in the first place. But that would require the kind of humility that Venter and company reject out-of-hand.

Hawking, The Cosmos and Its Creator

Stephen Hawking, perhaps the most famous scientific intellect since Albert Einstein, died March 14 at age 76 -- more than 50 years beyond his life expectancy.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, tormented Hawking’s body from the time it was diagnosed when he was a 21-year-old graduate research scholar at Cambridge University in England. It eventually chained him to a wheelchair, increasingly motionless and later speechless without the use of a voice synthesizer.

But ALS never imprisoned Hawking’s insatiably curious mind, which roamed freely across the universe from his perch at Cambridge, where he became Lucasian Professor of Mathematics -- a chair once held by his great intellectual predecessor, Sir Isaac Newton, who first explained the principles of gravity.

His courage and persistence in the face of physical obstacles especially inspired me over the years. As a young man, I helped care for my grandmother after she was afflicted with ALS. She progressively lost the use of all her muscles until she could communicate only by blinking her eyes. She died within three years of her diagnosis.

As an astrophysicist and cosmologist, Hawking relentlessly searched for a “unified theory of everything” -- that is, a way to explain the differences between big-picture astrophysics and Einstein’s theory of relativity on the one hand and tiny-picture particle physics and quantum mechanics on the other. Such a resolution, he contended, would help us understand how the laws of physics govern not only galaxies, stars and planets but subatomic particles.

“A complete, consistent unified theory is only our first step: Our goal is a complete understanding of the events around us, and of our own existence,” he declared in “A Brief History of Time,” his renowned 1988 book. It sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and helped explain such complex topics as black holes and gravity to the masses.

Hawking seemed to relish his fame and celebrity almost as much as his scientific pursuits. He traveled and lectured worldwide, traded wisecracks with talk-show hosts and appeared as himself on “Star Trek; The Next Generation,” “The Simpsons” and “The Big Bang Theory.” Several films dramatized his own life, including the “The Theory of Everything,” which won Eddie Redmayne an Oscar for his portrayal of Hawking.

But unlike some celebrity scientists who embrace celebrity more than science, Hawking was the real thing. He made major contributions to theoretical physics over a half-century of work.

Hawking never quite achieved his “theory of everything,” or an adequate explanation of the origin of the universe, and he acknowledged in later years that it might not be achievable. However, he wrote: “If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we would know the mind of God.”

An interesting statement, since Hawking rejected the existence of a personal God.

“God is the name people give to the reason we are here,” he said in an interview. “But I think that reason is the laws of physics rather than someone with whom one can have a personal relationship. An impersonal God.”

On another occasion, he said, “I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken-down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”

Lest anyone doubt his non-religious views, he clarified them in a later observation on his “mind of God” comment:

“Before we understand science, it is natural to believe that God created the universe. But now science offers a more convincing explanation. What I meant by ‘we would know the mind of God’ is, we would know everything that God would know, if there were a God, which there isn’t. I’m an atheist.”

Hawking, then, represented the consensus view of modern science, which sees itself as the successor to religious faith, since science supposedly sheds the bright light of reason on things only faith could explain in earlier times. He saw himself as one of the new priests of reason, having dethroned the old priests of faith and superstition.

That view saddens me, coming from such an inspiring figure. A creator was unnecessary to creation, Hawking concluded, since the universe might have had no beginning at all. Speculating about what came before the universe for him was like speculating about what is north of the North Pole. The universe is a closed system. Closed, but possibly without beginning or end.

That contradictory view requires more faith than Christianity. The shepherd king David’s awe at the vastness of the universe -- and worship of the one who created it -- stirred him to declare to the Creator in Psalm 8 that He made man “a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.... O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

Stephen Hawking, like every man and woman at the close of life, is now discovering which view is correct.
