NEBnCOMMENTS: While it is possible that the words “repent, for” were added to make this verse read like Matthew 3:2, it seems that the words are original since all Greek manuscripts include them.

KJV ASV NIV : The word “Jesus” is found in two different places in the manuscripts which contain it. This would seem to indicate that it was originally missing and was added to make the sense clear, especially since this verse started a Lectionary reading section.
