THese are, &c.] All the genealogies following are of such as were of the Church; for Jacob had the happinesse to have all his children to be of the Church: out of his issue, the Church began to spread.

Israel] Of the meaning of this name, and reason of giving it, see Genesis 32:28. The Church under the Law (Exodus 4:23. Deuteronomy 4:1.) and under the Gospel (Galat. 6. 16.) had this name.
Reuben] Genesis 29:32. and 30. 5. and 35. 18, 21. and 46. 8, &c. These were the heads of the twelve tribes, and are stiled, The twelve patriarchs, Acts 7:8.
