The Key Word בְּנֵי, be.Neigenerated

The word בֵּן (ben) means 'son' or 'child' and can refer to descendants, grandsons, or even figurative uses like qualities or characteristics. It is a noun in the masculine plural form here, indicating multiple sons.

In this verse, it establishes the familial relationship of Reuben's descendants, showing their connection to the larger narrative of Israel's tribes. The use of בְּנֵי emphasizes the importance of lineage in the Israelite culture.

How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated

This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.

Sentence Structuregenerated

The finite verb is absent in this verse, as it is a simple list of names following the subject. The structure is straightforward: a noun phrase identifies the subject, followed by a series of noun phrases listing the sons.

The word order places emphasis on the familial connections, beginning with the collective identity of Reuben's sons, which is typical in genealogical accounts.

Septuagint Backgroundgenerated

The Septuagint translates בְּנֵי as υἱοὶ (huioi), meaning 'sons.' This choice reflects the continuity of meaning across the translations, maintaining the focus on lineage.

The Greek word πρωτοτόκου for בְּכֹר emphasizes the significance of the firstborn in the family structure, similar to the Hebrew connotation.

In plain words — the whole versegenerated

1 Chronicles 5:3 lists the sons of Reuben, who is the firstborn of Israel. The names mentioned are Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. This verse is part of a genealogy that shows the family lineage of the tribes of Israel.

roo'-ben, ru'-ben (re'ubhen; Rhouben): The eldest son of Jacob, born to him by Leah in Paddan-aram (Ge 29:32).

1. Jacob's Oldest Son:

This verse seems to suggest two derivations of the name. As it stands in Massoretic Text it means "behold a son"; but the reason given for so calling him is "The Lord hath looked upon my affliction," which in Hebrew is ra'ah be`onyi, literally, "He hath seen my affliction." Of his boyhood we have only the story of the mandrakes (Ge 30:14). As the firstborn he should really have been leader among his father's sons. His birthright was forfeited by a deed of peculiar infamy (Ge 35:22), and as far as we know his tribe never took the lead in Israel. It is named first, indeed, in

Behold a son!, the eldest son of Jacob and Leah (Gen. 29:32). His sinful conduct, referred to in Gen. 35:22, brought down upon him his dying father’s malediction (48:4). He showed kindness to Joseph, and was the means of saving his life when his other brothers would have put him to death (37:21,22). It was he also who pledged his life and the life of his sons when Jacob was unwilling to let Benjamin go down into Egypt. After Jacob and his family went down into Egypt (46:8) no further mention is made of Reuben beyond what is recorded in ch. 49:3,4.

In the Norman period, however, "of" was taken to represent the French de (a use well developed by the time of Chaucer), and in the Elizabethan period both senses of "of" were in common use. But after about 1600 the later force of the word became predominant, and in the earlier sense (which is now practically obsolete) it was replaced by other prepositions. In consequence the King James Version (and in some cases the Revised Version (British and American)) contains many uses of "of" that are no longer familiar--most of them, to be sure, causing no difficulty, but there still being a few responsible for real obscurities.
