15Then Rahab let them down by a rope through the window, since the house where she lived was built into the wall of the city. 16“Go to the hill country,” she said, “so that your pursuers will not find you. Joshua 2:14 Summary
In Joshua 2:14, the men promise to protect Rahab and her family if she keeps their secret. This is a promise of kindness and faithfulness, similar to the kind of love and care that God shows to His people (as seen in Deuteronomy 7:9). The men are essentially saying that they will put their own lives on the line to keep Rahab and her family safe, just as Jesus put His life on the line for us (as seen in John 15:13). This verse teaches us about the importance of keeping promises and showing kindness to those around us, just as Rahab showed kindness to the spies.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean when the men say 'Our lives for your lives!' in Joshua 2:14?
This is a promise of protection and loyalty, similar to the covenant of kindness and faithfulness described in Ruth 3:9, where Boaz promises to care for Ruth as a near kinsman. The men are essentially saying that they will put their own lives on the line to ensure Rahab's safety and the safety of her family.
Why do the men agree to show kindness and faithfulness to Rahab and her family?
The men agree to show kindness and faithfulness to Rahab and her family because Rahab has shown them kindness by hiding them and not reporting their mission to the authorities, as seen in Joshua 2:4-7. This act of kindness is reminiscent of the command to love one's neighbor as oneself, as seen in Leviticus 19:18 and Mark 12:31.
What is the condition for the men to show kindness and faithfulness to Rahab and her family?
The condition is that Rahab must not report their mission to the authorities, as stated in Joshua 2:14. This is a test of Rahab's trustworthiness and loyalty, similar to the test of Abraham's faith in Genesis 22:1-14, where Abraham is asked to sacrifice his son Isaac as a demonstration of his trust in God.
How does this verse relate to the concept of covenant in the Bible?
This verse illustrates the concept of covenant, where two parties make a promise to each other and seal it with an oath, as seen in Genesis 31:44-54. The men's promise to Rahab is a type of covenant, where they pledge to protect and care for her and her family, just as God covenants with His people to protect and care for them, as seen in Deuteronomy 29:1-30:20.
