Jeremiah 44:7
Jeremiah 44:7 in Multiple Translations
So now, this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Why are you doing such great harm to yourselves by cutting off from Judah man and woman, child and infant, leaving yourselves without a remnant?
Therefore now thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain;
Therefore now thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your own souls, to cut off from you man and woman, infant and suckling, out of the midst of Judah, to leave you none remaining;
So now, the Lord, the God of armies, the God of Israel, has said, Why are you doing this great evil against yourselves, causing every man and woman, little child and baby at the breast among you in Judah to be cut off till not one is still living;
So this is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Why are you hurting yourselves so badly by removing from Judah every man, woman, child, infant, so you don't have anyone left?
Therefore now thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel, Wherfore commit ye this great euill against your soules, to cut off from you man and woman, childe and suckling out of Iudah, and leaue you none to remaine?
'And, now, thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel: Why are ye doing great evil unto your own souls, to cut off to you man and woman, infant and suckling, from the midst of Judah, so as not to leave to you a remnant:
“Therefore now the LORD, the God of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Why do you commit great evil against your own souls, to cut off from yourselves man and woman, infant and nursing child out of the middle of Judah, to leave yourselves no one remaining,
Therefore now thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; Why do ye commit this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain;
And now thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Why do you commit this great evil against your own souls, that there should die of you man and woman, child and suckling out of the midst of Juda, and no remnant should be left you:
So now I, the Commander of the armies of angels, the God whom you Israelis say you belong to, ask you: ‘Why are you causing yourselves to experience these disasters? Do you not realize that because of what you are doing, soon there will be no more men or women or children or infants left among you who have come here to Egypt from Judah?

Context — Judgment on the Jews in Egypt
7So now, this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Why are you doing such great harm to yourselves by cutting off from Judah man and woman, child and infant, leaving yourselves without a remnant?
8Why are you provoking Me to anger by the work of your hands by burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you have gone to reside? As a result, you will be cut off and will become an object of cursing and reproach among all the nations of the earth. 9Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers and of the kings of Judah and their wives, as well as the wickedness that you and your wives committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?Cross References

Jeremiah 44:7 Summary
[The Lord is asking the people of Judah why they are hurting themselves by sinning and disobeying Him, which will lead to their own destruction. He wants them to know that their choices have consequences, and if they continue down this path, they will be completely destroyed. This is similar to what we see in Deuteronomy 30:19, where the Lord sets before us life and death, blessing and curse. We can apply this principle to our own lives by making choices that align with God's will and purposes, and turning away from sinful patterns or habits that could lead to harm or destruction.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Lord saying to the people of Judah in Jeremiah 44:7?
The Lord is asking the people why they are causing harm to themselves by sinning and disobeying Him, which will lead to their own destruction, as seen in Jeremiah 44:7 and also in Deuteronomy 30:19 where He sets before them life and death, blessing and curse.
Who is being referred to as being 'cut off' in Jeremiah 44:7?
The Lord is referring to the people of Judah, including men, women, children, and infants, who will be cut off from their community and heritage due to their sinful actions, as also warned in Ezekiel 33:4 and Leviticus 26:30.
What is the consequence of the people's actions in Jeremiah 44:7?
The consequence of the people's sinful actions is that they will be left without a remnant, meaning they will be completely destroyed and cease to exist as a people, a fate also warned against in Jeremiah 7:20 and 2 Chronicles 34:24-25.
How does this verse relate to the concept of God's sovereignty and human responsibility?
This verse shows that God holds people responsible for their actions, and their choices have consequences, but it also demonstrates God's sovereignty as He warns them of the consequences and calls them to repentance, as seen in Isaiah 55:7 and Proverbs 28:13.

- In what ways can I heed the warning of Jeremiah 44:7 and turn away from sinful patterns or habits that could lead to harm or destruction in my life?
- How can I balance the concept of God's sovereignty with human responsibility, and what role do I play in making choices that align with God's will and purposes?
