Context — Blessings for a Defiled People

15Now consider carefully from this day forward: Before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the LORD, 16from that time, when one came expecting a heap of twenty ephahs of grain, there were but ten. When one came to the winepress to draw out fifty baths, there were but twenty.Cross References

Bring your worthless offerings no more; your incense is detestable to Me— your New Moons, Sabbaths, and convocations. I cannot endure iniquity in a solemn assembly. You earn wages to put into a bag pierced through.” This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully your ways. And what you brought home, I blew away. Why? declares the LORD of Hosts. Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house. Therefore, on account of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth has withheld its crops. Haggai 2:14 Summary
[This verse is saying that because of the people's sinful state, everything they do, including their offerings to God, is considered defiled or unclean. This is like how something that touches a corpse becomes unclean, as seen in Numbers 19:11-13. God wants us to be holy and set apart, as taught in Leviticus 11:44-45, and when we are not, our actions and offerings are not acceptable to Him. To be acceptable to God, we need to have a right heart and seek to follow Him, as seen in Matthew 15:18-19.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean for the people's works to be defiled before God?
According to Haggai 2:14, the people's works are defiled because of their sinful state, much like how a corpse can defile other things it comes into contact with, as seen in Numbers 19:11-13, and this defilement affects everything they do, including their offerings to God, as mentioned in Isaiah 1:13.
How can the people's offerings be defiled if they are given with good intentions?
The Bible teaches that our actions and intentions are not enough to make our offerings acceptable to God if our hearts are not right with Him, as seen in Matthew 15:18-19, and in this case, the people's defiled state is what makes their offerings unacceptable, as stated in Haggai 2:14.
Is this verse saying that God rejects all the people's efforts and offerings?
While Haggai 2:14 does say that the people's works and offerings are defiled, it is in the context of calling them to repentance and restoration, as seen in Haggai 2:15-19, and God's desire is to cleanse and restore His people, as promised in Ezekiel 36:25-27.
How does this verse relate to the concept of spiritual cleanliness?
This verse highlights the importance of spiritual cleanliness, as taught in the Bible, where God's people are called to be holy and set apart, as seen in Leviticus 11:44-45, and the defilement of the people's works is a result of their failure to maintain this spiritual cleanliness, as stated in Haggai 2:14.
