Genesis 12:9 Summary

[Genesis 12:9 tells us that Abram journeyed to the Negev, which was a region in the southern part of Israel. This journey shows that Abram was still following God's lead and trusting in His provision, just as he had when he first left his home in Genesis 12:4. As Abram traveled, he likely faced many challenges and uncertainties, but he continued to trust in God's sovereignty, as seen in Genesis 12:7. We can learn from Abram's example by trusting in God's guidance and provision in our own lives, even when the path ahead is unclear.]

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Abram journey to the Negev?

Abram journeyed to the Negev, likely due to the fertile land and availability of resources, as seen in Genesis 12:9, and also possibly in search of a place to settle as the Lord had promised him land in Genesis 12:7

What is the Negev?

The Negev is a region in the southern part of Israel, known for its arid desert landscape, as mentioned in Genesis 12:9, and is also referenced in other parts of the Bible, such as Numbers 13:17

Is Abram's journey to the Negev a fulfillment of God's promise?

While Abram's journey to the Negev may seem like a step of faith, it is not necessarily a direct fulfillment of God's promise to give him the land, as stated in Genesis 12:7, but rather a continuation of his travels in the region

How does Abram's journey relate to his faith?

Abram's journey to the Negev demonstrates his trust in God's guidance and provision, as seen in Genesis 12:9, and is an example of his faith in action, similar to his response to God's call in Genesis 12:4

Ellicott's Commentary on Genesis 12:9

(9) Toward the south.—The Negeb, or dry land, so called because the soil being a soft white chalk, the rains sink through it, and even in the valleys run below the surface of the ground. Though treeless, it is still rich in flocks and herds, but the water has to be collected in tanks and cisterns (Conder, Tent Work, ii. 87).

Cambridge Bible on Genesis 12:9

9. toward the South] Heb. Negeb, the southern tract of Judah. Negeb means “the dry land,” “the land of thin soil.” It was applied especially to the country in the southernmost region of Canaan, described in Joshua 15:21-32, and spoken of in Numbers 13:17; Numbers 13:22; Numbers 13:26. The Israelite, dwelling in Palestine, was accustomed to speak of the south as the “negeb” quarter, just as he spoke of the west as the “sea” quarter, of the compass. The R.V. prints the word “South” with a capital, when it denotes the region between Hebron and the wilderness. It is found in the form Ngb in an Egyptian writing of the reign of Thothmes III (1479–1447 b.c.) as a name for S. Palestine (Müller’s Asien u. Europa, p. 148).

Whedon's Commentary on Genesis 12:9
