Context — A Prophecy to the Mountains of Israel
3therefore prophesy and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says: Because they have made you desolate and have trampled you on every side, so that you became a possession of the rest of the nations and were taken up in slander by the lips of their talkers,
4therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD. This is what the Lord GOD says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, to the desolate ruins and abandoned cities, which have become a spoil and a mockery to the rest of the nations around you. 5Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Surely in My burning zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, who took My land as their own possession with wholehearted joy and utter contempt, so that its pastureland became plunder.Cross References

Ezekiel 36:3 Summary
This verse is saying that the nations around Israel have taken advantage of them and treated them badly, but God sees and cares about this. He hates it when people are mean and hurtful to each other, and He wants to bring justice and restoration (as seen in Isaiah 61:1-4). Just like a parent wants to protect and care for their child, God wants to protect and care for His people, and He will not let their suffering go unnoticed (as seen in Psalm 103:6-7).
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean for the nations to have made Israel desolate?
This refers to the way the surrounding nations have taken advantage of Israel's weakness and overrun their land, much like what is described in Deuteronomy 28:49-50, where God warns of the consequences of disobedience.
Why does God care about the slander of Israel by other nations?
God is a God of justice and righteousness, and He hates slander and gossip, as seen in Proverbs 6:16-19, where He lists seven things He hates, including a lying tongue.
How does this verse relate to the concept of God's sovereignty?
This verse shows that even when it seems like God is not in control, He is still working behind the scenes to bring about justice and restoration, as seen in Isaiah 46:10, where God declares that His plans will not be thwarted.
What is the significance of the phrase 'the rest of the nations' in this verse?
This phrase refers to the fact that Israel's desolation and slander are not just the result of one or two nations, but rather a collective effort by many nations, highlighting the widespread opposition to God's people, as seen in Psalm 83:1-8.
