Context — Israel’s Rebellion in the Wilderness
24For they did not practice My ordinances, but they rejected My statutes and profaned My Sabbaths, fixing their eyes on the idols of their fathers.
25I also gave them over to statutes that were not good and ordinances by which they could not live. 26And I pronounced them unclean through their gifts—the sacrifice of every firstborn in the fire—so that I might devastate them, in order that they would know that I am the LORD.Cross References

Ezekiel 20:24 Summary
[Ezekiel 20:24 tells us that the Israelites did not follow God's rules and instead looked to idols for guidance. This was a big mistake, and it made God very sad. We can learn from their mistake by making sure to follow God's commands and set apart time for Him, as seen in Exodus 20:8-11. By doing so, we can avoid the dangers of worldly influences and stay close to God, as encouraged in Psalm 119:1-8.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to 'prophane the Sabbaths' as mentioned in Ezekiel 20:24?
To profane the Sabbaths means to treat them as common or ordinary days, rather than setting them apart as holy, as commanded in Exodus 20:8-11 and Deuteronomy 5:12-15. This was a serious offense against God's ordinances.
Why did the Israelites fix their eyes on the idols of their fathers?
The Israelites were drawn to the idols of their fathers because they had not fully committed to following God's statutes and ordinances, and instead, they allowed the influences of their ancestors to lead them astray, as seen in 2 Kings 17:7-23 and Jeremiah 7:9-10.
How did God respond to the Israelites' disobedience in Ezekiel 20:24?
God responded to their disobedience by giving them over to statutes that were not good and ordinances by which they could not live, as stated in Ezekiel 20:25, which ultimately led to their devastation and dispersion among the nations.
What can we learn from the Israelites' mistakes in Ezekiel 20:24?
We can learn the importance of following God's commands and setting apart time for Him, as seen in Hebrews 4:9-11, and the dangers of allowing worldly influences to lead us astray from God's ordinances, as warned in 1 John 2:15-17.
Reflection Questions
- How do I prioritize God's ordinances and statutes in my daily life, and what are some practical ways I can set apart time for Him?
- In what ways can I be tempted to 'fix my eyes' on worldly idols, and how can I guard my heart against such influences?
- What are some areas in my life where I may be 'profaning the Sabbath' or treating holy things as common, and how can I repent and make amends?
- How can I balance my desire for freedom and autonomy with the need to submit to God's commands and ordinances, as seen in Romans 6:15-23?
