High Priesthood

12 sermons

The high priesthood holds a significant place in biblical theology, serving as a vital bridge between God and humanity. In the Old Testament, the high priest was appointed to offer sacrifices for the sins of the people, as outlined in Leviticus 16:30, where it is stated that on the Day of Atonement, the priest would make atonement for the sins of Israel. This role finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, our Great High Priest, who, as described in Hebrews 4:14-16, not only intercedes for us but also empathizes with our weaknesses. Jesus' priesthood is likened to that of Melchizedek, a figure who predated the Levitical priesthood, emphasizing the eternal nature of His intercession (Hebrews 7:17). The Holy Garments worn by the high priest, detailed in Exodus 28, symbolize the holiness required to approach God, a requirement fully met in Christ, who is clothed in righteousness (Romans 3:22). Furthermore, the tabernacle, where the high priest ministered, foreshadows the heavenly sanctuary where Christ now serves (Hebrews 8:1-2). Through His sacrifice, He has become the Everliving Intercessor, ensuring that we have direct access to the Father, as affirmed in 1 Timothy 2:5. In understanding the high priesthood, believers are reminded of the profound grace and mercy available through Jesus, who has not forgotten us but continually intercedes on our behalf.
