Calling

In the Bible, the concept of "calling" refers to God's invitation or summons to individuals for specific purposes or roles in His plan. This can encompass a wide range of meanings, including a general call to salvation, a vocational call to ministry, or a specific task or mission. The New Testament often emphasizes the idea of being "called" as part of the believer's identity in Christ. For instance, Romans 8:30 states, "And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified," indicating that God's calling is integral to the process of salvation and sanctification. In addition to the call to salvation, the Bible presents examples of specific callings, such as that of the apostles (Matthew 4:19) and Paul (Acts 9:15). In Ephesians 4:1, Paul encourages believers to "walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called," suggesting that each believer has a unique purpose and responsibility in the body of Christ. The concept of calling thus encompasses both the divine initiative of God in reaching out to humanity and the individual’s response to fulfill God’s intended purposes in their lives, which can manifest in various forms of service, leadership, and ministry within the community of faith.
