Psalms 9:1

Title. Muth-labben] Upon the death of his son, Psalms 3:1. or, upon the death of him that stood between the two armies, 1 Sam. 17. 4, &c. or, as some, upon the mean or counter-tenour.

WIth my whole heart] God is not rightly praised, except the whole heart go along in our prayers.

all thy marvellous works] Hidden works, that passe mans reason, and so make him marvell, Psalms 136:4.

Psalms 9:2

and rejoyce in thee] Thy favour shall be the subject of my joy, v. 14.

thou most High] Psalms 83:18.

Psalms 9:3

When] Or, Because.

are] Or, were.

turned back] Because thou hast made my foes flee before me.

they shall fall and perish] Or, they fell and perished.

Psalms 9:4

thou hast maintained my right] Heb. thou hast made my judgement. Howsoever the enemy seem for a time to prevail, yet God preserveth the just, Psalms 4:1.

right] Heb. in righteousnesse.

Psalms 9:5

Thou hast rebuked the heathen] Job 20:28. And, by rebuking them, made them 10. flee.

thou hast destroyed the wicked] The captain of them; for he speaks but of one.

thou hast put out their name for ever and ever] Wiped out. It signifies an utter destruction, Deuteronomy 9:14. and Deuteronomy 29:20. Psalms 109:13.

Psalms 9:6

O thou enemy] A derision of the enemy, that mindeth nothing but destruction: but the LORD will deliver his, and bring him into judgement.

O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetuall end, and thou hast

destroyed cities, &c.] Or, the destructions of the enemie are come to a perpetuall end, and their cities hast thou destroyed, &c.

Psalms 9:8

he shall judge the world in righteousnesse] Psalms 96:13. and Psalms 98:9.

in uprightnesse] Heb. in uprightnesses: that is, most upright.

Psalms 9:9

The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed] Psalms 37:39. and Psalms 46:1. and Psalms 91:2.

a refuge] Heb. an high place.

a refuge for the oppressed] Our miseries are means to cause us to feel Gods present care over us.

Psalms 9:10

know thy Name] Verse 16.

hast not forsaken them that seek thee] 2 Corinthians 1:10. 2 Timothy 4:17-18.

Psalms 9:12

When he maketh inquisition for blood] Genesis 9:5.

When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembreth them] Though God revenge not suddenly the wrong done to his, yet he suffereth not the wicked to go alwayes unpunished.

blood] Heb. bloods: that is, blood-shed or murder, Psalms 10:12.

them] Or, it.

humble] Or, afflicted.

Psalms 9:13

thou that liftest me up] Or, lifting me up. To wit, now.

from the gates of death] From present and most certain death, Genesis 4:7. Judges 5:8.

Psalms 9:14

in the gates of the daughter of Zion] In the open assembly of the Church. Gates of Zion are opposed to gates of death, v. 13.

Psalms 9:15

The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made] Psalms 7:16. and Psalms 57:6. For God overthroweth the wicked in their enterprises.

Psalms 9:16

The Lord is known by the judgement which he executeth] The mercy of God toward his saints must be declared, and the fall of the wicked must always be considered, v. 10.

Higgaion] A thing worthy to be often meditated of.

Psalms 9:17

that forget God] Who think not on God, nor his judgements on oppressours, and so go on to wrong the poor, v. 18. Psalms 50:22. and these shall be destroyed.

Psalms 9:18

for ever] Though God seem to neglect his for a time, yet he will not do it always, v. 12.

Psalms 9:20

to be but men] Which they may learn by thy judgements inflicted on them.
