Acts 18:1

COrinth] A chief citie of Achaia situate between the Aegean, and Ionian seas.

Acts 18:2

Aquila] Romans 16:3. A Jew converted to the faith of Christ.

Pontus] A Province in Asia.

Claudius] The Emperour of Rome.

Acts 18:3

and wrought] This he did in respect of the present necessitie, that he might not disadvantage the Gospel by being burthensome to any, Acts 20:34. 2 Thess. 3. 8.

tent-makers] Their trade was to make tents of skins, then much in use in those hot countreys.

Greeks] Chap. 11. 20.

Acts 18:5

was pressed in spirit] He had an extraordinary and vehement motion o the Spirit by a divine inspiration.

he shook his raiment] Matthew 10:14.

continued there] Gr. sat there.

Acts 18:12

Achaia] That is a Province of Greece.

Acts 18:13

contrary to the law] That is, the law of Moses, according to which the Romanes have permitted us to live: this they said, not being able to look to the end of the Law Christ Jesus, 2 Corinthians 3:13.

Acts 18:15

and names] The profane man thought the Jewes worshipped one name and the Christians another, as the heathens who adored bare names and meer fancies of men.

Acts 18:17

the Greeks] The Grecians which were not converted: the Syriac rendreth it, The profane.

none of those things] Neither for that which concerned Roligion, to defend Gods servants: nor for the States interest, to maintain peace and defend the oppressed.

having shorn] As Nazarites did at the end of their vow, Numbers 6:18. That is, Paul shore his head. See Ch. 21. 24.

Cenchrea] A part of the Corinthians.

Ephesus] A citie of Ionia in Asia the lesse.

if God will] 1 Corinthians 4:19. James 4. 15.

Cesared] Called Cesarea Stratonis.

And a certain Jew] 1 Corinthians 1:12.

Alexandria] A citie in Egypt.

instructed in the way] The Greek word signifieth one that is entred into Religion, or catechised, as Luke 1:4. as those who are taught the rudiments and principles thereof.

the Baptisme of John] That is, the doctrine of John.

Acts 18:26

way of God] The Doctrine of the Gospel.
