The Key Word — קֹ֚דֶשׁ, Ko.deshgenerated
The word קֹדֶשׁ (qodesh) signifies something holy or set apart. It emphasizes the idea of being consecrated to God, reflecting a state of sacredness that is essential in worship contexts.
In this verse, it indicates that the profits from Tyre's trade will be dedicated to the LORD, transforming what was once secular wealth into something sacred. This aligns with the broader biblical theme of dedicating resources to God.
How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated
The verse is examined in the Berean Standard Bible, which uses the term set apart for the Hebrew קֹדֶשׁ. The KJV and ASV also render it similarly, maintaining the notion of holiness.
Where translations differ is in the rendering of עָתִֽיק. The ASV, KJV, GNV, and others use durable, while the YLT opts for lasting, and the ILT chooses magnificent.
Sentence Structuregenerated
The finite verb וְהָיָ֨ה (ve.ha.Yah) governs the whole verse, indicating a future state. Several phrases follow, detailing the nature of the profits and their intended purpose.
The structure emphasizes the consecration of Tyre's profits, with a clear distinction between what will happen (set apart) and what will not (stored or hoarded). This arrangement highlights the transformation of Tyre's economic output into a sacred offering.
Septuagint Backgroundgenerated
The Septuagint translates קֹדֶשׁ as ἅγιον (hagion), which also means 'holy'. This choice reinforces the idea of sacredness associated with the profits dedicated to God.
The Greek word μισθὸς (misthos) is used for wages, indicating a direct connection to the concept of remuneration that is also set apart for divine purposes.

Charles John Ellicott1819–1905Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(18) Her merchandise and her hire shall be holiness to the Lord.—The words seem to reverse the rule of Deu 23:18, which, probably not without a reference to practices like those connected with the worship of Mylitta (Herod., i. 99), forbade gifts that were so gained from being offered in the Sanctuary. Here, it seems to be implied, the imagery was not to be carried to what might have seemed its logical conclusion. The harlot city, penitent and converted, might be allowed, strange as it might seem, to bring the gains of her harlotry into the temple of the Lord. Interpreted religiously, the prophet sees the admission of proselytes to the worship of Israel in the future, as he had seen it…

The four witnesses to this verse — Masoretic, Septuagint, Samaritan, Qumran
The Masoretic Text presents the verse as stating that the profits and wages will be dedicated to the LORD and will not be stored or saved, with the profits going to those who live before the LORD for abundant food and fine clothing. The Septuagint matches 16 of the 19 words from the Masoretic Text, but the exact wording and structure differ due to the nature of the translation. The Dead Sea Scrolls, specifically 4Q57 and 1Qisaa, contain similar wording to the Masoretic Text, with 1Qisaa being nearly identical, while 4Q57 has some words partly restored and others supplied by an editor. Overall, the main agreement across these texts is the thematic content regarding the dedication of profits to the LORD, but there are variations in specific wording and completeness of the text.

Four traditions, not one. “On the leather” means the letters physically survive on the scroll, as against letters an editor has supplied to fill a hole in it — a restoration is a scholar’s reading, not a reading of the manuscript. dwel:
(1) In the Old Testament "dwell" is a translation of 9 words, of which by far the most frequent is yashabh, "to sit down," translated "dwell" over 400 times (Ge 4:20; Jos 20:4; 1Ch 17:1,4,5, etc.); also very frequently "sit," and sometimes "abide," "inhabit," "remain." Another word often rendered "dwell" is shakhan or shakhen ("to settle down"), from which is derived the rabbinic word shekhinah (literally, "that which dwells"), the light on the mercy-seat which symbolized the Divine presence (Ex 25:8, etc.). In order to avoid appearing to localize the Divine Being, wherever God is said to "dwell" in a place, the Targum renders that He "causes His Shekinah to dwell"…

Tents were in primitive times the common dwellings of men. Houses were afterwards built, the walls of which were frequently of mud (Job 24:16; Matt. 6:19, 20) or of sun-dried bricks.
God “dwells in light” (1 Tim. 6:16; 1 John 1:7), in heaven (Ps. 123:1), in his church (Ps. 9:11; 1 John 4:12). Christ dwelt on earth in the days of his humiliation (John 1:14). He now dwells in the hearts of his people (Eph.…

Eating
The ancient Hebrews would not eat with the Egyptians (Gen. 43:32). In the time of our Lord they would not eat with Samaritans (John 4:9), and were astonished that he ate with publicans and sinners (Matt. 9:11). The Hebrews originally sat at table, but afterwards adopted the Persian and Chaldean practice of reclining (Luke 7:36-50). Their principal meal was at noon (Gen. 43:16; 1 Kings 20:16; Ruth 2:14; Luke 14:12). The word “eat” is used metaphorically…
The Jews would have considered themselves polluted by eating with people of another religion, or with any who were ceremonially unclean or disreputable-as with Samaritans, Joh 4:9, publicans, Mt 9:11, or Gentiles, Ac 10:28 Ga 2:12. Eating together was an established token of mutual confidence and friendship, a pledge of friendly relations between families, which their children were expected to perpetuate. The rites of hospitality were held sacred; and to this day, among the Arabs, a fugitive is safe for the time, if he gains the shelter of even an enemy’s tent. The abuse of hospitality was a great crime, Ps 41:9.
