The Key Word — עָבַד, 'e.'e.Vodgenerated
The verb עָבַד (abad) means 'to serve' and encompasses a range of activities from laboring for others to serving God. The parsing indicates it is in the imperfect tense, first person singular, suggesting an ongoing or future action. Hushai’s use of this verb emphasizes his readiness to serve Absalom, mirroring his past service to David.
This word can also imply slavery or bondage, which highlights the depth of commitment Hushai is expressing. His declaration is not merely about performing tasks; it signifies a profound allegiance and dedication to the one he serves.
How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated
This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.
Sentence Structuregenerated
The main clause is governed by the verb אֶֽעֱבֹ֔ד, will I serve, which is followed by a prepositional phrase indicating the object of service. The structure emphasizes Hushai's commitment through a series of clauses that reinforce his loyalty.
The sentence is built around the contrast between past and future service, with the phrase כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר (just as) linking his previous actions to his intended future actions, creating a strong rhetorical connection.
Septuagint Backgroundgenerated
The Septuagint translates עָבַד as δουλεύσω, which means 'I will serve.' This choice reflects a direct connection to the concept of servitude, emphasizing Hushai's role as a loyal servant.
The use of δουλεύσω also carries connotations of being bound to serve, aligning with the Hebrew's implication of deep commitment and loyalty.
