Context — The Genealogy of Levigenerated

19This was their appointed order for service when they entered the house of the LORD, according to the regulations prescribed for them by their forefather Aaron, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded him.
20Now these were the remaining descendants of Levi: From the sons of Amram: Shubael; from the sons of Shubael: Jehdeiah.
21As for Rehabiah, from his sons: The first was Isshiah.
22From the Izharites: Shelomoth; from the sons of Shelomoth: Jahath.

1 Chronicles 24:20 provides a record of the descendants of Levi, specifically noting the family line from Amram to Shubael and Jehdeiah. This passage is part of a larger genealogical framework that underscores the importance of lineage and priestly roles within Israel's religious structure, as seen in earlier chapters detailing the Levitical duties and families.

The Key Word יָתַר, ha.no.ta.Rimgenerated

The verb יָתַר (yâthar) means to remain or be left over. It conveys the idea of what is left after a selection or division, emphasizing the continuity of the Levitical line.

In this verse, it indicates the remaining descendants of Levi after certain families or individuals may have been excluded from the priestly service, thus highlighting the importance of those who continue in the lineage.

How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated

This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.

Sentence Structuregenerated

The main clause is governed by the subject שֽׁוּבָאֵ֔ל (Shubael), with a series of prepositional phrases detailing the lineage. The structure emphasizes the familial connections by listing the descendants in a clear hierarchical manner.

The word order places the subjects at the forefront, indicating their significance in the genealogical record, while the prepositional phrases provide context and clarity regarding their lineage.

Septuagint Backgroundgenerated

The Septuagint translates יָתַר as καταλοίποις, which conveys a similar meaning of 'remaining' or 'left over.' This choice reflects a consistent interpretation of the Hebrew term, maintaining the focus on the descendants who continue the line.

The LXX does not introduce any significant interpretative shifts, preserving the genealogical emphasis found in the Hebrew text.

In the Norman period, however, "of" was taken to represent the French de (a use well developed by the time of Chaucer), and in the Elizabethan period both senses of "of" were in common use. But after about 1600 the later force of the word became predominant, and in the earlier sense (which is now practically obsolete) it was replaced by other prepositions. In consequence the King James Version (and in some cases the Revised Version (British and American)) contains many uses of "of" that are no longer familiar--most of them, to be sure, causing no difficulty, but there still being a few responsible for real obscurities.
