Psalms 104:31 Summary

[This verse is a beautiful expression of praise and worship to God, acknowledging that His glory will last forever and that He delights in the things He has made, just like a parent is proud of their children. We can see this theme of God's delight in creation in Psalms 19:1-6, where the heavens declare God's glory. It's a reminder to us to worship and adore Him, not just for what He does, but for who He is. As we read in Revelation 4:11, God is worthy of our praise because He created all things and they exist for His pleasure.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean for the glory of the LORD to endure forever?

This means that God's splendor, majesty, and praise will never fade or come to an end, as declared in Psalms 102:27 and Hebrews 13:8, where it says Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

How can the LORD rejoice in His works?

God takes delight in His creation, including humanity, as seen in Psalms 8:3-8 where the psalmist marvels at the majesty of God's works, and in Proverbs 8:30-31, where wisdom is described as rejoicing in God's creation.

What is the significance of this verse in the context of the surrounding verses?

This verse serves as a praise and adoration to God after describing the power and might of God in creating and sustaining life in Psalms 104:29-30, and before expressing personal commitment to worship in Psalms 104:33, reflecting the theme of acknowledging God's sovereignty over all creation, as seen in Psalms 103:19-22.

How should we respond to this verse in our daily lives?

We should respond with worship, praise, and adoration, recognizing God's eternal glory and His delight in His works, as encouraged in Psalms 100:1-5 and Romans 11:36, where all things are from Him and for Him.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some of God's works in my life that I can rejoice in and praise Him for?
  2. How can I reflect God's glory in my daily life, and what does that look like in my relationships and actions?
  3. In what ways can I join with the psalmist in declaring the glory of the LORD and rejoicing in His works?
  4. What are some things that I can do to cultivate a heart of worship and adoration, like the one expressed in this verse?

Gill's Exposition on Psalms 104:31

The glory of the Lord shall endure for ever,.... The glory which arises from the works of his hands, which is due unto him, and shall be given him; this is opposed to the perishing and fading glory

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Psalms 104:31

The glory of the LORD shall endure for ever: the LORD shall rejoice in his works. The glory of the Lord shall endure forever: the Lord shall rejoice in his works - as He did when creation was completed (Genesis 1:31).

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Psalms 104:31

So the sense is, Thus God doth and will advance the glory of his wisdom, and power, and goodness in upholding and continuing the works of his hands from generation to generation, and he doth and will take pleasure both in the preservation and blessing of his works, as also in his reflection upon these works of his providence, as he did rest and delight himself in the contemplation of his works of creation, as is noted, 2:2,3. But the words are by divers, and, it may seem, more agreeably to the Hebrew text, rendered thus, Let (for the first word is of the imperative mood) the glory of the Lord endure for ever, and let the Lord have joy (or, then shall the Lord rejoice) in his works. So this is added as a convenient doxology or thanksgiving after the commemoration of his great and gracious works; and the sense may be this, Seeing therefore God hath enriched the earth and us with so many fruits of his bounty, let it be our constant desire and endeavour that God may be perpetually served and glorified in and by them, and that God may be no more grieved at the remembrance of his kindness to us, as he was, ,6, and thereby be again provoked to destroy us, but may take pleasure in beholding and cherishing of his own workmanship.

Trapp's Commentary on Psalms 104:31

Psalms 104:31 The glory of the LORD shall endure for ever: the LORD shall rejoice in his works.Ver. 31. The glory of the Lord shall endure for ever] Or, Let glory be to the Lord for ever, sc. for his great works of creation and conservation. The Lord shall rejoice in his works] As he did at the creation, when he saw all to be good, and very good; so still, it doth God good, as it were, to see the poor creatures feed, and men to give him the honour of all.

Ellicott's Commentary on Psalms 104:31

(31) The Lord shall rejoice.—The poet still follows Genesis in representing God as looking on His finished work with pleasure, but he says nothing of a sabbath. But it is possible that the thought of the sabbath hymns of praise led him to join man with the Divine Being in celebrating the glory and perfection of creation.

Cambridge Bible on Psalms 104:31

31–35. Concluding prayers and vows.

Barnes' Notes on Psalms 104:31

The glory of the Lord shall endure for ever - Margin, as in Hebrew, “shall be.” It might be rendered, “Let the glory of the Lord be for ever,” implying a strong desire that it should be so.

Whedon's Commentary on Psalms 104:31

31. The glory of the Lord shall endure for ever—This is proposed as the end of all his works, (Psalms 104:2; Psalms 104:24,) and the moral of this graphic and beautiful review.
