And when He stood up to read, the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then He rolled up the scroll, returned it to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him, and He began by saying, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” All spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that came from His lips. “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” they asked. Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Do here in Your hometown what we have heard that You did in Capernaum.’” Then He added, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown. But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and great famine swept over all the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to the widow of Zarephath in Sidon. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet. Yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.” On hearing this, all the people in the synagogue were enraged. They got up, drove Him out of the town, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him over the cliff. But Jesus passed through the crowd and went on His way. |

Jeremiah 36:8 Summary
[Jeremiah 36:8 tells us that Baruch, Jeremiah's scribe, read the words of the Lord from a scroll in the house of the Lord. This was a brave thing to do, as it was a call to the people to repent and turn back to God. It reminds us of the importance of listening to and obeying God's word, as seen in Deuteronomy 8:3 and Matthew 4:4. By reading the scroll, Baruch was helping the people to hear God's message and respond to it.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the significance of Baruch reading the words of the Lord from the scroll in the house of the Lord?
Baruch's action was a bold declaration of God's message to the people, calling them to repentance, as seen in Jeremiah 36:8, and is reminiscent of other prophets who spoke God's word in the temple, such as Isaiah 2:3 and Ezekiel 33:2-6.
Why did Jeremiah have Baruch read the scroll instead of reading it himself?
Jeremiah may have been restricted from entering the temple, as some prophets were, so he had Baruch, his scribe, read the scroll on his behalf, as instructed in Jeremiah 36:5-6, similar to how Moses had Aaron speak on his behalf in Exodus 4:14-16.
What can we learn from Baruch's obedience to Jeremiah's command?
Baruch's obedience demonstrates the importance of trusting and following God's instructions, even when it may be difficult or unpopular, as seen in Jeremiah 36:8 and emphasized in Proverbs 3:5-6 and Hebrews 11:8.
How does this event relate to the overall message of Jeremiah?
This event is part of Jeremiah's larger call to the people of Judah to repent and turn back to God, as seen in Jeremiah 36:7 and throughout the book of Jeremiah, such as in Jeremiah 18:11 and Jeremiah 25:4-7.
