Context — Judah Rebuked
13“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem: ‘Will you not accept discipline and obey My words?’ declares the LORD.
14The words of Jonadab son of Rechab have been carried out. He commanded his sons not to drink wine, and they have not drunk it to this very day because they have obeyed the command of their forefather. But I have spoken to you again and again, and you have not obeyed Me! 15Again and again I have sent you all My servants the prophets, proclaiming: ‘Turn now, each of you, from your wicked ways, and correct your actions. Do not go after other gods to serve them. Live in the land that I have given to you and your fathers.’ But you have not inclined your ear or listened to Me.Cross References

Jeremiah 35:13 Summary
[This verse is a call from God to the people of Judah and Jerusalem to listen to and obey His words. God is asking them to be willing to learn from and submit to His correction, just like a child learns from their parents. As seen in Deuteronomy 8:5, God disciplines those He loves, and His discipline is always for our good. By obeying God's words, we can demonstrate our love and trust in Him, just as the Rechabites obeyed their forefather's commands in Jeremiah 35:14.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to 'accept discipline' in Jeremiah 35:13?
To accept discipline means to be willing to learn from and submit to God's correction, as seen in Proverbs 1:7, which says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, and in Hebrews 12:5-11, where God's discipline is compared to a father's correction of his children.
Why does God ask if the men of Judah and Jerusalem will obey His words?
God asks this question because He has spoken to them numerous times through prophets like Jeremiah, and they have consistently refused to listen, as seen in Jeremiah 35:14-15, where God laments that they have not obeyed Him despite His repeated warnings.
What is the significance of the phrase 'the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel' in this verse?
This phrase emphasizes God's power and authority over all creation, as well as His special relationship with the nation of Israel, as seen in Isaiah 6:3, where God is worshiped as the Lord of Hosts, and in Exodus 3:15, where God reveals Himself as the God of Israel.
How does this verse relate to the rest of the chapter?
This verse serves as a transition from the story of the Rechabites, who obeyed their forefather's commands, to God's lament that the people of Judah and Jerusalem have not obeyed Him, highlighting the contrast between their disobedience and the Rechabites' faithfulness, as seen in Jeremiah 35:14-15.
