ReferenceText (BSB)
1 Numbers 21:23–30 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. Instead, he gathered his whole army and went out to confront Israel in the wilderness. When he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel. And Israel put him to the sword and took possession of his land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok—but only up to the border of the Ammonites, because it was fortified. Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites and occupied them, including Heshbon and all its villages. Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land as far as the Arnon. That is why the poets say: “Come to Heshbon, let it be rebuilt; let the city of Sihon be restored. For a fire went out from Heshbon, a blaze from the city of Sihon. It consumed Ar of Moab, the rulers of Arnon’s heights. Woe to you, O Moab! You are destroyed, O people of Chemosh! He gave up his sons as refugees, and his daughters into captivity to Sihon king of the Amorites. But we have overthrown them; Heshbon is destroyed as far as Dibon. We demolished them as far as Nophah, which reaches to Medeba. ”
2 Judges 11:20–23 But Sihon would not trust Israel to pass through his territory. So he gathered all his people, encamped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel. Then the LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, who defeated them. So Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites who inhabited that country, seizing all the land from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan. Now since the LORD, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites from before His people Israel, should you now possess it?
3 Psalms 136:19 Sihon king of the Amorites His loving devotion endures forever.
4 Nehemiah 9:22 You gave them kingdoms and peoples and allotted to them every corner of the land. So they took the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and of Og king of Bashan.
5 Psalms 120:7 I am in favor of peace; but when I speak, they want war.
6 Psalms 135:11 Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan, and all the kings of Canaan.

Deuteronomy 2:32 Summary

This verse tells us that Sihon, the king of Heshbon, came out to fight against the Israelites at a place called Jahaz. This happened because God had made Sihon stubborn and unwilling to listen, as we see in Deuteronomy 2:30. The Israelites trusted in God's power and promises, and He gave them victory over Sihon and his army, as seen in Deuteronomy 2:33. This reminds us that when we trust in God and obey His will, He can give us victory over any challenge we face, just like He did for the Israelites (Psalm 20:7, Joshua 1:8).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Sihon and his army come out to battle against the Israelites?

Sihon and his army came out to battle against the Israelites because the Lord had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate, as stated in Deuteronomy 2:30, in order to deliver him into the Israelites' hand, as seen in Deuteronomy 2:31.

What can we learn from Sihon's decision to engage in battle?

We can learn that when we resist God's plan, we may end up facing opposition and defeat, as Sihon did, whereas obedience to God's will can lead to victory and success, as seen in Deuteronomy 2:33 and Joshua 1:8.

How does this verse relate to the concept of spiritual warfare?

This verse illustrates the spiritual battle between God's people and those who oppose them, as seen in Ephesians 6:12, and demonstrates that God is the one who gives victory to His people, as stated in Deuteronomy 2:33 and 1 Samuel 17:47.

What role does faith play in this verse?

Faith plays a significant role in this verse, as the Israelites had to trust in God's promise to deliver Sihon into their hands, as stated in Deuteronomy 2:31, and trust in His power to give them victory, as seen in Psalm 20:7 and Hebrews 11:6.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways I can trust in God's power and promises in my own life, just like the Israelites did in this verse?
  2. How can I apply the lesson of Sihon's stubbornness to my own life, and what are some areas where I may be resisting God's plan?
  3. In what ways can I see God's sovereignty and control in the events of my life, just as He was in control of the battle between the Israelites and Sihon's army?
  4. What does this verse teach me about the importance of obedience to God's will, and how can I apply that to my daily decisions and actions?
