Deuteronomy 11:16 Summary

[This verse is warning us to be careful not to get distracted from worshiping the one true God, and to not get lured into worshiping other things that are not truly God, as seen in Deuteronomy 11:16. We need to remember that God is the one who provides for us and takes care of us, and we should prioritize our relationship with Him above all else, as promised in Psalm 37:3-7. If we start to worship other things, we can lose God's blessing and provision, as warned in Deuteronomy 11:17. We should focus on fixing God's words in our hearts and minds, as commanded in Deuteronomy 11:18, and be mindful of the temptations that surround us, as warned in 1 Corinthians 10:12.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to be enticed to turn aside to worship other gods?

This means to be tempted or lured away from worshiping the one true God to worship false idols, as warned in Deuteronomy 11:16, similar to the temptation faced by the Israelites in Exodus 32:1-6 when they made a golden calf to worship.

Why is it important to be careful not to worship other gods?

Worshiping other gods can lead to God's anger, as seen in Deuteronomy 11:17, and can result in severe consequences, such as the loss of God's provision and protection, as promised in Deuteronomy 28:1-14 if we obey, and Deuteronomy 28:15-68 if we disobey.

How can we avoid being enticed to worship other gods?

We can avoid being enticed to worship other gods by fixing God's words in our hearts and minds, as commanded in Deuteronomy 11:18, and by being mindful of the temptations and idols that surround us, as warned in 1 John 5:21.

What are some modern-day examples of worshiping other gods?

Modern-day examples of worshiping other gods can include prioritizing material possessions, status, or power over our relationship with God, as warned in Matthew 6:24, or engaging in spiritual practices that are not based on biblical teachings, such as astrology or occultism, which are forbidden in Deuteronomy 18:10-12.

  4. How can I balance my desire for the blessings and provisions promised in Deuteronomy 11:14-15 with the warning against worshiping other gods in Deuteronomy 11:16?

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Deuteronomy 11:16

That your heart be not deceived by the specious pretenses of idolaters, who will plead the general consent of all nations, except yours, in the worship of creatures, and that they worship the creatures only for God’ s sake, and as they are glorious works of God, whom they worship in and by them; which, and the like arguments, being commonly alleged by heathens for their idolatries, as their own writers declare, might possibly seduce an unwary Israelite; and therefore they are here cautioned against such deceit, and withal it is implied, that if a man’ s mind be corrupted and deceived, so as he believes idolatry to be lawful, this will not excuse him in the sight of God.

16, 17. The enjoyment of so much blessing in the land suggests, as usual (cp. Deuteronomy 6:14 f., Deuteronomy 8:19 f.), a warning against being deceived into attributing it to other gods, i.e. the Baalim, already regarded in the land as the authors of its fertility, and worshipping them. Whether this warning is from the same hand as the preceding vv. is difficult to determine. The fact that it is in the Pl. while they are in the Sg., and that it is not so necessary to their argument as it is to the context in Deuteronomy 6:14 f. and Deuteronomy 8:19 f., suggests here another hand. At the same time it is relevant to what precedes, and in Deuteronomy 11:17 directly attaches itself to that. Nor is it all compiled of formulas. 16.
