Context — The King Who Exalts Himself
37He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers, nor for the one desired by women, nor for any other god, because he will magnify himself above them all.
38And in their place, he will honor a god of fortresses—a god his fathers did not know—with gold, silver, precious stones, and riches. 39He will attack the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god and will greatly honor those who acknowledge him, making them rulers over many and distributing the land for a price.Cross References

Daniel 11:37 Summary
[This verse is talking about a king who will become very proud and arrogant, and will start to think that he is above all other gods, including the one true God, as seen in Daniel 11:36. He will reject the traditional beliefs of his ancestors and instead worship himself, which is a form of idolatry, as warned against in Deuteronomy 8:19-20. This is a warning to us to always remember that God is the one who is truly in control, and we should never try to elevate ourselves above Him, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6. By keeping our focus on God and His Word, we can avoid the trap of pride and self-exaltation, and instead cultivate a heart of humility and dependence on Him, as seen in Psalm 37:3-7.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that the king will show no regard for the gods of his fathers?
This means that the king will reject the traditional gods and beliefs of his ancestors, instead choosing to exalt himself above all others, as seen in Daniel 11:36 where he magnifies himself above every god, and speaks against the God of gods, similar to the actions of Antiochus Epiphanes in 1 Maccabees 1:54-55.
Who is the one desired by women mentioned in this verse?
The identity of the one desired by women is not explicitly stated, but some interpretations suggest it could be Tammuz, a pagan god worshipped by women in ancient times, as mentioned in Ezekiel 8:14, where the women were weeping for Tammuz.
Why will the king magnify himself above all other gods?
The king will magnify himself because of his own pride and arrogance, as stated in Daniel 11:36, where he speaks monstrous things against the God of gods, demonstrating his self-exaltation and disregard for any authority higher than himself, similar to the pride of Lucifer in Isaiah 14:13-14.
Is this verse talking about a specific historical figure or a future event?
While this verse has been interpreted as referring to the historical figure of Antiochus Epiphanes, many scholars also see it as having a future fulfillment in the Antichrist, who will exhibit similar characteristics of self-exaltation and blasphemy, as described in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 and Revelation 13:5-6.

- How can I balance my desire for recognition and accomplishment with a humble dependence on God, as seen in Jeremiah 9:23-24?
- What are some idols or false gods that I may be unknowingly worshipping in my life, and how can I turn away from them to worship the one true God, as commanded in Exodus 20:3-5?
- How can I cultivate a heart of reverence and awe for God, rather than trying to elevate myself or other things to His level, as seen in Psalm 95:6-7?
