2 Samuel 13:3 Summary

This verse, 2 Samuel 13:3, tells us about Amnon's friend Jonadab, who was very smart and cunning. Jonadab's character and actions remind us to be careful about who we spend time with and listen to, because they can influence our choices and actions, similar to the warnings in Proverbs 22:24-25. Just like how Jonadab's advice affected Amnon, the people we surround ourselves with can either lead us closer to God or further away, as seen in 1 Corinthians 15:33. We should strive to surround ourselves with people who encourage us to follow God's will, as encouraged in Hebrews 10:24-25.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who was Jonadab and why is he significant in this story?

Jonadab was the son of David's brother Shimeah, making him a cousin of Amnon and a member of the royal family, as seen in 2 Samuel 13:3. His shrewdness is highlighted, which becomes important in the advice he gives to Amnon.

What does it mean that Jonadab was a 'very shrewd man'?

Being 'very shrewd' means Jonadab was cunning and clever, able to think strategically, as noted in 2 Samuel 13:3. This characteristic is similar to the wisdom and cunning seen in other biblical figures, such as Solomon in 1 Kings 3:12.

How does Jonadab's friendship with Amnon influence the events that unfold?

Jonadab's advice to Amnon, given his shrewd nature, plays a significant role in the plot to deceive King David and gain access to Tamar, as seen in 2 Samuel 13:4-5. This shows how the company we keep can influence our actions and decisions, a principle also found in Proverbs 22:24-25.

What can we learn from the introduction of Jonadab in this verse?

The introduction of Jonadab teaches us about the importance of the company we keep and how it can affect our decisions and actions, similar to the warnings in 1 Corinthians 15:33. It also sets the stage for the tragic events that will unfold, highlighting the consequences of sin and poor counsel, as seen in the story of David and Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 11:1-27.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can we discern whether the friends we keep are influencing us towards or away from God's will, as seen in 2 Samuel 13:3 and other biblical examples?

Gill's Exposition on 2 Samuel 13:3

But Amnon had a friend,.... Though in the issue his friendship proved his ruin: whose name [was] Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother; so that they were own cousins, the same with Shammah, 1

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on 2 Samuel 13:3

But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David's brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man. Jonadab, the son of Shimeah - or Shammah (1 Samuel 16:9), who was one of David's brothers.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on 2 Samuel 13:3

Trapp's Commentary on 2 Samuel 13:3

2 Samuel 13:3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name [was] Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’ s brother: and Jonadab [was] a very subtil man.Ver. 3. But Amnon had a friend.] A friend no friend; a carnal friend, but a spiritual enemy, who advised, for the recovery of his body, the ruin of his soul. Such a false friend to Antiochus was Erasistratus, the physician, who, finding him lovesick, persuaded his father Seleucus to part with his wife Stratonice to him, for the saving of his life. And Jonadab was a very subtle man.] Ingeniose nequam, witty, but wicked; and therefore a fit tool for the devil to work with. Good natural parts abused prove to be as press money to impiety, - auctoramentum maioris infidelitatis, as one well phraseth it, - and their wisdom culpae suasoria, as Ambrose speaketh. Augustine, writing to such another as this Jonadab, telleth him that the devil desired to be tricked up by him. Diabolus cupit a te ornari.

Ellicott's Commentary on 2 Samuel 13:3

(3) Jonadab, the son of Shimeah.—In 1 Samuel 16:9, Shimeah is called Shammah, and appears there as the third son of Jesse. He had another son, Jonathan, mentioned in 2 Samuel 21:21, as the conqueror of one of the giants. The word subtil is used simply to indicate sagacity and wisdom, whether rightly or wrongly exercised.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on 2 Samuel 13:3

Verse 3. Jonadab was a very subtle man.] And most diabolic advice did he give to his cousin. We talk of the simplicity and excellence of primitive times! "Say not thou what is the cause that the former days were better than these." Take them altogether, we may thank God that they are past, and pray him that they may never return.

Cambridge Bible on 2 Samuel 13:3

3. a friend] This narrative is a strong warning against the danger of evil companions. The clever but unprincipled friend is more likely to provide means for gratifying evil passions than help in resisting them. Jonadab, the son of Shimeah] Shimeah is called Shammah in 1 Samuel 16:9. He had another son Jonathan (ch. 2 Samuel 21:21). subtil] The word means simply wise, and pronounces no judgment on the way in which Jonadab misused his sagacity. Cp. Job 5:13; Jeremiah 4:22.

Barnes' Notes on 2 Samuel 13:3

Shimeah - Called Shamma (marginal reference), was Jesse’s third son. Subtil - literally, wise. The word is generally used in a good sense, but here, and in Job 5:13, it means crafty.

Whedon's Commentary on 2 Samuel 13:3

3. A friend… a very subtile man — “One of those characters,” says Stanley, “who in great houses pride themselves on being acquainted and on dealing with all the secrets of the family.” Compare his
