1 Then the word [message from God, divine communication] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] came [was delivered, arrived] to me, saying [to speak, to command, to proclaim], word study 2 “Now you [a human], son of man [a descendant, a grandson, or a quality], take up [lift, raise] a lament [dirge, a song of grief] for Tyre [a city on the Mediterranean coast, a major Phoenician city]. word study 3 Tell Tyre [situated at the entry of the sea], who dwells [resides, remains] at the gateway [entrance, entry point] to the sea [the Mediterranean, a large body of water], merchant [trader, commerce leader] of the peoples [nations, communities] on many [numerous, various] coasts [islands, coastlands], that this is what the Lord [Adonay, God’s sovereign title] GOD [Yehovah] says: You have said, O Tyre [a major Phoenician city], ‘I am [exist as, have the nature of] perfect [complete, entire] in beauty [loveliness, attractiveness].’ word study 4 Your borders [in the midst of, situated within] are in the heart [center, deepest part] of the seas [large bodies of water, the Mediterranean]; your builders [constructors, establishers] perfected [completed, made whole] your beauty [attractiveness, pleasing appearance]. word study 5 They constructed [built and assembled] all your planking [ship boards, double-boarded ships] with cypress [fir trees, evergreen] from Senir [Mount Hermon, a snow-capped mountain]. And you were filled [made full, replenished] with heavy cargo [exceedingly glorious, very glorious] in the heart [center, midst] of the sea [the Mediterranean, a large body of water]. word study 26 Your oarsmen [rowers, those who navigate] have brought you onto the high [great, vast] seas, but the east [eastern] wind [a blast of air] will shatter [break, destroy] you in the heart [center, midst] of the sea [large body of water, the Mediterranean]. word study 27 Your [substance, or riches] wealth, wares [goods or merchandise], and merchandise [trade or exchange of goods], your sailors [mariners], captains [pilots], and shipwrights [those who strengthen or repair ships], your merchants [dealers in merchandise] and all the warriors [men of war] within you, with all the other people [assembly or multitude] on board, will sink [fall] into the heart [midst or center] of the sea [large body of water] on the day [time or period] of your downfall [ruin or carcass]. word study 28 The countryside [pasture lands, open land, suburbs] will shake [to quake, tremble with fear] when your sailors [pilots, shipmasters, navigators] cry out [with a loud outcry, in distress, with a shriek]. word study 29 All [every single one, without exception] who handle [to capture, grasp] the oars [used for rowing] will abandon [leave, forsake] their ships [fleet, vessels]. The sailors [mariners, seafarers] and all [everything, the entire group] the captains [pilots, navigators] of the sea [the Mediterranean, a large body of water] will stand [to stand, be stationary] on the shore [the land, the ground]. word study 30 They will raise their voices [with a loud voice, and cry out] for you and cry out bitterly [with emotional pain]. They will weep [cry out in agony, shed tears] over you with anguish [bitterness, deep sorrow] of soul [the essence of a person, living being] and bitter [intensely painful, unpleasant] mourning [lamentation, intense grief]. word study 32 As they wail [with loud lamentation] and mourn [express deep sorrow] over you, they will take up a lament [dirge, song of grief] for you: ‘Who [what city] was ever like Tyre [a major Phoenician city], silenced [destroyed, brought to an end] in the middle [center] of the sea [a large body of water]? word study 33 When your wares [goods, merchandise] went out to sea [the Mediterranean, a large body of water], you satisfied [filled, made full] many [numerous, abundant] nations [peoples, countries]. You enriched [made rich, prospered] the kings [rulers, monarchs] of the earth [land, world] with your abundant [great, plentiful] wealth [substance, riches] and merchandise [trade, commerce]. word study 34 Now you are shattered [broken, ruptured] by the seas [large bodies of water, the Mediterranean] in the depths [profound, innermost] of the waters [liquid, source of refreshment]; your merchandise [goods, trade, exchange] and the people [assembly, congregation] among you have gone down [fallen, been defeated] with you. word study 35 All [the inhabitants of the isles, everyone] the people of the coastlands [islands, sea-lands] are appalled [astonished, horrified] over you. Their kings [royal persons, rulers] shudder [are sore afraid, horrified] with fear [extreme fear, terror]; their faces [presence, countenance] are contorted [troubled, twisted with fear]. word study 36 Those who [travel around for] trade [among the peoples, doing business] among the nations [or peoples, a multitude of ethnic groups] hiss [whistle, expressing scorn] at you; you have come to a [dreadful, terrible] horrible end [becoming a terror, a thing of fear] and will be [exist no more, nothing] no more [till forever, to the age].’” word study
