1 “And I [as for me, personally], in the first [initial, one] year of Darius [the king, ruler] the Mede [from Media, a neighboring land], stood up [to take a strong position, to support] to strengthen [to make firm, to encourage] and protect [to provide security, to defend] him [Michael, a spiritual leader]. word study 2 Now then [at this time, currently], I will tell you the truth [faithfulness, stability]: Three more kings [royal rulers, monarchs] will arise [stand up, come to power] in Persia [the ancient country of Persia], and then a fourth, who will be far richer [more wealthy, prosperous] than all the others [all of them, everyone else]. By the power [strength, ability] of his wealth [riches, abundance], he will stir up [rouse, incite] everyone [all, the whole kingdom] against the kingdom [royal power, dominion] of Greece [the country of Greece, Javan]. word study 3 Then a mighty [strong, powerful] king [ruler, monarch] will arise [stand up, come to power], who will rule [have dominion, reign] with great [extensive, large] authority [power, dominion] and do [act, accomplish] as he pleases [according to his will, as he desires]. word study 4 But as soon as he is established [stands strong, comes to power], his kingdom [royal authority, dominion] will be broken up [shattered, torn apart] and parceled out [divided, scattered] toward the four winds of heaven [the sky, the spiritual realm]. It will not go to his descendants [posterity, offspring], nor will it have the authority [power, dominion] with which he ruled [exercised sovereignty], because his kingdom [royal power, reign] will be uprooted [torn away, overthrown] and given to others [those who are different, beside these]. word study 5 The king [ruler, monarch] of the South [Negeb, southern district] will grow strong [be strengthened, courageous], but one of his commanders [princes, captains] will grow even stronger [prevail, conquer] and will rule [have dominion, authority] his own kingdom [domain, territory] with great [large, abundant] authority [power, leadership]. word study 6 After some years [at the end of years, several years later] they will form an alliance [join themselves together, make an agreement], and the daughter [a female child, a woman] of the king [a royal person, a monarch] of the South [the southern district, Negeb] will go [come, approach] to the king [a royal person, a monarch] of the North [the northern region, Zaphon] to seal [make, do] the agreement [an upright thing, a peace treaty]. But his daughter [she, the woman] will not retain [keep, hold] her position of power [the strength of her arm, her influence], nor will his strength [power, might] endure [stand, continue]. At that time [in these times, during this period] she will be given up [delivered, betrayed], along with her royal escort [those who brought her, her attendants] and her father [he who begat her, her parent] and the one who supported her [he who strengthened her, her helper]. word study 7 But one [a new king] from her family line will rise up [stand strong, take his place] in his place, come [approach, march] against the army [the military forces, Helech] of the king [the ruler, Molech] of the North [Zaphon, the northern region], and enter [come into, invade] his fortress [stronghold, security, a fortified place], fighting [waging war, dealing against] and prevailing [overcoming, being strong, to strengthen]. word study 8 He will take even their gods [idols, false deities] captive to Egypt, with their metal images [molten, man-made] and their precious vessels [desirable, valuable] of silver [wealth, treasure] and gold [riches, splendor]. For some years [a period of time, a season] he will stay away [refrain, abstain] from the king of the North [the ruler, sovereign], word study 9 who will invade [march into, come into the realm of] the realm [kingdom, royal power] of the king [ruler, monarch] of the South [Negeb, southern district] and then return [turn back, go back] to his own land [earth, territory, soil]. word study 10 But his sons [descendants, offspring] will stir up [provoke, contend] strife and assemble [gather, collect] a great army [multitude of great forces], which will advance [come, overflow] forcefully [like a flood, with haste], sweeping through [overflowing, passing through] like a flood, and will again carry [return, wage war] the battle [war, conflict] as far as [until, to] his fortress [stronghold, place of security]. word study 11 In a rage [with intense anger, being provoked], the king [ruler, monarch] of the South [Negeb, southern district] will march out [come forth, go out] to fight [engage in battle, wage war] the king [ruler, monarch] of the North [Zaphon, northern region], who will raise [assemble, gather] a large [great, multitude] army [crowd, multitude], but it will be delivered [given, handed over] into the hand [power, control] of his enemy [opponent, adversary]. word study 12 When the army [multitude, large crowd] is carried off, the king of the South will be proud [exalted, lifted up] in heart [the innermost part of a person, including mind, will, and emotions] and will cast down [cause to fall, defeat] tens of thousands [myriads, a very large number], but he will not [never] triumph [prevail, be strong]. word study 13 For the king [ruler, monarch] of the North [Zaphon, a direction or location] will raise [gather, assemble] another army [multitude, crowd], larger [greater, more numerous] than the first [primary, initial], and after some years [a period of time, a season] he will advance [march, come forth] with a great [powerful, mighty] army [force, military] and many [abundant, plentiful] supplies [riches, possessions]. word study 14 In those times [at that moment, during that period] many [a large number, numerous] will rise up [stand against, rebel] against the king [ruler, monarch] of the South [Negeb, southern region]. Violent ones [robbers, destroyers] among your own people [nation, community] will exalt [lift themselves up, elevate] themselves in fulfillment [to establish, make happen] of the vision [revelation, prophecy], but they will fail [stumble, be defeated]. word study 15 Then the king [ruler, monarch] of the North [Zaphon, the northern region] will come [approach, arrive], build up [cast up, pour out] a siege ramp [mound, earthwork], and capture [seize, take] a fortified city [strong, well-armed town]. The forces [arms, strength] of the South [Negeb, the southern district] will not stand [be able to resist, withstand]; even their best [choicest, most elite] troops [people, army] will not be able to resist [withstand, stand]. word study 16 The invader [who comes against him] will do as he pleases [according to his own will], and no one will stand [be able to keep their position] against him. He will establish [take up his position] himself in the Beautiful Land [the glorious land, a land of splendor], with destruction [the power to destroy, to end] in his hand [by his power, under his control]. word study 17 He will resolve [determine, set his face] to come with the strength [power, authority] of his whole kingdom, and will reach an agreement [make a peace treaty, upright conditions] with the king of the South [the ruler of Egypt]. He will give him a daughter [a woman, the daughter of women] in marriage [to corrupt her, to destroy the kingdom] in order to overthrow [ruin, destroy] the kingdom, but his plan [scheme, intention] will not succeed [stand, be established] or help him. word study 18 Then he will turn [his attention, face] his face [presence, countenance] to the coastlands [islands, regions by the sea] and capture [seize, take control of] many [a large number, numerous] of them. But a commander [chief, leader] will put an end [cause to cease, stop] to his reproach [shame, scorn] and will turn [return, bring back] it back upon him [against him, to his own harm]. word study 19 After this, he will turn back [return, come again] toward the fortresses [strongholds, security] of his own land [territory, country], but he will stumble [trip, lose balance] and fall [be defeated, come to an end] and be no more [not be found, perish]. word study 20 In his place [as a successor, to take his position] one will arise [stand up, take the throne] who will send out [cause to pass through, appoint] a tax collector [exactor, one who raises taxes] for the glory [honor, splendor] of the kingdom [royal power, dominion]; but within a few days [a short time, brief period] he will be destroyed [broken, shattered], though not in anger [rage, fierce indignation] or in battle [war, conflict]. word study 21 In his place [as his successor, following him] a despicable [vile, contemptible] person will arise [stand up, take his position]; royal honors [the honor of the kingdom, kingly majesty] will not be given to him [not bestowed upon him, withheld from him], but he will come [approach, arrive] in a time of peace [quietly, in a state of ease] and seize [obtain, take control of] the kingdom [royal power, dominion] by intrigue [flatteries, smooth words, deception]. word study 22 Then a flood [of powerful forces, overwhelming event] of forces [armies, military strength] will be swept away [overflowed, completely taken away] before him and destroyed [broken, shattered], along with a prince [leader, commander] of the covenant [agreement, promise]. word study 23 After an alliance [a treaty, a covenant] is made with him, he will act deceitfully [with cunning, in a deceitful manner]; for he will rise [come up, ascend] to power [become strong, gain authority] with only a few [a small, little] people [a nation, a Gentile group]. word study 24 In a time [period, season] of peace [quietness, ease], he will invade [enter peacefully, come upon] the richest [fattest, most fertile] provinces [regions, districts] and do [make, accomplish] what his fathers [ancestors, forefathers] and forefathers [ancestors] never did [have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers]. He will lavish [scatter, distribute] plunder [spoils, booty], loot [spoil], and wealth [property, possessions] on his followers [those who follow him], and he will plot [devise, plan] against the strongholds [fortified places, fortresses]—but only for [until, as far as] a time [season, occasion]. word study 25 And with a large [great, mighty] army he will stir up [rouse, awaken] his power [strength, might] and his courage [heart, inner strength] against the king [ruler, monarch] of the South [Negeb, southern district], who will mobilize [stir up, gather] a very large [exceedingly great, numerous] and powerful [mighty, strong] army but will not withstand [stand, resist] the plots [devices, schemes] devised [planned, thought out] against him. word study 26 Those who eat [consume, devour] from his provisions [choice food, delicacies] will seek to destroy [break, shatter] him; his army [military strength, power] will be swept away [overflow, gush forth], and many [a great number, a multitude] will fall [be defeated] slain [killed, profaned]. word study 27 And the two [a pair, dual] kings, with their hearts [the innermost part of a person, including mind, will, and emotions] bent on evil [mischief, wickedness], will speak lies [falsehoods, deceptions] at the same [one, united] table, but to no avail [without success, unprofitably], for still [yet, continuing] the end [conclusion, extremity] will come at the appointed [set, designated] time [meeting, sacred season]. word study 28 The king of the North will return [to his own country, with all the wealth he has looted] to his land [territory, region] with great [abundant, vast] wealth [property, riches], but his heart [innermost being, mind] will be set against [in opposition to, hostile towards] the holy [set-apart, sacred] covenant [promise, agreement]; so he will do [accomplish, carry out] damage [exploits, harm] and return [turn back, come back] to his own land [country, territory]. word study 29 At the appointed time [meeting, sacred season] he will invade [come into, approach] the South [Negeb, southern district] again, but this time [latter time, later period] will not be like [as, similar to] the first [primary, initial]. word study 30 Ships [vessels, naval forces] of Kittim [Cyprus, a western island] will come against him, and he will lose heart [be disheartened, grieved]. Then he will turn back [return, retreat] and rage [be indignant, furious] against the holy [set-apart, sacred] covenant [agreement, promise] and do damage [harm, violence]. So he will return [come back, reverse course] and show favor [have regard, be united] to those who forsake [abandon, relinquish] the holy [sacred, divine] covenant [treaty, alliance]. word study 31 His forces [armies, strong ones] will rise up and desecrate [profane, pollute] the temple fortress [sanctuary of strength, holy place]. They will abolish [take away, remove] the daily [continual, regular] sacrifice and set up [place, establish] the abomination [something disgusting, idolatry] of desolation [that maketh desolate, causing devastation]. word study 32 With [smooth and deceitful] flattery he will corrupt [lead astray, pollute] those who [wickedly, unfaithfully] violate [break, abandon] the covenant [promise, agreement], but the people [nation, community] who know [are intimately acquainted with, understand] their God [Elohim, the supreme Lord] will firmly [with strength, courageously] resist [stand against, oppose] him. word study 33 Those with insight [having spiritual understanding, wise leaders] will instruct many [a large number, numerous people], though for a time [a period, many days] they will fall [stumble, be overthrown] by sword [cutting instrument, weapon] or flame [fire, burning], or be captured [taken away, exiled] or plundered [robbed, taken by force, spoils of war]. word study 34 Now when they fall [stumble, lose their balance], they will be granted a little [small, limited] help [assistance, aid], but many [a large number, numerous] will join them [cleave to, attach themselves] insincerely [with flatteries, deceitfully]. word study 35 Some of the wise [understanding, prudent ones] will fall [stumble, be refined], so that they may be refined [tried], purified [made clean, cleansed], and made spotless [whitened, purified] until the time [end, conclusion] of the end [final extremity, last event], for it will still [yet, continue to] come at the appointed [set, designated] time [season, occasion]. word study 36 Then the king [ruler, monarch] will do as he pleases [according to his will, as he desires] and will exalt [lift himself up, elevate] and magnify [make great, glorify] himself above every god [false deity, idol], and he will speak [declare, proclaim] monstrous [marvelous, wonderful] things against the God [Elohim, supreme Creator] of gods [the one true God, divine authority]. He will be successful [prosper, thrive] until the time [appointed season, designated moment] of wrath [indignation, anger] is completed [finished, fulfilled], for what has been decreed [determined, decided] must be accomplished [fulfilled, carried out]. word study 37 He will show no regard [have no respect, ignore] for the gods [divine beings, deities] of his fathers [ancestors, forefathers], nor for the one [God, deity] desired [loved, cherished] by women [females, wives], nor for any other god [deity, idol], because he will magnify [exalt, elevate] himself [his own power, authority] above [over, beyond] them all [everything, everyone]. word study 38 And in their place, he will honor [worship, give reverence to] a god [Eloah, a deity] of fortresses [security, strongholds]—a god [unknown, foreign] his fathers [ancestors, forefathers] did not know [recognize, acknowledge]—with gold [valuable metal], silver [precious commodity], precious stones [jewels, treasures], and riches [wealth, desirable things]. word study 39 He will attack the strongest [most secure, fortified] fortresses [strongholds, places of security] with the help of a foreign [strange, heathen] god [deity, idol] and will greatly honor [increase with glory, exalt] those who acknowledge [recognize, accept] him, making them rulers [leaders, captains] over many [a multitude, a large number] and distributing the land [earth, territory] for a price [reward, payment]. word study 40 At the [appointed, prefixed] time of the end [conclusion, finality], the king of the South [Negeb, southern district] will engage him in battle [contend, fight], but the king of the North [Zaphon, northern direction] will storm out [shudder, be extremely afraid] against him with chariots [vehicles, cavalry], horsemen [cavalry soldiers], and many [numerous, abundant] ships [vessels, fleet], invading [entering, overflowing] many countries [lands, territories] and sweeping through them like a flood [overflowing, gushing]. word study 41 He will also invade [enter and conquer] the Beautiful Land [glorious land, pleasant land], and many [tens of thousands, numerous] countries will fall [be overthrown, stumble]. But these will be delivered [escape, saved] from his hand [power, control]: Edom [the region of Esau’s descendants], Moab [the land of Lot’s descendants], and the leaders [chief, first part] of the Ammonites [the sons of Ammon]. word study 42 He will extend [stretch forth, send out] his power [hand] over many countries [lands, territories], and not even [none, no] the land [earth, region] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa] will escape [be a survivor, experience deliverance]. word study 43 He will gain control [have power over, rule] of the treasures [hidden stores, riches] of gold [a valuable metal] and silver [precious, used for payment] and over all [everything, the entirety] the riches [precious things, desirable treasures] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa], and the Libyans [people from interior Africa] and Cushites [Ethiopians, descendants of Cush] will also submit [be at his steps, follow his lead] to him. word study 44 But news [tidings, reports] from the east [the direction of the sunrise] and the north [Zaphon, a location or direction] will alarm [trouble, dismay] him, and he will go out [come out, leave a place] with great [intense, large] fury [rage, intense anger] to destroy [annihilate, devastate] many [a large number, numerous] and devote [utterly destroy, sweep away] them to destruction [desolation, devastation]. word study 45 He will pitch [plant, establish] his royal [luxurious, grand] tents [tabernacles, palaces] between [in the midst of] the sea [the Mediterranean, a large body of water] and the beautiful [glorious, lovely] holy [set-apart, sacred] mountain [hill], but he will meet [come to, arrive at] his end [conclusion, extremity] with no one [none, nothing] to help [assist, aid] him. word study
