Walter A. Henrichsen

Walter Albert Henrichsen (April 23, 1934 – September 29, 2016) was an American preacher, author, and discipleship leader whose work with The Navigators and beyond shaped modern evangelical approaches to mentoring and spiritual growth. Born in Berkeley, California, to Walter Sr. and Dorothy Henrichsen, he was the second of four children in a family that moved frequently due to his father’s naval career. Raised in the Reformed Church of America, Walt met Christ at 19 during a Billy Graham Crusade follow-up in 1953, sparking a lifelong passion for disciple-making. He graduated from Central College in Iowa and earned a Master of Divinity from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, where he was ordained. Henrichsen’s ministry began with The Navigators in 1960, where he met his wife, Leette Dillon, at Maranatha Bible Camp in Nebraska; they married in 1962 after a long-distance engagement. Rising through roles like area and regional director, assistant to the president, and deputy director for the Pacific Area Navigators, he spent decades equipping believers. In 1977, he shifted focus to ministering among business and professional men, founding Leadership Foundation in San Diego, California, to help integrate faith with vocation. His book Disciples Are Made Not Born (1974) became a cornerstone text, selling over 300,000 copies and outlining a practical, biblical model for discipleship that influenced countless Christians.
