Sam Shamoun

Sam Shamoun (N/A–) is an Assyrian-American Christian apologist, evangelist, and preacher known for his confrontational style and extensive knowledge of the Bible and Islamic texts, particularly in debates with Muslim scholars. Born in Kuwait to an Assyrian family rooted in the Church of the East (Nestorian Church), Shamoun moved to the United States at a young age, settling in Chicago, Illinois. His early exposure to religious challenges from Muslims sparked a deep dive into scripture, leading him to become a self-taught theologian without formal seminary training. From age six, he began street preaching with a friend, laying the foundation for a lifelong ministry focused on defending Christianity and critiquing Islam. Shamoun rose to prominence in the late 1990s through his contributions to Answering Islam, a pioneering website for Christian outreach to Muslims, where he became a chief writer. His debates, such as a notable 2000 encounter with Muslim apologist Shabir Ally at the University of Iowa, showcased his ability to cite chapter and verse from both the Bible and Quran with remarkable speed, earning him a reputation as a formidable debater. He later launched a YouTube channel, expanding his reach with live streams and discussions that have reportedly converted thousands of Muslims to Christianity. Based in Skokie, Illinois, Shamoun, once married to Michelle (divorced in 2017, with two children), remains a polarizing figure—admired for his zeal and scholarship, yet criticized for his aggressive rhetoric—continuing his mission to proclaim Christ’s truth.
