The Key Word — רָגַל, ra.Galgenerated
The verb רָגַל (ragal) primarily means to spy or to go about, but it also carries the connotation of slandering or gossiping about someone. In this context, it refers to the act of speaking ill of others, which is contrary to the behavior of the righteous.
This word is used to describe a malicious act of spreading falsehoods, which is condemned in the psalm. The use of this verb highlights the importance of guarding one's speech and maintaining integrity in relationships.
How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated
This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.
Sentence Structuregenerated
The verse contains a series of clauses that describe the actions that a righteous person does not engage in. The finite verb רָגַל governs the first clause, setting the tone for the negative actions that follow.
The structure emphasizes a list of prohibitions, with each clause beginning with לֹא (lo'), indicating what the righteous person does not do, thus creating a clear moral framework.
Septuagint Backgroundgenerated
In the Septuagint, רָגַל is rendered as ἐδόλωσεν, which means 'to deceive' or 'to ensnare.' This choice suggests a broader interpretation of the act of slander, emphasizing its deceitful nature.
The translation choice in the Septuagint indicates a concern not just with the act of slander, but with its potential to harm and entrap others, aligning with the moral teachings of the psalm.

Very expressive of those who go about from house to house carrying tittle- tattle. (Comp. 1 Timothy 5:13.) Reproach.—The Hebrew word has a striking derivation. Properly, the stripping of the trees of autumn fruit; so, stripping honour and reputation from a person. Two different words are in the Hebrew for “neighbour.” Translate, “Who does no ill to his friend, nor carries a reproach against his neighbour.” The marginal receiveth, or endureth, is quite against the context.

ev'-'-l, e'-vil ra`; poneros, @kakos, @kakon:
In the Bible it is represented as moral and physical. We choose to discuss the subject under these heads. Many of the evils that come upon men have not been intended by those who suffer for them. Disease, individual and national calamity, drought, scarcity of food, may not always be charged to the account of intentional wrong. Many times the innocent suffer with, and even for, the guilty. In such cases, only physical evil is apparent. Even when the suffering has been occasioned by sin or dereliction of duty, whether the wrong is active or passive, many, perhaps the majority of those who are injured, are not accountable in any way for the ills which come upon them. Neither is God the author of moral evil. "God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man" (Jas 1:13).
