Context — Nehemiah Confronts the Peoplegenerated
Nehemiah 13:27 highlights Nehemiah's concern over the people's actions after returning from exile. He draws a parallel to King Solomon, who was led astray by foreign wives, and warns that they too are committing a grave sin by marrying foreign women. This reflects a broader theme in the Old Testament regarding the dangers of intermarriage with foreign nations and the importance of faithfulness to God.

The Key Word — נָכְרִיּוֹת, na.khe.ri.Yotgenerated
The Hebrew word נָכְרִי (nokriy) means foreign or alien, and it is used here to describe women who are not from Israel. This term conveys a sense of strangeness or unfamiliarity, indicating that these marriages could lead the people away from their covenant with God.
In this context, marrying foreign women is associated with acting unfaithfully against God, as it often led to the worship of foreign gods and the abandonment of Israel's unique relationship with Yahweh.
How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated
Where others part company with the BSB they part company over a real fork in the lexicon, not over style. Strange (KJV, GNV) takes the word in a different nuance, emphasizing the unfamiliarity of the women.
Sentence Structuregenerated
The main verb הֲנִשְׁמַ֗ע (ha.nishma'), is it heard, governs the entire sentence, with several phrases describing what is being heard. The structure emphasizes the seriousness of the accusation against the people.
The sentence is complex, with clauses that include actions they are committing, the nature of the evil, and the consequences of their unfaithfulness, all contributing to the weight of Nehemiah's warning.
Septuagint Backgroundgenerated
The Septuagint translates נָכְרִי as ἀλλοτρίας (allotrias), meaning 'of others' or 'foreign.' This choice highlights the separation and distinction between the people of Israel and those outside their covenant community.
This translation reflects a broader interpretation of the dangers of intermarriage, emphasizing not just the foreignness but the potential spiritual consequences of such unions.
In plain words — the whole versegenerated
Nehemiah 13:27 shows Nehemiah warning the people about their marriages to foreign women, which he sees as a serious sin against God. He reminds them of King Solomon's downfall due to similar actions, urging them to remain faithful to their covenant with God.
Frequently Asked Questionsgenerated
Nehemiah is referring to women who are not from Israel, whose marriages to Israelite men could lead them away from the worship of Yahweh.
Marrying foreign women is seen as a sin because it often leads to the worship of foreign gods and a break in the covenant relationship with God.
Nehemiah uses King Solomon's example to illustrate the dangers of intermarriage, as Solomon's foreign wives led him into sin and idolatry.
Nehemiah's question emphasizes the seriousness of the people's actions and serves as a call to repentance and faithfulness to God.

ev'-'-l, e'-vil ra`; poneros, @kakos, @kakon:
In the Bible it is represented as moral and physical. We choose to discuss the subject under these heads. Many of the evils that come upon men have not been intended by those who suffer for them. Disease, individual and national calamity, drought, scarcity of food, may not always be charged to the account of intentional wrong. Many times the innocent suffer with, and even for, the guilty. In such cases, only physical evil is apparent. Even when the suffering has been occasioned by sin or dereliction of duty, whether the wrong is active or passive, many, perhaps the majority of those who are injured, are not accountable in any way for the ills which come upon them. Neither is God the author of moral evil. "God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man" (Jas 1:13).
