Context — The Laws of the Jubilee Yeargenerated
Leviticus 25:12 is part of a series of laws outlining the significance of the Jubilee year, which occurs every fifty years. This year is set apart for rest and restoration, where debts are forgiven, and land is returned to its original owners. The Israelites are instructed to observe this year with holiness and to partake only of the crops that grow naturally without cultivation.

The Key Word — יוֹבֵל, yo.Velgenerated
The word יוֹבֵל (yo.Vel) signifies both the trumpet sound that heralds the Jubilee and the year itself. It is derived from a root meaning continuous sound, emphasizing the celebration associated with the Jubilee.
In this verse, it indicates that the year is marked by a special holiness, setting it apart from other years. The Jubilee is a time for rest and restoration, and the use of this term underscores the importance of the trumpet's call in announcing this sacred time.
How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated
This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.
Sentence Structuregenerated
The main verb is תִּהְיֶ֣ה (it will be), which governs the subject הִ֔וא (it) and the predicate קֹ֖דֶשׁ (a holy thing). The structure emphasizes the declaration of the Jubilee's holiness.
The sentence includes a prepositional phrase indicating the source of food, which is מִן־ הַ֨שָּׂדֶ֔ה (from the field), and a verb phrase that describes the action of eating, תֹּאכְל֖וּ (you will eat), creating a clear directive.
Septuagint Backgroundgenerated
The Septuagint translates יוֹבֵל as ἀφέσεως, which emphasizes the concept of release or freedom associated with the Jubilee. This choice reflects a broader interpretation of the Jubilee's significance beyond just the agricultural aspect.
The LXX does not preserve the same word order as the Hebrew, but it captures the essence of the Jubilee as a time of liberation and holiness.
In plain words — the whole versegenerated
Leviticus 25:12 explains that the Jubilee year is a special time of holiness. During this year, the Israelites are instructed to eat only the crops that grow naturally from the field, emphasizing rest and divine provision.
Frequently Asked Questionsgenerated

Jubilee
A joyful shout or clangour of trumpets, the name of the great semi-centennial festival of the Hebrews. It lasted for a year. During this year the land was to be fallow, and the Israelites were only permitted to gather the spontaneous produce of the fields (Lev. 25:11, 12). All landed property during that year reverted to its original owner (13-34; 27:16-24), and all who were slaves were set free (25:39-54), and all debts were remitted.
The return of the jubilee year was proclaimed by a blast of trumpets which sounded throughout the land. There is no record in Scripture of the actual observance of this festival, but there are numerous allusions (Isa. 5:7, 8, 9, 10; 61:1, 2; Ezek. 7:12, 13;
A Hebrew festival, celebrated in every fiftieth year, which of course occurred after seven weeks of years, or seven times seven years, Le 25:10. Its name Jubilee, sounding or flowing, was significant of the joyful trumpet-peals that announced its arrival. During this year no one sowed or reaped; but all were satisfied with what the earth and the trees produced spontaneously. Each resumed possession of his inheritance, whether it were sold, mortgaged, or otherwise alienated; and Hebrew servants of every description were set free, with their wives an children, Le 25:1-55. The first nine days were spent in festivities, during which no one worked, and every one wore a crown on his head. On the tenth day, which was the day of solemn expiation, the Sanhedrin ordered the trumpets to…
