The Key Word בֵּן, u.ve.Neigenerated

The word בֵּן (ben) means 'son' or 'male child' and signifies a descendant. It can refer to a grandson or even a member of a tribe, emphasizing familial relationships and inheritance. The parsing indicates it is a common masculine noun in the plural form, showing that it refers to multiple sons.

In this verse, בֵּן is used to denote the sons of Simeon, illustrating the importance of lineage in the context of the Israelite tribes. The word's root meaning 'to build' suggests a connection to family heritage and the establishment of future generations.

How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated

This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.

Sentence Structuregenerated

The finite verb is absent in this genealogical listing, which is structured as a series of noun phrases. The main subject is וּבְנֵ֣י שִׁמְע֗וֹן (and the sons of Simeon), followed by a list of names.

The structure emphasizes the names of Simeon's sons, each presented as a separate noun phrase. This format is typical in genealogies, where the focus is on lineage rather than action.

Septuagint Backgroundgenerated

The Septuagint uses υἱοὶ (huioi) to translate בֵּן, which also means 'sons'. This choice aligns closely with the Hebrew meaning, preserving the emphasis on familial descent.

The translation reflects a direct correspondence, maintaining the genealogical focus present in the Hebrew text.

The four witnesses to this verse — Masoretic, Septuagint, Samaritan, Qumran

The Masoretic Text lists the sons of Simeon as Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. The Septuagint agrees with the Masoretic Text in terms of the names, maintaining the same order and content, though it presents them differently in its own Greek structure. The Samaritan Pentateuch differs from the Masoretic Text in two names: it uses 'אחד' (Aḥad) instead of 'אֹהַד' (Ohad) and 'צהר' (Tsohar) instead of 'צֹ֑חַר' (Zohar). The Dead Sea Scrolls, specifically the Mas1 manuscript, also show some differences with 'אוהד' (Ohad) and 'וצוחר' (Tsohar) appearing in a partially restored form, indicating that the text has been edited for clarity. Overall, while the core names are consistent across the witnesses, there are notable variations in the specific names used in the Samaritan Pentateuch and the Dead Sea Scrolls.

In the Norman period, however, "of" was taken to represent the French de (a use well developed by the time of Chaucer), and in the Elizabethan period both senses of "of" were in common use. But after about 1600 the later force of the word became predominant, and in the earlier sense (which is now practically obsolete) it was replaced by other prepositions. In consequence the King James Version (and in some cases the Revised Version (British and American)) contains many uses of "of" that are no longer familiar--most of them, to be sure, causing no difficulty, but there still being a few responsible for real obscurities.

Simeon

Hearing. (1.) The second son of Jacob by Leah (Gen. 29:33). He was associated with Levi in the terrible act of vengeance against Hamor and the Shechemites (34:25, 26). He was detained by Joseph in Egypt as a hostage (42:24). His father, when dying, pronounced a malediction against him (49:5-7). The words in the Authorized Version (49:6), “they digged down a wall,” ought to be, as correctly rendered in the Revised Version, “they houghed an ox.”

(2.) An aged saint who visited the temple when Jesus was being presented before the Lord, and uttered lofty words of thankgiving and of prophecy (Luke 2:29-35).

(3.) One of the ancestors of Joseph (Luke 3:30).

Woman

Was “taken out of man” (Gen. 2:23), and therefore the man has the preeminence. “The head of the woman is the man;” but yet honour is to be shown to the wife, “as unto the weaker vessel” (1 Cor. 11:3, 8, 9; 1 Pet. 3:7). Several women are mentioned in Scripture as having been endowed with prophetic gifts, as Miriam (Ex. 15:20), Deborah (Judg. 4:4, 5), Huldah (2 Kings 22:14), Noadiah (Neh. 6:14), Anna (Luke 2:36, 37), and the daughters of Philip the evangelist…

Is spoken of in Scripture as the beloved and honored companion and helpmeet, not the servant, of man, Ge 2:23,24, created as the necessary completion of man, Ge 3:16 1Co 11:3,8,9 14:34,35 1Ti 2:11-14, yet specially qualified for that sphere, and as necessary in it as man in his. The Bible thus raised the Jewish woman high above the woman of heathenism; and the Old Testament contains some of the finest portraitures of female character. But still greater is the contrast between the women of heathenism and…
