And I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed, “O, Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant of loving devotion to those who love Him and keep His commandments, we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly and rebelled. We have turned away from Your commandments and ordinances. We have not listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, leaders, and fathers, and to all the people of the land. To You, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but this day we are covered with shame—the men of Judah, the people of Jerusalem, and all Israel near and far, in all the countries to which You have driven us because of our unfaithfulness to You. O LORD, we are covered with shame—our kings, our leaders, and our fathers—because we have sinned against You. To the Lord our God belong compassion and forgiveness, even though we have rebelled against Him and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God to walk in His laws, which He set before us through His servants the prophets. All Israel has transgressed Your law and turned away, refusing to obey Your voice; so the oath and the curse written in the Law of Moses the servant of God has been poured out on us, because we have sinned against You. You have carried out the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing upon us a great disaster. For under all of heaven, nothing has ever been done like what has been done to Jerusalem. Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us, yet we have not sought the favor of the LORD our God by turning from our iniquities and giving attention to Your truth. Therefore the LORD has kept the calamity in store and brought it upon us. For the LORD our God is righteous in all He does; yet we have not obeyed His voice. Now, O Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and who made for Yourself a name renowned to this day, we have sinned; we have acted wickedly. O Lord, in keeping with all Your righteous acts, I pray that Your anger and wrath may turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people are a reproach to all around us. So now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of Your servant. For Your sake, O Lord, cause Your face to shine upon Your desolate sanctuary. Incline Your ear, O my God, and hear; open Your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears Your name. For we are not presenting our petitions before You because of our righteous acts, but because of Your great compassion. O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For Your sake, O my God, do not delay, because Your city and Your people bear Your name.”

Jeremiah 29:12 Summary

[This verse, Jeremiah 29:12, tells us that when we call upon God and pray to Him, He will listen to us. This is a wonderful promise that shows how much God cares about us and wants to be involved in our lives. By praying and seeking God, we can develop a deeper relationship with Him and find comfort in His presence.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to call upon God and pray to Him?

To call upon God and pray to Him means to humbly and sincerely communicate with Him, seeking a relationship and asking for His guidance and help, as seen in Jeremiah 29:12 and also in Psalm 145:18, which says God is near to all who call on Him in truth.

How can we be sure God will listen to us?

We can be sure God will listen to us because He promises to do so in Jeremiah 29:12, and this is reinforced in other verses such as Psalm 34:15, which says the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and His ears are attentive to their cry.

Is this promise only for the Israelites in the Bible?

While Jeremiah 29:12 was initially spoken to the Israelites, the principle of God listening to those who call upon Him is a universal promise that applies to all believers, as seen in verses like Romans 10:13 and Acts 2:21, which quote Joel 2:32, saying everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

How does this relate to our daily lives as Christians?

This verse encourages us to develop a personal and intimate relationship with God, where we regularly communicate with Him through prayer, and trust that He hears us, which is a fundamental aspect of the Christian life, as emphasized in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to pray without ceasing.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways you can deepen your prayer life to call upon God more sincerely?
  2. How does the promise of God listening to you affect your approach to challenges and difficulties in life?
  3. In what ways can you apply the principle of seeking God with all your heart, as mentioned in the surrounding verses, to your own spiritual journey?
  4. What does it mean to you personally that God is always ready to listen, and how can you practically live out this truth every day?

Gill's Exposition on Jeremiah 29:12

Then shall ye call upon me,.... When the expected end is about to be given; when God intends and is about to bestow a mercy, he gives his people a spirit of prayer to ask for it; and even the promise

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Jeremiah 29:12

Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. Ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you - fulfilled Daniel 9:3, etc.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Jeremiah 29:12

I will not only give you a temporal salvation and deliverance, and bring you into your own land, but you shall go thither with new hearts; you shall worship idols no more, but you shall worship me, and be serious and diligent in your addresses and applications to me, and I will listen to you in those applications.

Trapp's Commentary on Jeremiah 29:12

Jeremiah 29:12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.Ver. 12. Then shall ye call upon me.] With mind and mouth, with spirit and speech, as Daniel did, and as but few others did, during the captivity, as is confessed. And go and pray unto me.] Go into your closets, or other oratories, where you shall pour out your hearts unto me. And I will hearken unto you.] Which shall be a surer seal of my love than your return from Babylon.

Ellicott's Commentary on Jeremiah 29:12

(12, 13) Then shall ye call upon me . . .—The words need no comment, but they cannot be passed over without dwelling on the infinite tenderness which they manifest in the prophet’s soul, the reflex of a like tenderness in the mind of God, from whom he gives the message. It is the anticipation of the like message from the lips of Christ, “He that seeketh findeth, and to him that knocketh it shall be opened” (Matthew 7:8). As they stand, the words are an echo of Deu 4:29-30, as Jeremiah 29:14 is of Deu 30:3-5.

Cambridge Bible on Jeremiah 29:12

12. The MT. is awkward, as it stands. The LXX have merely “and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.”

Whedon's Commentary on Jeremiah 29:12

12. Go and pray — The simple and obvious meaning is the true one. Go to the place of prayer, suggesting an organized religious life. Devout souls will be sure to find places of holy convocation.
