16I will pronounce My judgments against them for all their wickedness, because they have forsaken Me, and they have burned incense to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands. 17Get yourself ready. Stand up and tell them everything that I command you. Do not be intimidated by them, or I will terrify you before them.Cross References

Jeremiah 1:15 Summary
In Jeremiah 1:15, God is saying that He will bring the armies of the north to attack Jerusalem, which is a symbol of His judgment against the people for their sins. This is similar to what is described in Jeremiah 25:9 and Jeremiah 43:10, where God uses other nations to punish His people for their disobedience. Just like in the days of Jeremiah, God still calls us to repentance and faith in Him today, as seen in Acts 2:38 and 1 John 1:9. As believers, we can learn from this verse that God is a holy and just God who will not tolerate sin, but He is also a God of love and mercy who desires our repentance and restoration, as promised in 2 Chronicles 7:14.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the 'north' refer to in Jeremiah 1:15?
The 'north' in Jeremiah 1:15 likely refers to the Babylonian Empire, which was located north of Judah, as indicated in Jeremiah 1:13-14, where a boiling pot is seen tilting toward Judah from the north, symbolizing the impending disaster from the Babylonians, similar to what is described in Jeremiah 25:9 and Jeremiah 43:10.
Why would God summon the clans and kingdoms of the north to attack Jerusalem?
God would summon the clans and kingdoms of the north to attack Jerusalem as a form of judgment against Judah for their wickedness, as stated in Jeremiah 1:16, where God pronounces His judgments against them for forsaking Him to worship other gods, which is also mentioned in Deuteronomy 28:49-50 and Lamentations 1:5.
What is the significance of the kings setting up their thrones at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem?
The kings setting up their thrones at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem signifies their conquest and control over the city, as seen in Jeremiah 1:15, and is reminiscent of the prophecies in Isaiah 52:12 and Ezekiel 21:27, where the Lord declares His sovereignty over the nations.
How does this verse relate to the broader context of Jeremiah's prophecy?
Jeremiah 1:15 is part of Jeremiah's call to prophetic ministry, where God commissions him to proclaim His judgments against Judah, as stated in Jeremiah 1:17, and this verse specifically highlights the impending disaster from the north, which is a recurring theme throughout the book of Jeremiah, such as in Jeremiah 4:6 and Jeremiah 6:1.

- How can we, like Jeremiah, prepare ourselves to stand up for God's truth in the face of opposition, as commanded in Jeremiah 1:17?
- What are some modern-day 'idols' that we may be tempted to worship, and how can we, like the Israelites, be tempted to forsake God for other things, as mentioned in Jeremiah 1:16?
- In what ways can we, as the people of God, be a source of hope and comfort to those around us who may be experiencing difficult circumstances, as seen in the prophecies of Jeremiah?
