Isaiah 29:14
Isaiah 29:14 in Multiple Translations
Therefore I will again confound these people with wonder upon wonder. The wisdom of the wise will vanish, and the intelligence of the intelligent will be hidden. ”
Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
For this cause I will again do a strange thing among this people, a thing to be wondered at: and the wisdom of their wise men will come to nothing, and the sense of their guides will no longer be seen.
So once again I will surprise these people with miracle upon miracle. The wisdom of the wise will die, and the insight of the insightful will disappear.”
Therefore behold, I wil againe doe a marueilous worke in this people, euen a marueilous worke, and a wonder: for the wisdome of their wise men shall perish, and the vnderstanding of their prudent men shalbe hid.
Therefore, lo, I am adding to do wonderfully with this people, A wonder, and a marvel, And perished hath the wisdom of its wise ones, And the understanding of its intelligent ones hideth itself.'
therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men will perish, and the understanding of their prudent men will be hidden.”
Therefore behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even an astonishing work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
Therefore behold I will proceed to cause an admiration in this people, by a great and wonderful miracle: for wisdom shall perish from their wise men, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
Therefore, again I will do something to amaze these people; I will perform many miracles. And I will show that the people who tell others that they are wise are not really wise, and I will show that the people who tell others that they are intelligent are not really intelligent.

Context — Woe to David’s City
14Therefore I will again confound these people with wonder upon wonder. The wisdom of the wise will vanish, and the intelligence of the intelligent will be hidden. ”
15Woe to those who dig deep to hide their plans from the LORD. In darkness they do their works and say, “Who sees us, and who will know?” 16You have turned things upside down, as if the potter were regarded as clay. Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “He did not make me”? Can the pottery say of the potter, “He has no understanding”?Cross References

Isaiah 29:14 Summary
[This verse means that God will surprise and confuse people who think they are smart and wise, but are not following Him. He will show them that their plans and ideas are not as great as they think they are, similar to what is described in Job 38:4-7, where God's wisdom and power are beyond human comprehension. This is because God wants us to trust and depend on Him, rather than just ourselves, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-7. By doing so, we can experience His wisdom and guidance in our lives, and have a deeper, more authentic relationship with Him.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean for the wisdom of the wise to vanish in Isaiah 29:14?
This means that God will render useless the plans and ideas of those who think they are wise in their own eyes, similar to what is described in Isaiah 5:21 and 1 Corinthians 1:20, where human wisdom is shown to be foolishness compared to God's wisdom.
Is this verse saying that God is against intelligence and wisdom?
No, this verse is saying that God is against the pride and self-reliance that often accompanies human wisdom, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-7, where we are called to trust in God rather than our own understanding.
How does this verse relate to the previous verse, Isaiah 29:13?
Isaiah 29:14 is a consequence of the people's superficial worship described in Isaiah 29:13, where they honor God with their lips but their hearts are far from Him, similar to what Jesus teaches in Matthew 15:8-9.
What is the 'wonder upon wonder' that God will use to confound the people?
The 'wonder upon wonder' refers to the unexpected and surprising ways God will intervene in the lives of His people, as seen in Isaiah 55:8-9, where God's ways are higher than our ways, and in Psalm 40:5, where God's wonders are beyond our understanding.
