Ezra 2:36 Summary

Ezra 2:36 talks about a group of priests who were descendants of Jedaiah, and there were 973 of them who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel. This verse shows us that God is concerned with the details of His people's lives, just like He was with the Israelites in the wilderness, as seen in Numbers 1:1-4. The fact that these priests were counted and listed specifically emphasizes the importance of their role in the worship and restoration of Israel, as also seen in Deuteronomy 33:10. This reminds us that our own roles and responsibilities, whether in our families, churches, or communities, are important to God and part of His larger plan, as seen in Romans 12:4-8.

Ellicott's Commentary on Ezra 2:36

(36) The priests: the children of Jedaiah.—The priests are then given by family names, their numbers being very large in proportion to each of the other classes. Three only of David’s priestly courses are represented (1 Chronicles 24:7-8; 1 Chronicles 24:14); Pashur, a name mentioned elsewhere as the name of a priestly race, not being among the twenty-four in the Chronicles. Of the house of Jeshua.—A peculiar expression, seeming to indicate merely that the present high priest belonged to the race of Jedaiah, who, in that case, is not the same as the head of the second order in the Chronicles, unless indeed he sprang from the high-priestly family of Eleazar.
