Adam Clarke Bible Commentary
Comfort one another with these words - Strange saying! comfort a man with the information that he is going to appear before the judgment-seat of God! Who can feel comfort from these words? That man alone with whose spirit the Spirit of God bears witness that his sins are blotted out, and the thoughts of whose heart are purified by the inspiration of Gods Holy Spirit, so that he can perfectly love him, and worthily magnify his name. Reader, thou art not in a safe state unless it be thus with thee, or thou art hungering and thirsting after righteousness. If so, thou shalt be filled; for it is impossible that thou shouldst be taken away in thy sins, while mourning after the salvation of God. They that seek shall find.

Wherefore comfort one another with these words. Or doctrines; as that the saints, when they die, do not cease to be, but are asleep, and asleep in Jesus; that their souls are with him, and their bodies sleep in his arms, and are his care; that these will be as soon with Christ, as the saints that will be alive when he comes; that the coming of Christ will be with great power and glory; that the righteous will rise first in the morning of the resurrection, and before the living saints are changed, and are with Christ; that they will both be taken up together to meet him; and that they shall all be with him, and that for ever, and never part more; than which nothing can yield more true and solid comfort, under all the trials and troubles of this life, under all diseases and distempers of body, under all afflictions and persecutions for Christ's sake, under the loss of near and dear relations, and in a view of death and eternity: some copies read, "with these words of the spirit"; and so the Arabic version, "with these spiritual words": for such they are, being the word of God, as in Th1 4:15. Next: 1 Thessalonians Chapter 5

4:18 The purpose of Paul’s teaching about the end is so believers will encourage each other in the face of death. He is not promoting speculation about the end times.
1 Thessalonians 4:18
The Return of the Lord
17After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.18Therefore encourage one another with these words.

The Importance of Friendship
By David Hocking1.3K49:39PRO 18:1ECC 4:8ROM 12:101TH 4:181TH 5:11HEB 10:25In this sermon, the speaker shares a personal story about his son getting stuck in an irrigation ditch and needing help to get out. From this experience, he emphasizes the importance of having a friend who can support and pick us up when we fall. The speaker relates this to the need for friendship and support in all aspects of life, not just physical falls. He also highlights the strength that comes from having a friend, as two can withstand challenges better than one. The sermon references Ecclesiastes 4, which emphasizes the value of companionship and the strength that comes from unity.
Sin Is Shut Out—and They Are Shut In!
By C.H. Spurgeon0Comfort in SufferingEternal JoyPSA 16:11ISA 65:19MAT 5:12JHN 14:1ROM 8:181CO 2:92CO 5:1PHP 3:201TH 4:18REV 21:4C.H. Spurgeon emphasizes the eternal joy and peace found in heaven, where all causes of grief are eliminated, and the glorified no longer weep. In this perfect state, believers are sanctified, free from sin, and secure in their eternal home, where they experience complete fulfillment and satisfaction. The sermon highlights the contrast between earthly sorrow and heavenly bliss, assuring that the faithful will dwell in a place of everlasting joy and security. Spurgeon encourages believers to find comfort in the promise of eternal life, where every desire is met and every tear is wiped away.
God the Son: His Coming for His Saints
By Lewis Sperry Chafer0ISA 46:10JHN 14:31CO 15:511TH 4:161TH 4:18Lewis Sperry Chafer preaches on the importance of understanding unfulfilled prophecy in the Bible, emphasizing that prophecy is God's pre-written history and has been fulfilled in the most literal ways, such as the birth and death of Christ. He distinguishes between the events of Christ coming for His saints and His return to earth with His saints, highlighting the need for careful consideration of each. The doctrine of Christ's return is a major theme in the Bible, with the next event to be fulfilled being Christ coming for His saints, a mystery revealed in the New Testament.
Christ All in All
By Thomas Watson0ROM 5:31CO 2:22CO 5:21EPH 1:6PHP 3:8PHP 4:13COL 3:111TH 4:18Thomas Watson preaches about the incomparable greatness and sufficiency of Christ, emphasizing that Jesus Christ is all in all. He highlights the futility of relying on external religious privileges or worldly possessions for salvation, stressing that true salvation and acceptance with God come only through faith in Christ. Watson explains that Christ is all in all by way of eminency and derivation, being the source of all spiritual blessings and the quintessence of all good things. He urges believers to make Christ the center of their understanding, affections, abilities, aims, trust, and joy, emphasizing the importance of seeking assurance of their relationship with Christ and finding comfort in the all-sufficiency of Jesus.
