So Saul passed through the hill country of Ephraim and then through the land of Shalishah, but did not find the donkeys. He and the servant went through the region of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then they went through the land of Benjamin, and still they did not find them.

Saul Chosen as King

³One day the donkeys of Saul’s father Kish wandered off, and Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants and go look for the donkeys.”⁴So Saul passed through the hill country of Ephraim and then through the land of Shalishah, but did not find the donkeys. He and the servant went through the region of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then they went through the land of Benjamin, and still they did not find them.

Summary

In this verse, we see the beginning of Saul's journey to becoming the first king of Israel. Saul's father instructs him to search for some lost donkeys, setting the stage for a series of events that will ultimately lead to Saul meeting the prophet Samuel. This encounter will change the course of Saul's life and the history of Israel, as Samuel will anoint Saul as king. This seemingly mundane task of finding donkeys will serve as the catalyst for Saul's divine appointment as king, highlighting God's sovereignty and His ability to work through ordinary circumstances to fulfill His purposes.

he passed through mount Ephraim--This being situated on the north of Benjamin, indicates the direction of Saul's journey. The district explored means the whole of the mountainous region, with its valleys and defiles, which belonged to Ephraim. Turning apparently southwards--probably through the verdant hills between Shiloh and the vales of Jordan (Shalisha and Shalim)--he approached again the borders of Benjamin, scoured the land of Zuph, and was proposing to return, when his servant recollected that they were in the immediate neighborhood of the man of God, who would give them counsel.
