1 Chronicles 1:32 Summary

This verse tells us about the sons of Keturah, who was Abraham's concubine. It lists their names and some of their descendants, showing how Abraham's family grew and expanded after Sarah's death (as seen in Genesis 25:1-4). The fact that Keturah's sons are included in this genealogy reminds us that God values all people and all families, regardless of their background or circumstances (as seen in Galatians 3:28). By studying this verse, we can learn more about the importance of family and heritage in the biblical narrative, and how it applies to our own lives today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who was Keturah and what was her relationship to Abraham?

Keturah was Abraham's concubine, as stated in 1 Chronicles 1:32, and is also mentioned in Genesis 25:1-4, where we learn that Abraham married her after Sarah's death.

What does it mean that Keturah's sons were born to her as Abraham's concubine?

In biblical times, a concubine was a woman who lived with a man and had children with him, but was not necessarily his wife, as seen in Genesis 25:6, where Abraham gives gifts to the sons of his concubines and sends them away.

Why are the descendants of Jokshan and Midian listed in this verse?

The descendants of Jokshan and Midian are listed because they are part of Abraham's family lineage, and their descendants would go on to play significant roles in Israel's history, as seen in Genesis 37:25-36, where Midianite traders are mentioned.

How does this verse fit into the larger narrative of 1 Chronicles?

This verse is part of the genealogical record in 1 Chronicles 1, which sets the stage for the rest of the book by establishing the family lines of key figures in Israel's history, including Abraham and his descendants, as mentioned in 1 Chronicles 1:1-4.

Reflection Questions

  1. What can we learn about God's plan for families and lineage from this verse?
  2. How does the fact that Keturah was a concubine, rather than a wife, affect our understanding of her relationship with Abraham and her place in the biblical narrative?
  3. What role do you think the descendants of Jokshan and Midian played in the history of Israel, and what can we learn from their stories?
  4. How does this verse remind us of the importance of family and heritage in our own lives, and what are some ways we can honor our own family lines?

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on 1 Chronicles 1:32

Now the sons of Keturah, Abraham's concubine: she bare Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah. And the sons of Jokshan; Sheba, and Dedan. Sons of Keturah.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 1:32

(32) The sons of Keturah.—An extract from Genesis 25:1-4. Medan is very likely a mere repetition of Midian, due to a mistake of some ancient copyist. Genesis 25:3 adds, “And the sons of Dedan were Asshuriin, and Letushim, and Leummim;” which is, perhaps, an interpolation, as the three names are of a different form from the others in the section; and the chronicler would hardly have omitted them had he found them in his text. Midian.—The most important of these tribes. The Midianites dwelt, or rather wandered, in the peninsula of Sinai. Sheba, and Dedan.—See 1 Chronicles 1:9, where these names appear as sons of Cush. The names may have been common to different tribes settled in different regions. Sheba (Assyr. Saba’â’a) Massa, Tema, and Adbeel, are described by Tiglath-pileser as lying “on the border of the sunset lands”

Adam Clarke's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 1:32

Verse 32. Keturah, Abraham's concubine] Abraham's pilegesh, or wife of the second rank; she was neither whore, harlot, nor concubine, in our sense of these words.

Barnes' Notes on 1 Chronicles 1:32

Keturah, Abraham’s concubine - This passage, and Genesis 25:6, sufficiently prove that the position of Keturah was not that of the full wife, but of the “secondary” or “concubine wife” Judges 19:1 so common among Orientals.
