1 The second [again, another] lot [allotted portion, pebble used for decision] came out [was drawn, fell to] for the clans [families, tribes] of the tribe [large family group] of Simeon [Shimeon, the second son of Jacob]: Their inheritance [property passed down, family heirloom] lay [was situated, existed] within [in the midst of, surrounded by] the territory [land, region] of Judah [the tribe descended from Judah, the son of Jacob] word study 2 and included Beersheba [the well of the sevenfold oath] (or Sheba), Moladah [a town of birth or race], word study 3 Hazar-shual [jackal village, a town in southern Judah], Balah [become old, waxed old], Ezem [a city in the territory of Judah], word study 4 Eltolad [God’s generations], Bethul [man of God, God destroys], Hormah [devotion, a place of consecration], word study 5 Ziklag [a town in southern Judah], Beth-marcaboth [house of the chariots], Hazar-susah [horse village, a city in southern Judah], word study 6 Beth-lebaoth [house of lionesses, a place of fierce animals], and Sharuhen [refuge of grace]—thirteen [three and ten] cities [towns with walls or watchmen], along with their villages [small settlements, courts]. word study 7 Ain [a place of spring], Rimmon [a city in Zebulun], Ether [a town in the lowlands], and Ashan [a city in ancient Palestine]—four [a quantity of] cities [towns with walls, settlements], along with their villages [small settlements, courts], word study 8 and all [every single one] the villages [small settlements, unwalled towns] surrounding [encompassing, encircling] these cities [towns, communities] as far as [until, up to] Baalath-beer [mistress of the well] (Ramah of the Negev).
