BSA1 Then Job [the patriarch famous for his patience] replied [answered and said, responded]: word study 2 “If only [I wish, would that] my grief [vexation, deep sorrow] could be weighed [measured, assessed] and placed [laid, set] with my calamity [ruin, disaster] on the scales [balance, a pair of scales used for weighing] [together, in unity]. word study 3 For [at that time] then it would outweigh [be heavier than, exceed] the sand [fine particles, dust] of the seas [large bodies of water, the ocean]— no wonder [it is no surprise, therefore] my words [speech, utterances] have been [spoken, uttered] rash [without thinking, wildly, uncontrolled]. word study 4 For the arrows [sharp objects shot from a bow] of the Almighty [Shadday, the all-powerful One] have pierced me; my spirit [the breath of life, the mind and emotions] drinks in their poison [intense anger or rage, chaos]; the terrors [fears, alarms] of God [Eloah, the one true God] are arrayed [set in order, lined up] against me. word study 5 Does a wild donkey [a strong and fierce onager] bray [cry out loudly, like a donkey in hunger or need] over fresh grass [new growth, the beauty of nature], or an ox [cattle, like bulls or oxen] low [make a loud, mournful sound] over its fodder [mixed feed, food for animals]? word study 6 Is tasteless [insipid, without savor] food eaten without [in the absence of] salt [seasoning], or is there flavor [taste, perception] in the white [clear liquid, spittle] of an egg? word study 7 My soul [living being, the essence of a person] refuses [to say no, reject] to touch [reach, come into contact with] them; they [those things, specifically them] are [like, considered as] loathsome [sickening, detestable] food [nourishment, sustenance] to me [as my sorrowful meat, my diseased provision]. word study 8 If only [I wish, oh that] my request [petition, what I long for] were granted [given, fulfilled] and God [Eloah, the one true deity] would fulfill [give, grant] my hope [expectancy, what I wait for, cord of attachment]: word study 9 that God [Eloah, the one true God] would be willing [to undertake, to agree] to crush [bruise, utterly destroy] me, to unleash [let loose, set free] His hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share] and cut me off [stop, bring to an end, destroy]! word study 10 It still [continues to this moment] brings me comfort [solace, consolation], and joy [exultation, rejoicing] through unrelenting [intense, severe] pain [agony, sorrow], that I have not [never] denied [concealed, hidden] the words [sayings, commands] of the Holy [set apart, sacred] One [God, the Divine]. word study 11 What [in what way, to what extent] strength [power, ability] do I have, that I should still [continue to, persist in] hope [wait, trust, have expectation]? What [kind of, what manner of] is my future [end, outcome], that I should be [remain, continue to be] patient [wait, endure, prolong my life]? word study 12 Is my strength [power, might, ability] like that of [as strong as, comparable to] stone [rock, a hard and unyielding substance], or my flesh [body, physical being] made of [composed of, resembling] bronze [brass, a hard and coppery metal]? word study 13 Is there any [no, none, or not any] help [assistance, aid, or support] within me now that success [prosperity, wisdom, or chance of success] is driven [banished, expelled, or ripped away] from me [away from my presence, or out of my life]? word study 14 A despairing [ready to faint, deeply troubled] man should have the kindness [mercy, pity, loving actions] of his friend [neighbor, companion], even if he forsakes [abandons, loosens] the fear [reverence, respect] of the Almighty [Shadday, all-powerful God]. word study 15 But my brothers [close relatives, friends] are as faithless [deceitful, untrustworthy] as wadis [dry riverbeds, seasonal streams], as seasonal streams [channels of brooks, rushing waters] that overflow [pass away, vanish], word study 16 darkened [become blackish, black] because of the ice [frost, rock crystal] and the inflow [overflow, flooding] of melting [hiding, concealed] snow [white snow], word study 17 but ceasing [drying up, coming to an end] in the dry season [time of drought, heat] and vanishing [being consumed, extinguished] from their channels [places, locations] in the heat [intense warmth, burning]. word study 18 Caravans [camel-trains, traveling companies] turn aside [to twist, turn away] from their routes [paths, ways]; they go into the wasteland [desolate place, emptiness] and perish [be destroyed, lost]. word study 19 The caravans [travelers, companies] of Tema [a desert region, son of Ishmael] look [to regard carefully, consider] for water [a source of life, refreshment]; the travelers [passengers, men in caravans] of Sheba [a region in southern Arabia, a tribe] hope [wait patiently, expect] to find [discover, come upon] it [this essential resource, a necessity]. word study 20 They are confounded [put to shame, distressed] because they had hoped [trusted, been confident]; their arrival [coming, approach] brings disappointment [ashamed, found nothing]. word study 21 For [because of this situation] now [at this moment, in this time] you are [have become, exist as] of no help [nothing, without assistance]; you see [look upon, gaze at] terror [a state of fear, my casting down], and you are afraid [filled with fear, in awe of]. word study 22 Have I ever said [Did I say, command or utter], ‘Give me something [Bring unto me, offer to me]; offer me a bribe [a reward, a gift] from your wealth [your substance, possessions]; word study 23 deliver me [from the adversary’s power] from the hand [of strength or direction] of the enemy [or oppressor]; redeem me [to pay a price to set free, ransom] from the grasp [or power] of the ruthless’? word study 24 Teach me [show me, explain to me], and I [myself, personally] will be silent [hold my tongue, keep quiet]. Help me [cause me to understand, make me see] understand how I have erred [gone astray, wandered morally]. word study 25 How [forcible, powerful] painful [sickening, irritating] are honest [upright, righteous] words [sayings, speech]! But what [how] does your argument [reproof, rebuke] prove [reprove, correct]? word study 26 Do you intend [plan, devise] to correct [reprove, rebuke] my words [speeches, sayings], and treat [regard, consider] as wind [a blast of air] my cry [speech, utterance] of despair [hopelessness, desperation, one that is desperate]? word study 27 You would even [ruthlessly, without pity] cast lots [gamble, chance the fate of] for an [fatherless child, orphaned one] orphan and [exploit, take unfair advantage of] barter away [sell out, sacrifice] your [close companion, neighbor] friend. word study 28 But now [at this present time, in this moment], please look [be willing to gaze, turn your eyes] at me. Would I lie [deceive, speak falsely] to your face [presence, before you]? word study 29 Reconsider [turn back, change your mind]; do not be unjust [guilty of moral evil, unrighteous]. Reconsider [return to a right mindset], for my righteousness [my right standing with God, justice] is at stake [in question, being evaluated]. word study 30 Is there [in existence, present] iniquity [moral evil, wrongdoing] on my tongue [the instrument of speech, language]? Can my mouth [the organ of taste, palate] not discern [understand, distinguish] malice [desirable but harmful things, perverse intentions]? word study
