15 Bible Verses on Repeating Sin

15 verses

Scripture warns that deliberately continuing in sin after receiving knowledge of the truth can lead to severe consequences. The book of Hebrews cautions that willfully sinning after receiving spiritual enlightenment can result in a fearful expectation of judgment, as described in Hebrews 10:26-27. The apostle Paul acknowledges the struggle with sin in Romans 7:15, while 2 Peter 2:20-22 notes that those who return to sin after escaping its corruption are worse off than before. Ultimately, believers are called to overcome sin through the power of God, as encouraged in Romans 6:12 and 2 Peter 1:4-11, which emphasize the importance of spiritual growth and perseverance.

If we deliberately go on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins remains, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume all adversaries.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do.
If indeed they have escaped the corruption of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, only to be entangled and overcome by it again, their final condition is worse than it was at first. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than to have known it and then to turn away from the holy commandment passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud.”
Through these He has given us His precious and magnificent promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, now that you have escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities and continue to grow in them, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever lacks these traits is nearsighted to the point of blindness, having forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure. For if you practice these things you will never stumble, and you will receive a lavish reception into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires.
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who submit to or perform homosexual acts,
Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!’
For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? Certainly not!
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
“I am the true vine, and My Father is the keeper of the vineyard. He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, and every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes to make it even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers. Such branches are gathered up, thrown into the fire, and burned.
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, consider this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
Then Jesus declared, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and then looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
