13 Bible Verses on Hatred

13 verses

The Bible teaches that hatred has no place in the heart of a believer, as it is contrary to God's nature of love. In 1 John, we are reminded that loving God and hating others are mutually exclusive, and that true love for God is demonstrated by love for one another, as seen in 1 John 4:20 and 1 John 2:9. Proverbs 10:12 notes that love covers all offenses, while Jesus instructs His followers to love their enemies in Matthew 5:44 and warns against unforgiveness in Matthew 6:15. By embracing love and forgiveness, believers can overcome hatred and reflect God's character.

If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.
Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers all transgressions.
If anyone claims to be in the light but hates his brother, he is still in the darkness.
But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yours.
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.
A hateful man disguises himself with his speech, but he lays up deceit in his heart. When he speaks graciously, do not believe him, for seven abominations fill his heart. Though his hatred is concealed by deception, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness. He does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.
Do not say, “I will avenge this evil!” Wait on the LORD, and He will save you.
You must not harbor hatred against your brother in your heart. Directly rebuke your neighbor, so that you will not incur guilt on account of him.
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice.
