18 Bible Verses on Grief

18 verses

In times of sorrow, the Bible offers comfort and solace, acknowledging the pain of grief while pointing to the hope of healing and redemption. Jesus' teachings in Matthew 5:4 and other passages affirm that God is near to those who mourn, offering them blessing and comfort. The Psalms, such as Psalms 147:3 and 34:18, express the depths of human sorrow while also proclaiming God's tender care for the brokenhearted. Ultimately, Revelation 21:4 promises a future where God will wipe away every tear, and 1 Peter 5:7 encourages believers to cast their cares upon Him, trusting in His loving provision.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
I consider that our present sufferings are not comparable to the glory that will be revealed in us.
To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to break down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones together, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to count as lost, a time to keep and a time to discard, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. What does the worker gain from his toil? I have seen the burden that God has laid upon the sons of men to occupy them. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and do good while they live, and also that every man should eat and drink and find satisfaction in all his labor—this is the gift of God. I know that everything God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it or taken from it. God does it so that they should fear Him. What exists has already been, and what will be has already been, for God will call to account what has passed. Furthermore, I saw under the sun that in the place of judgment there is wickedness, and in the place of righteousness there is wickedness. I said in my heart, “God will judge the righteous and the wicked, since there is a time for every activity and every deed.”
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.
Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope.
I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!”
You have taken account of my wanderings. Put my tears in Your bottle— are they not in Your book?
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
